I think it was very IC for Tony (also considering what's going on with him right now--he's having problems with his company, fighting his friends, and his best friend is dead. It pretty much can't get worse for him, emotionally). And he's always been the kind to have his heart on the sleeve.
Now, I agree her response was definitely warranted (he did make her think he died and came back with a love confession, like, no). I really liked this whole scene, because both of them felt real in their reactions. I even like the way she snapped about Rhodey--it hurt, and but it was an emotional, not thought out response and she realised it immediately, but it was also the one thing Tony wouldn't take.
It was a very painful, raw scene, but it was fitting, for where they both are in their lives.
I also miss Marquez a lot. I used to like Deodato, but he got way worse :(
