[community profile] cap_ironman Community Check-in Results Summary

Thank you to our 80 Cap-IM Community Check-in respondents!

It's so wonderful to hear things like "I love this community" and "thanks for all the hard work that you do". Thank you! We think that you are all amazing, too, and we hope that more of you find the [community profile] cap_ironman community welcoming as we implement changes we have planned for 2021 and act on some of your feedback ❤

With such a wide range of Stony fans, it's no surprise that we received suggestions that counter each other. For example, someone said they'd like more memes, while someone else confessed that our promo posts don't work with their blog's aesthetic so they don't reblog them.

C'est la vie!

Below, you can find a non-identifying summary of how people voted and what that means for the cap-ironman community going forward.

We asked which platform is most used to keep up with cap-ironman announcements and events:

which platform is most used to keep up with cap-ironman announcements and events? Tumblr: 46, Discord: 20, DW: 7, Twitter: 7, LJ: 1

Which is about as we expected, given that Dreamwidth is our primary platform for archiving and hosting information whereas Tumblr is our primary platform for advertising events. When we asked whether you'd like us to use a specific platform more, most of you were pleased with the status quo — only a handful of people requested that we be more active on either Twitter, Discord or Tumblr.

Your ratings for the "on a scale of 1-5" statements were vastly positive, which is gratifying. Notably, our weakest point is the ease with which fans who aren't content creators can get involved with the cap-ironman community. We've taken that to heart and are brainstorming how we can make current opportunities for non-creators more visible, and how we can further engage everyone in the community.

70 out of 71 people preferred our current annual event schedule, so that's staying! We received a heap of event suggestions, and would like to address a couple of things here:
  • Our events calendar is pretty darn full already! Your mods do their best to fit smaller events in between the annual ones, and we love your enthusiasm in wanting to participate more.

  • Remember that if you'd like to help us out, you can apply to be an event mod. You can also host mini-events through the cap-ironman platforms — get in touch with cap.im.mods@gmail.com if you'd like our support with that, or just go for it!

  • There are so many other Stony and Marvel and multifandom events out there! For example, we don't really want to step on toes by running a stocking event when there are already well-established ones that we can promo instead. Similarly, Marvel Trumps Hate has successfully run for the last 3 years; we feel that signal boosting this charity auction is better than splitting the focus.

    • We promote other Stony-related events that we know of in our monthly Newsletter and Fanwork Round-up posts. You don't need a Dreamwidth account to view those, and we crosspost the link on all our platforms.

    • To promote your Stony-related event, you can post on our Dreamwidth or Discord, or get in touch via email or Tumblr IM with a link for the mods to reblog. We'll also feature it in the Cap-IM newsletter!

Eligible Worktypes

When it came to including fanmixes with cover art and manips/gifs as eligible worktypes for our events, we got a mixed bag of responses:

should manips and gifs be eligible worktypes for the RBB, BB and HE? BB: 36 for no, 24 for yes, RBB: 29 for no, 30 for yes, HE: 26 for no, 33 for yes.

should fanmixes (with cover art) be eligible worktypes for the RBB, BB and HE? BB: 41 for no, 25 for yes, RBB: 34 for no, 31 for yes, HE: 32 for no, 33 for yes.

We found it interesting that some people who were okay with including gifs and manips as work types didn't think that fanmixes should be eligible for cap-im challenges, given that a fanmix with cover art means an artwork or digital manipulation such as a moodboard plus music.

For the curious, the cap-ironman mods asked about the inclusion of fanmixes in a 2015 poll (click here to expand!)
In 2015, cap-ironman mods only asked about the Reverse Bang and Big Bang. The opposition to fanmixes was a lot stronger for the RBB than the BB, which is opposite to the 2021 survey.

2015 survey results for should fanmixes (with cover art) be eligible worktypes for the BB? No: 20, yes: 12

2015 survey results for should fanmixes (with cover art) be eligible worktypes for the RBB? No: 25, yes: 6

We deliberated and have decided to make manips, gifs and fanmixes (with cover art) opt-ins for all three events. We are taking this stance as we would like to include our talented fandom folk who may not feel as welcome in our events, but also make sure that participants receive the gift or collaborate with a work type that they are happy with.

  • Manips, gifs and fanmixes will be added as eligible art forms for the Reverse Bang from 2022 onwards, with writers and podficcers "opting in" to collaborate with those works by claiming them.

  • The 2021 Big Bang will allow them as eligible work types for artists claiming a fic summary, with writers opting in to be claimed by someone intending to create any of the aforementioned work types the draft submission email.

  • The cap-ironman Holiday Exchange event, which is undergoing some significant changes, will be reformatted to include work-type opt-ins as part of the signup form.

Most people voted that yes, podfics should be included as an accompanying fanwork type for writers to opt into in the Big Bang:

should podfic be an eligible worktype to opt into in the Big Bang? Yes: 54, no: 15

Which means that we will also be going ahead with that plan for the 2021 Big Bang. Our current minimum requirements for draft submissions (20K words and ~80% finished) will stay in place for writers who aren't opting in for podfic, while writers who would like to opt in will need to provide a finished story.

Podficcers, keep your ears pricked for the midyear BB announcement with the updated rules!

Artists will also be pleased to know that the Big Bang requirements for you will be staying the same, as the majority voted to keep the current one artwork plus banner minimum.

what should the minimum artwork requirement be for the Big Bang? One art plus one banner: 57, two artworks plus one banner: 15

Bingo!

Opinions on the schedule for bingo rounds were clear:

how many bingo rounds should there be per year? 1 round: 21, 2 rounds: 38, 3 rounds: 7

And when it came to crossposting bingo fills to other bingos, we got an overwhelming yes please!

should cap-im bingo fills be able to be crossposted as fills for other bingos? Yes: 59, no:10

This means that we will be keeping our current bingo schedule, with a new round starting every 6 months for both STONY Bingo! and Comment Bingo.

From the upcoming bingo round (which starts on February 1st!) onwards, you will be able to count STONY Bingo! fills towards other bingos and events which allow crossposting (i.e. we still request that HE, Remix, RBB and BB entries not be counted towards bingo fills because these are collaborations or gifts, but if another event allows crossposting fills, go for it!)

If you'd like to respond to anything in this post, you can do so by commenting below (no accounts needed), getting in touch, or filling out our anonymous feedback form which is open year-round.

Thank you for this update. I, for one, am happy to hear that crossposting will now be allowed for the STONY Bingo. Yay!
