Happy birthday crims fic - from me this time and late!

Author: Axolotl_lan
Rating: PG-13 (I know I'm a little scared too- hold me ^_~ )
Prompt: Matchmaking, Cuddling
Summary: Steve thinks Tony needs a good girlfriend.

Tony had been moping around the mansion for weeks. Steve was concerned for his friend what if this led to Tony drinking again? He couldn't risk it and the answer was so simple really. Tony needed a girlfriend.

Obviously, he couldn't go dragging out the man's little blackberry ,since all of his previous relationships were woefully inadequate.
Tony deserved the kind of woman who could be as strong as a rock on a wild shore. Beautiful, intelligent, powerful- Tony needed a woman who could love and understand both him and Iron Man.

Steve held his sketchbook in his lap and tried to consider possibilities.

He watched Tony fussing at the other side of the room and drew him,  lithe lines and stippling to show where the goatee had gotten a bit scruffy.  Smudged shadows under his eyes, and pouting lips.

he looked at the drawing and tried to visualize a good match. His mind went briefly to Jan and he had only gotten as far as a tiny Jan hovering by drawn Tony before he flipped the page over and began a new sketch of Tony. This time he drew Tony a bit firmer, her ignored Tony's current state as obviously a 'good' relationship would help fix some of that up.

He began drawing Wanda next to him curling locks and secretive smile. Then his hands were moving so quickly it was almost as if they were being guided by some kind of devilry and illustrated Wanda was being clutched protectively by Pietro and he found the page turned once more.

He started with Carol this time, she was strong and beautiful, she could understand many of Tony's plights but- his pencil tip snapped when he tried to draw Tony next to her. Taking it as a sing he flipped the page once more.
He accentuated the muscles on Tony's form and made him a slightly healthier weight, he drew a wide smile on Tony's face, one he'd remembered seeing Tony give to him after a battle with the Avengers.

He drew Tigra only to have illustrated Tony's eyes water and nose twitch upward as if about to sneeze.

She-hulk took up too much of the page for him to fit Tony onto it.

He drew Tony next to Sharon Carter but they just looked at each other oddly.

He drew Pepper, who immediately demanded Happy be drawn with her.

The next page was where things got strange, Thor. He had drawn Thor, strong, blond, he was a tempest but he could be tender.
Illustrated Tony held his helmet in the crook of his arm and didn't seem terribly upset at this turn of events.

He stared a bit longer before drawing one last picture, a frenzy of pencil on paper. He smudged it gliding his fingers across the image he produced.

He closed the sketchbook and went to phone Carol... to see if she wanted to go on a double date with him and if she could please find someone for Tony.

It was a cop-out of the worst sort, but maybe he would get lucky and she would find the right kind of woman for him.

" Tony, we've got to get dressed. The girls are going to be ready shortly." Steve said trying to remove Tony from his gadgets and get him up to his room.

" blind-dates are stupid. If I wanted to watch you and Carol coo at one another over a table I would've said so. I really don't get why you need me there." Tony muttered dangerously trying to remove his arms from Steve's grip and get back to working on his armor.

" Carol wouldn't have brought you a bad date and why are you being so mean-spirited about this?" Steve asked trying to hold the struggling Tony still and guide him toward the exit- no small feat.

" It's nothing just, drop it. I'll come, play moral support or whatever." Tony had stopped struggling and they were now progressing toward the rooms with little delay, but something in the tone of voice Tony had used gave Steve pause.

" Oh god. You like Carol! I'm.. I... I'm sorry Tony. I don't know how to make it up to you... or I know, we can go and then I will have a pressing engagement or umm Fury will call me and I will need to go and I can escort your date home and then you and Carol can be together. I really am sorry Tony, I feel like a heel. I should have considered your feelings. " he had his head ducked down and muttered a few more apologies of the same wrote to Tony.

" Steve, I don't- it's not what you, oh never mind. This is fine, we're fine, just let it go- okay?" Tony said watching Steve lift his head with a smile and nod before heading off to his own room to get changed.

Steve opened his sketchbook and looked at Carol free and lovely on the page and pulled out his pencil and chained her to a confused and upset looking Tony.

It was vindictive of him, but he didn't care and slammed the book shut and headed out to meet their companions in the hall.

He would hide his heart and let Tony be happy without him, with a woman who could understand him and keep him in line.

He didn't want to leave Carol waiting too long.

He didn't want to have to think about this any more than he had too.

He smiled across the table at Carol before addressing Hank... at first Tony had been absolutely gobsmacked at the choice of blind date but then he and 'Beast' had fallen into a sort of rhythm.

Steve tried to figure out what he was supposed to do now, technically he had requested Carol go on a date with him but it was to try and get Tony out of his funk. It was working Tony was talking up a storm with the good doctor and eating heartily. He just didn't know what he was supposed to do! Does he try to guide Hank and his large furred hands that seem to keep touching Tony away so he and Carol can be left alone or does he lead Carol away with him and leave the two men of science to share yet another common bond?

He heard a faint whisper over his ear, "Maybe, you ought to just wait this out, Cap." Carol's voice spoke softly.

He tried to be quiet he really did, he moved his fork in the mashed potatoes sculpting them into Iron Man.

" Hey Steve, pretty good, but you missed the ridge there."  Tony's hand fell over top of his own and guided his fork into adding a ridge along the hip of the armor.

That was before the hand stabbed viciously into the mashed potato armor and lifted a forkful hopefully to his mouth.

Their eyes met and by the time they separated Carol and Hank were nowhere to be seen, leaving them alone together- With the bill.

But it was a small price to pay for this.

"You seriously, didn't realize you had a crush on me?" Tony laughed incredulously flipping through Steve's sketchbook as they sat on the the bed. Steve's arm was laid across Tony's shoulders as Tony's head was up against his heart. In this position Tony was all but in his lap. It felt right. They hadn't gone much further than this, each having their own reasons.

" I just wanted you to be happy. It didn't have to be me, just someone as good if not better." Steve said primly.

"Steve, there is noone better than you." Tony kissed his cheek leaving Steve blushing brightly.

"Seriously though Steve... You in the Captain America costume standing on a rock ledge with crashing waves holding me in your arms like a damsel in distress with the armor standing next to you... If we follow this imagery what are you the waves?" Tony pointed to the picture.

Steve paused a moment, enough that Tony would almost think he hadn't separated himself from his heroic identity like he had Tony.

That was before Steve answered him, "I'm the rock- obviously"  and he was.

EEE! EEE! What, you want coherency? Don't write anything half this cute, then. =P Steve the artist is something that needs to be explored a heckuvalot more, and I like how you made him a visual thinker with the doodles and playing in the mashed potatoes and everything.

Best lines:
He watched Tony fussing at the other side of the room and drew him, lithe lines and stippling to show where the goatee had gotten a bit scruffy. Smudged shadows under his eyes, and pouting lips.
Steve's so far gone, it isn't funny.

I think they need to get to know some less... unusual ... women!

That was before Steve answered him, "I'm the rock- obviously" and he was.

EEEEE! Again.

(bonus points for the Maximoff-cest and Beast appearance!)

takin' a short essay break

Tony muttered dangerously trying to remove his arms from Steve's grip and get back to working on his armor.

Do you have any idea how adorable this looks in my head? Like a child trying to get back to his teddy bear.

He drew Tony next to Sharon Carter but they just looked at each other oddly.

This one's my favourite. Seriously, Cap, what the hell were you thinking?

I absolutely loved the idea of Steve thinking through his sketching/drawing, his fingers revealing his thoughts even to himself. It made me think of how I think through my fingers when I type, and something when I write something out that I've been pondering, it all just comes clear in front of my eyes even when I wasn't sure about it in my brain.

"You seriously, didn't realize you had a crush on me?" Tony laughed incredulously flipping through Steve's sketchbook as they sat on the the bed.

*grins* Steve can even be clueless enough to not figure out that maybe the endless sketches of Tony meant something! :-) :-)

And although I never would have pegged Beast as a good blind date for Tony, once you said it, I realized that it would totally work! Maybe not long term, but Hank could certainly be a mentally stimulating, fun, non-emotionally destructive companion.

Thanks so much for this! *smooches*

Not just come in good humour, but find the whole situation hysterically funny and make jokes about it for years afterwards. *g*

Steve and his sketchbook! ~~~SQUEEEE!!!~~~

Oh this made me too happy! And now i want to sketch all the little pictures out! :D

Him chaining Carol to Tony ^___________^

Steve molding his mashed potatoes into Iron Man! Oh-- I lol'd <3

And the whole Tony being separate from Iron Man and Steve being separate from Captain America (i know you get how much that means to me... I always like to play on that dynamic :D) Steve is the Rock-- for Tony... my brain thinks of Captain America being the rock for Steve too and that's causing weird imagery in my head :P

I loved this <3
