Reassurance

"Ok Tony, you sit this one out."
Steve followed Sam to the door, but as he crossed the threshold, he turned to look back. Tony remained hunched over, hands held helplessly out in front of him.
Steve's gaze lingered on his friend and sometimes lover. He glanced at Sam.

"I need a moment."

Sam nodded "Yeah. I'll be outside."

Steve walked back to Tony. If the other man noticed Steve's return, he gave no indication of it until Steve rested both hands on Tony's shoulders. Then, Tony moved. He stood, turning to face Steve, hand already raised in a dismissive gesture. Before he could say anything though, Steve pulled him into an embrace. He could feel Tony's warm breath against his cheek as the man gasped in surprise.
"Thank you,"
The wary man didn't move away, but he did snort. "For not helping you?"
"You did help."

Tony shrugged as best he could in Steve's arms, "I could help more if I put you before my company. What kind of friend –" Tony fell silent and looked away.
Steve shook his head. "You think I'd ask that of you, let alone expect it?"
He waited, for a response. He hoped for understanding, but expected more self recrimination. He got only continued silence as Tony looked at his own hands. The blonde gave his friend a few more moments, watching as Tony opened and closed his fist a few times, but still Tony refused to even look at Steve,
Fight the urge to shake his friend, Steve instead knelt and forced Tony to look down at him.
"You're doing the right thing."
Tony's eyes widened but Steve refused to give him a chance to deny what he told him. He grabbed his friend's shaking hands and pulled Tony to him.

Holding onto the man he'd known since the moment he woke from the ice, Steve found himself confessing what he couldn't to either Sharon or Sam.

"I may kill Bucky tonight."

It was only five words but Steve felt as though the weight of them might crush him.

He felt Tony put a hand on his shoulder and squeeze.

"That's why I should—"

"Be here," Steve finished gruffly. "I need you to be here, Tony."

"Steve—"

Steve placed his hand over the hand Tony still had on his shoulder. "I won't let this destroy the lives of two of my friends." Steve squeezed Tony's hand. "Bucky is enough."

"Steve—"

"I need you here. I need to know you'll be ok after all this. I need you to keep your life together more than I need Iron Man on this one trip. I can't have both you and Bucky on my conscience."

Steve felt some of the tension in Tony's body loosen and knew he'd made his point. He stood quickly then offered out his hand and easily pulled Tony to his feet.

Tony though sat back down, and immediately resumed interest in the floor. "I'll stay. I was going to anyway, but Steven—"

Steve gave Tony and odd look, caught off guard but the unusual use of his full name.

"— don't make me regret this."

Steve nodded, placing his hand on Tony's shoulder.

Neither man had anything more to say.

After a moment, Captain America turned toward the door. Half way there though, Tony's voice brought him to a halt.

"Steve," Captain America stopped and turned back to Tony, "Whatever it is that happens, what ever you have to do, you'll do the right thing. You have a knack for that."

Steve looked back and Tony one last time before he left the room. He felt confident for the first time since he'd found the classified documents on his table.
