Just speculating here, but considering the armour was at one point sentient (and ignoring the whole Ultron and the Sons of Yinsin storyline) could Tony have chosen that armour specifically because it has the proven ability to house a consciousness?
... and I don't want to say anymore in case I throwing out any more spoilers.
