Iron Man 2 (Entertainment Weekly)

This week's Entertainment Weekly cover features the Iron Man 2 cast.

First of all, a poll:

[Poll #1430810]

Second of all, what are your expectations for this film, as Iron Man fans, and as Steve/Tony shippers?

[identity profile] neptunedream.livejournal.com 2009-07-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not impressed. I hate Scarlett Johanssen, I'm not a huge fan of RDJ as Tones...blah. I know it's pretty much an entirely different Universe, and I can't say I didn't enjoy the first one at all...but yeah...I don't know. See my most recent post for wank-ish Marvel-related content.

I'm looking forward to Mickey Rourke, although (because?) he looks ten kinds of crazy.

ScarJo... I'm just not feeling her. I don't think she's a great actress (and that's putting it kindly) and I really don't think she's cut out for this role; she just looks too soft, too young. I hold out hope that she's not going to mangle the Black Widow, but we'll see.

Actually Tony doesn't wear the pants in any relationship...But that's okay, I still love him.

Your icon, from what Minimarvels is it?

[identity profile] tavella.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think that RDJ's Tony makes a pretty good movie-adaptation Tony. He's not precisely the actual comics-origin Tony (who stayed an arms manufacturer for some time and was mainly there to kick the ass of Commies), and he's definitely more innocent than the modern Tony.

But I think he's pretty close to what you might get if you extrapolated early-modern Tony backwards. Early-modern not the CW, post-CW "I am a futurist, I adore authoritarianism, do as I say because I know all" take, but the 80s to early 2000s take. Alcoholism preparing to bite him in the ass, fiercely driven to do good, easily lost in the delight of creation and often not thinking of the consequences... it's pretty believable. You can see getting from that character to the more world-weary and cynical one.

I'm a fan of Johansson. I think she's great. I don't tend to think of her when I think of ruthless Russian assassins (especially as she's very beautiful, and my personal canon on Natasha is that she's not a remarkably good-looking woman). I will, however, withhold judgement until I see it.

I am irritated that Rourke is in this, however, as I've been successfully avoiding him for some time now (He's pretty much the actor I enjoy least in the entire world ever). Snap.

I don't think there's going to be much Steve/Tony, but one can hope for more shield action?

I think ScarJo looks great with her Black Widow hair. Mickey Rourke looks...well, he threatened a dude who made fun of his dog, so I'll say he looks "great".

I am really, really excited for this film. I thought the first one was brilliant [I can go into nerdy tech stuff about it, if you want], and I loved RDJ as Tony. In fact, this was the first film in a very long time that I've liked Paltrow [that woman needs to emote more]. I don't think we'll get a lot of Steve/Tony [sadly], but maybe they'll have cast Cap by the time the film comes out.

I know! He threatened Joel McHale... Unforgiveable. LOL

[identity profile] morgulq.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Can I vote for Downey for the hair thing? I get the over stylization of ScarJos, I get Rourkes weird...greasy wool thing. The 80's white 'fro? Seriously, WTF? Entertainment Weekly needs to reign in their hair stylist!

In defense of RDJ's take on Tony, it would be impossible to stay true to fifty years' worth of canon, especially since canon itself is so fluid in comics. I think he and the rest of the production team, writers, ect did a good job of capturing the spirit of Iron Man. He's a spoiled, narcissistic man-whore who responds to a nasty wakeup call by taking things into his own hands (without regard for his personal safety, in true Tony fashion. :-) ).

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to give Tony's poof some leeway, since it could possibly be considered helmet hair. Other than that, I'm staying out of it, because I liked Rhodes in movie 1 and it biases me. :(

I love RDJ's Tony, but he was my introduction too, sooooo yeah lol... But I think he manages to translate a lot of narrator-given information into something that works on film, which is partly what works so well for me. I never, ever spent any time wondering about RDJ!Tony's motives or moods. 616 Tony is a lot harder to read, but we get the narrator to go over his torment, so it's all good.

IDK what I expect. As an IM fan, I want to see Tony crushed a little, as horrible as it sounds. D: It would help mature the character and show what kind of drive he does have. I also would really, really like to see some sort of indication that we're not going to ever ever ever ever ever ever see CW, but alas, I don't even think negative foreshadowing is possible. I wish we could have some identity porn. :(

Now, as a shipper... I want to see Tony confirmed as bisexual, even if it's just a flippant "ex-boyfriend" sort of remark. It would just edge them that little bit closer to canon, which would be wonderful. Some sign of Tony's inner Cap Fanboy would be good too. Maybe a mention of Cap's history, or a collection of newspaper cut-outs... Just little tiny glimpses would make my year.

(sighs of longing go here)

Any confirmation about Olivia Munn's role, yet? Because I've been hearing she's a likely Jan, and I'm all "NOOOOOOOOOOOO" about it. I'd like to know whether I should continue to freak or be relieved.

[identity profile] dieewigenacht.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Holly Mother of God! Please don't let THAT happen.

[identity profile] cosmicbiscuit.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I would cry, I'm not gonna lie about it. I mean, I'm kind of iffy about the possibility of Jan being Ultimates!Jan anyway, because prior commentary on the Avengers lineup indicates Hank's likely not going to be anywhere near his Ultimates self, but even if Jan does end up being Ultimates!Jan... Olivia Munn? Seriously? Do not want.

Oh man, that would rock so hard if they made movie!Tony bisexual in the actual text of the movie. Not only woluld it make me happy as a Steve/Tony shipper, but it would go some length to crushing the claims I've heard from fanboys that super heroes are straight, and if I want a gay super hero I should just stick to Young Avengers and be happy.

I'd love to see more of Tony's inner Cap Fanboy, too. I'm going to join in your sighs of longing, if you don't mind.

Well Scarlett doesn't look as bad as I was worried she would.

[identity profile] ija-ijewna.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear. This poster made me delurk and that says something.
Erm. Who in their right mind casts Scarlett Johansson as Widow? Sure, I understand that she's a boys magnet, that she'll attract so called mainstream to cinemas, but... But she's way too young and way too Western in her looks. There's not even a bit of stereotypical Russian in her. I'd much prefer Cate Blanchett in this role - she'd be fabulous.
As for Rourke (his tame octopuss acting as hair aside) I'll wait and see. He's a brilliant actor and I'm quite curious what he's going to do.

It's the one where Spider-Man is unmasked, leading to the magisterial headline: SPIDER-MAN REMASKS - We don't know who he is again.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering how well the first movie did, I wouldn't think they need to worry about attracting the mainstream. As long as they have Iron Man and things go BOOM in the trailer, people will see it. Which makes the casting even more o.รด inducing to me.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I have Sooper Sekrit reasons for wanting bisexual movie!Tony lol. I think it would be very progressive even outside the super hero genre, because I can't think of any male bisexual movie characters. (headdesk) We get 100% straight and we get 100% gay. Except if they're girls, because bisexual girls sell to the male audience or some BS like that. x.x /old rant

Plus it would slide very nicely into RDJ's Tony, I think. :D

What makes me hopeful for the inner fanboy is that they have Cap on the table while IM2 is filming, so it would be easy to have some in-jokes and cross-referencing without sacrificing anything. Plz oh plz, Marvel?

[identity profile] helva2260.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't know what my expectations are... I'm a bit weirded out by Mickey Rourke's dreadlocks and the plotline that he's trying to be TonyStark-lite. I like the idea of Scarlett Johanssen - she's a good actress (though I've never actually been interested in any of the films she's been in!) - but she projects innocence somehow. In all the shots we've had of her in costume as Natasha Romanov, I can't help thinking that she looks like a little kid playing dress-up in big sister's clothes!

I'm also trying to be optimistic in hoping that the plotline sticks a little bit closer to the canon Justin Hammer storyline than it currently sounds, and that the end will tie in to the Avengers movie.

...P.S. Did you hear they cast Thor (and his love interest)? And Kenneth Branagh's directing it? Though I'm a little worried by the rumour that Brian Blessed might be voicing Odin... O_O

[identity profile] helva2260.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Have just looked Olivia Munn up, and the only reason I can see for casting her as Jan would be if they were planning to do the Ultron Tony gender-bender plot!

Wouldn't it work out better if they switched her and Scarlett Johanssen around? OM's got the worldly seductive spy thing going for her, and SJ could really do Jan's early years, when she was the (slightly spoilt) naive society girl who thought it would be cool to combine fashion-designing with superhero fame.

[identity profile] perrypadfoot.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What I don't understand is why they don't get an actual Russian actress! Like that girl from Zoolander who worked for Migatu? She was in this other movie, (I forget the name), where she was dead-on Nat- short red hair, skin-tight leather, badass attitude. It was awesome.

[identity profile] posyvanilla.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Milla Jovovich! You know, I hadn't thought of her as Natasha, but she would have been perfect.

Also, I am slightly ashamed that I knew who you were talking about from the Zoolander reference. :)

[identity profile] perrypadfoot.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! That's her. I always imagined her voice in my head whenever I read Nat dialogue. I can totally see her doing all the stunts herself because her body is so in-shape and gorgeous. I'm kind of in love with her.

Why? Zoolander was bitchin'! Okay, I can see why, but still- "All he had to do was turn left."

oh my god RDJ's FACE. It looks like his new armour's groin guard is just a little tight
