Invincible Iron Man #21 recap and discussion post

Sorry this is a couple days tardy. You know how the holidays sneak up on you and punch you in the teeth then run away giggling? Yeah totally happened to me...

Well here you go, usual requests. And all that.

I'm ACTUALLY interested, and not just because Steve is back. I'm wondering how exactly the reunion will go, considering how unusually willing everyone seems to be (or maybe that's on the surface...?), and that fact that Tony is basically going to be reset to pre-Extremis era Tony... I highly doubt that will be enough to redeem him, considering everyone else will know what he is capable of... I wonder if he left a note for himself, just in case he does come back? THAT I would like to see.

I imagine that Steve won't hold it against Tony... maybe... I recall the "we should have talked earlier" conversation. Well, it's earlier for Tony! Maybe they can have that talk NOW and see where it gets them?

I feel HORRIBLE for Pepper. A part of me wanted her to refuse forking over her repulsor unit. Talk about suck! It's just not FAIR all the crap she goes through. She's right, she's always there to help and give, and because of that she lives more for Tony than herself. That just SUCKS. But in the end she still helps... That woman goes through too much... but doesn't everyone in the Marvel universe?

About Tony backing himself up - he'd already done that once before Extremis, remember the Hypervelocity arc?

I'm getting kinda impatient with Fraction's pacing. WMW stretched what should've been a 6-8 issue arc over 12 issues, stuffing in lots of filler while glossing over things that really could've used more exploration. Now this arc's had two issues already, and the plot's moved forward about half an inch. With a bit of judicious editing, these two issues could've been squeezed into one and still had a couple of extra pages left over for a more in-depth exploration of Steve's reaction to being back and seeing Tony like this, and everyone else's reaction to having Steve back. Get moving, Fraction!

OTOH, I'm feeling all smug because I was right about Maria's disk containing a Tony backup. Though if they do end up with a rebooted Tony who doesn't remember the Civil War, I hope that doesn't stay permanent. It seems like a bit of a too-easy out, allowing Tony to avoid taking responsibility for what he's done. Not that there's not a lot of potential for great moral and ethical complexity in the story of a man trying to take responsibility for wrongs he doesn't remember committing, but I don't really trust Marvel to give it to us. :-P

Hmm... So, Tony no longer has the Extremis powers, but he still has some of the physical enhancements. I wonder what else of his body he altered, besides his lungs.

In terms of tone, voice, etc. I wanted to show him an example of an online amateur comic blogger who's doing it with style. :)'
