Happy holidays, [livejournal.com profile] valtyr!

Title: Sensory Perception
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hallidae
Fandom: Marvel
Pairing: Steve/Tony
Rating: PG13
Genre: Fluff, Vignette
Universe: Sort of a fusion of 616 and MA

Prompt: Steve has peak human abilities, which includes his senses - he's very tactile, and loves to be touched and petted. Something with Tony touching him a lot and Steve loving it.

Author's Note: Wouldn't have expected a harmless bit of fluff to need two rewrites, but we all get our surprises on occasion.

He wasn't sure exactly when he'd started noticing it. There had been some scattered incidents, sure  -like the way Steve had momentarily leaned into Jan's hand when she'd jokingly ruffled his hair and informed the man he was getting shaggy during some meeting or another, or the brief expression that would sometimes cross his face when someone cheerily clapped him on the shoulder- but he couldn't remember when he'd realized that there was a pattern to it, or a very interesting reason for it.

He did remember exactly when he'd started encouraging it, though.

They'd spent the New Year's before last chasing down escaped experiments from -yet another- alien lab that had crash landed near the Savage Lands. On top of that, Steve had spent nearly a week prior alternating between political meetings, international crises, and unwanted publicity spots for the government. He couldn't really blame the man for finally collapsing from sleep deprivation once the last giant squiggly monster thing had been caged up and shunted off into one of the little dimensional pocket things Pym had come up with the month before.

Of course, Steve collapsing on him the second they'd reboarded the Quinjet hadn't exactly been expected, and the temptation had been just far enough over the line of his self-control that he hadn't been able to resist. He'd ended up spending the rest of the trip home absently petting the sleeping man's hair, and resolutely ignoring the knowing smirk that crossed Jan's face when she happened to glance over just in time to see Steve snuggle closer in his sleep.

After that, it had just been a sort of... game that he felt compelled to continue playing. A subtle touch here, a pat on the back there, a handshake that lingered a little too long, or an affectionate caress when he thought that Steve was sleeping and wouldn't notice.

Only Steve had noticed, about three months into the game, sparking a very long talk that had been the surprisingly pleasant and unexplosive catalyst to bring them to this point in time.

Speaking of time, he noted in his head as he glanced over at the clock beside the bed, he probably should be making himself get ready for work soon.  But a shift of the bed beside him quickly derailed that thought, and he couldn't help a small smile as he squirmed to better accommodate the shape of Steve's new sleeping position.  Work could wait for a bit, he decided, moving a hand to lightly dig fingertips into that spot just below the base of the other man's skull. That earned a faint squirm and a puff of warm breath against the reactor in his chest that made him involuntarily shiver as his partner roused a little.

"Mnnh," Steve mumbled sleepily. the faint rumble of a contented purr undercutting any grouching in his voice. "Not fair."

"But it's still one of your favorite ways to wake up," Tony teased faintly, unable to keep from sounding the tiniest bit smug as he brought his other hand up to begin working at a small tension knot between his partner's shoulder blades.

"True enough," came the muttered reply, and he made a small snort. Someone was clearly still mostly asleep, since Steve rarely admitted such things with so little embarrassment. There was a gratifying little groan as the knot finished loosening up under his fingers, and he moved to sit up so he could more easily find any others.  Maybe it was a bit of an odd thing to find so appealing, given his relationship track record, but he got a lot of enjoyment out of these mornings as well. Nothing to prove, no fights to be had, nothing to rush about  -yet.  Just a very comfortable bed and equally comfortable contact with a partner that he, for the moment at least, didn't feel the need to impress. Not that he would have needed to do much to impress right now anyway, he added with some humor, enjoying the way Steve relaxed under his hands.

"Any other spots I should be looking for?" he asked, fingers grazing along Steve's spine.

"Mm, anywhere's good."

He tsked. "Don't say things like that," he replied, purposely dropping a little bit of a leer into his tone. "You do that and we'll end up never getting out of this bed today without intervention from a certain irate redhead."

That got a snort of amusement that was muffled by the pillow, and he hummed faintly, working his way back up towards Steve's neck and taking advantage of the moment to thread his fingers into short blond hair. "Like that?" he asked mildly when a gentle scratch earned a faint moan.

"God, yes."

All joking aside, he really could have spent the morning like this, so he was rather disappointed when the clock beside the bed began to beep. "You set an alarm?" he asked, maybe just an eensy bit petulant at having their pleasant moment interrupted.

"That training meeting with the new SHIELD agents, remember?" Steve said as he rolled onto his back, also looking fairly unhappy about the alarm as he reached over to shut it off.

"Oh. Damn, I was sort of hoping it had been cancelled."

"Not a chance."
He shifted to let Steve get up, and slid out of bed after him. "We're still on for lunch, though, right?" he asked, and the tall blond gave him a grin.

"I'm all yours after noon."

"Okay, now you're just pulling that shit to be annoying," he grouched, leaning up to bite the man's lower lip, and the fact that the grin didn't go away did nothing to dispel his suspicions. He'd intended on stealing the shower first, just as a sort of petty revenge, but an arm sliding around his waist effectively kept him from sneaking past. "Yes, dear?" he asked wryly as his partner nuzzled his neck.

"Mm, don't mind me. Just stealing a last few seconds before I have to get ready to go play symbol."

"Aww, but you like playing symbol," he teased, before reaching up to pet sleep ruffled hair again. Honestly, though, he couldn't say that he minded this. It was just another one of those little moments that he'd started finding oddly appealing, lately.

Not that he'd say it out loud, of course. Not yet. But a faint hum against his neck was a good clue that he was becoming quite proficient at getting the point across with his fingertips instead anyway.
