Volume 1: The Irresponsible Avengers
So I finally read the first issues of the Avengers, and wow, they were really DOING IT WRONG b4 Steve showed up and took charge. Everyone was socially retarded, except for Jan, but nooobody listened to her because she's the girl, and it's a Fact that the act of gushing about a cute guy actually empty out your brain cause multitasking does not exist.
Issues #1 or How Do I Shoot Bystanders?; Ant Man was giving out the orders, and they were baaaaad decisions. First off...why did they chose to confront The Hulk in the middle of the circus show...and to get his attention by attacking him? Even if the Hulk was guilty, he wasn't hurting anyone while he was performing the show...why provoke him when they were surrounded by civilians? What was Ant Man thinking when he made a net at the top of the tent, when he should know it won't trap Hulk, he'll just bring the net, and the whole tent with him?
Then when not-yet-Avengers were on the train track, Hulk hurled a train car and hurled it at the Not!Avengers, who dealt with it by blasting it to pieces, the text mention that the train car was empty, but um, from the angle of the Avengers...they really couldn't safely tell that.
Issues #3: After the tricks of the Space Phantom brought out the angry namecalling from everyone towards Hulk and Hulk quit...instead of feeling At Least an ounce of shame and being apologetic when they were trying to bring the Hulk back, everyone was like, "We can't let the Hulk rampage through the country", when um, it seem like the Hulk was living a quiet life of dignity, which was why they couldn't find him at first. Then when they did, no apology over the misunderstanding. Before they found the Hulk, Iron Man, using some hologram projection thing, asked everybody's help...first he just popped into The Thing when Ben was about to leave for his date, as in, no warning, here's my image and my eyes IN YOUR ROOM. Then Iron Man couldn't wait to ask Reed to help him with an Not Immediate problem when Reed was in the middle of an experiment with fire. Then Iron Man talked at Spiderman when Spidey (who doesn't have an armour, btw), was dealing with multiple thugs with guns.
Maybe I could credit the Stan Lee for making Tony intentionally insensitively, at the end of him hologram trolling Almost Everyone, and found nothing, Tony said something along the lines of, Oh well, at least I got to test my new feature. I remember when I first read John Byne's run on the Fantastic Four, there was an introduction describing the FF as a family, while The Avengers were more like bozos that love to get together to kick arse and party. I disagreed with it then, because in the Avengers stories I have read at the time, The Avengers were like a family, Tony's family, and Wanda's too, and Pietro as she had reminded him. Well, reading the beginning? They were bozos. Thor needed to be reminded by Tony that causing an explosion inside the cave would harm Jan. While Thor is awesome, he just doesn't have the human sense...
Hank repeatedly insulted Jan...and Jan is awesome. She doesn't rebuke the way she's underestimated, in fact, I think she plays up the ditz, she certainly rubbed in when it seem like Hank was jealous over her comments about Thor. The best thing is that Stan Lee writes her thinking to herself as well as speaking to other people. Even though Jan wasn't leading yet, she's already taking initiative...shrinking down to snap the Space Phantom's wires in #2 and stopping the fight between Captain America and the other Avengers in #4. Note the little things that took up little of the panel but is there; such as Jan being able to find the oxygen thingie that Hank needed very fast in the cave after Iron Man's been immoblized,
Many of the panels in the first volume was totally asking for Rule 34, the way the troll grabbed at Thor...and that most fight scenes involved actual grappling...and then there was the scene were Rick Jones approached Steve while dressed up like Bucky. That scene I first saw at
scans_daily, the "he's taking the full blast of my ... ray...what a man!", apparently the he in question is Steve, um...
Something seem off. I remember seeing scans of When They First Met, where Tony underestimated Cap at first and told him not to fight yet, but Steve leap into it, and also the one where Tony leaves a note with Cap's shield. I thought this happened within the first few issues, but no. Cap was accepted right away and he fought alongside them right away.
