Intro chapter from a newbie
Hey *waves*. I'm a pretty much lifelong comic fangirl, who hadn't been able to really keep up with any series the past couple of years (why, hobbies? Why must you cost money? and /growing up sucks rant). I missed (and, *ulp*, still haven't read) Civil War, was never particularly a huge fan of the Avengers or of Captain America... and then I saw something with these two, and it just hit me hard, and I've been obsessed with the pairing since (and developed a new serious love for Cap as well as Tony). So I found and joined the comm, and now I bring you swell folks the intro chapter to the longish fic I've been working on. (whew! long introduction is long!)
Title: You Were Made For Me (Intro Chapter)
Author: GlasgowSmiles
Rating: PG-13
Warning/Spoilers: Character deaths (in alternate universe). Alternate universes.
Pairing: Steve/Tony and pre-Steve/Tony
Word Count: 1,169
A/N: I enjoy alternate universes, and seeing them meet. Also, I tend to keep my chapters short, and I try to post them regularly as I can, so if you're a fan of bite-sized bits of fic, read on, and if you prefer getting the whole story at once, then wait until it's finished and I'll have links to previous chapters.
Summary: A warning arrives of a potential threat from an alternate universe, and Tony Stark reaches new levels in self-loathing.
"All right, what is so important that I get called away from work on a day when nothing is demolishing the city?" Tony Stark groused, sweeping through the hallway of the Avengers' mansion until he reached the assembled group.
"Well..." Steve and Clint both stepped to the side, revealing a man who looked... very much like Tony Stark.
"Ah-huh." Tony blinked. "I can see why you'd want me to come down here."
"I assume we can talk?" The other Tony stood, shaking off a restraining hand on his arm and stepping forward. "I promise you-- or, me-- that I am you. Us. From an alternate universe."
"We called Reed as well, he's coming down to verify the whole alternate universe story."
"Brilliant." The second Tony said, looking less than pleased. "I'd be happy to show the schematics to anyone who'd understand them." He looked to Tony again. "Do you have a whiteboard? A napkin and a crayon? Anything?"
Steve handed over a sketchpad and a soft pencil, and the other Tony began sketching diagrams as if his life depended on it-- which, Tony rationalized, wasn't far from the truth. Not his life, maybe, but his freedom certainly depended on his proving he was an alternate Tony Stark and not some impostor.
When he'd finished, Tony let out a low whistle. "This is good."
"Figured at least you'd say so."
Reed Richards arrived to dispel all doubt, pointing out a few lines as his own.
"I never finished it," He sighed. "But yes, theoretically that's it."
"No. On my side, none of us could get it on our own. That's yours, this bit is Hank's, and of course this is mine."
"All right, then what is it you thought we all needed to know?"
"Now that you believe me," The other Tony gave a little shrug and dusted himself off a little bit. "We built three. We told Peter to destroy the prototype, the hub device, and all the data we'd compiled. Hank, Reed, and I each took one, each skipped to a different universe, knowing we could never make it back. Also knowing that even if we did, it would likely be to an Earth that had completely fallen. The rest of the Avengers, and the X-Men, all I know is they are, or were, holding the threat off for as long as possible."
"I made a leap to an alternate universe as well?" Reed asked, brow furrowing.
The other Tony frowned and looked away. "After Sue and Johnny... Yes. You volunteered. We all did."
Reed nodded, turned, and left.
"It was an invasion. We didn't know what to call them-- they didn't seem to have a name for themselves. But they came in huge waves, they just destroyed whatever was before them. And what they wanted was a way to do the same not just to other planets, but to other universes. They had some technology, nothing like what we had, but given the time, and given what they could take from worlds they conquered... we wanted to give at least some parallel universes a warning. What we knew about their weaknesses, their strengths... If we had been able to turn them away sooner, before so many waves arrived, before they got a toehold, before they killed-- I don't know if they exist in your universe, or if they'll come from another one. But you've got a better chance than we had now. I hope it's enough, if it ever has to be."
The others dispersed, slowly after he finished, but Tony stayed, watched his alternate self watching the Avengers return to whatever they had been doing before his arrival. Watched him watch Steve in particular, a keener version of the haunted look he wore mentioning Sue and Johnny...
"Cap, too?" He murmured, low enough that the man in question wouldn't hear him. No one liked to hear about how they had died in an alternate universe.
"And Jan. It's why we volunteered. That and we had been the ones to build the thing, but I know I would have sent someone else in my place, if..."
Tony blinked, tried to order his thoughts, blinked again, and said "I'm sorry? I mean, when you said Sue was killed, I got why Reed would be willing to go. And if Jan died too, that covers Hank, but--"
"But what?"
"Well, we're not..."
"You're not married?"
Tony noticed the ring on his double's hand for the first time. "No. No, I'm not. I didn't realize you-- Who was she?"
"... She?"
There was a long pause.
"She." Tony repeated, though with somewhat less conviction. The other Tony's eyes kept straying sadly across the room to where Steve was sketching something. "Oh. He. Him?"
"Frankly, I'm surprised to hear you aren't."
"I'm not gay." He insisted, fighting off the niggling voice in the back of his head, the one he used to shut up with a stiff drink. "And even if I was, I couldn't get married. I mean, if I was, I couldn't-- In your universe, it's legal?"
"What is this, the dark ages?" The other Tony scoffed, looking disgusted. "Of course it's legal! Hell, man, what else is wrong with your universe? Are there laws against miscegenation, too?"
"There's nothing wrong with my universe, things here are fine! Make that crack about miscegenation again and Luke Cage will probably punch us both in the face, and-- You can't be married, not to him, not to-- Because I'm not--"
"Oh, lovely. Don't we have enough crap to work through without being a self-loathing homosexual on top of it all? If I had to be ashamed of myself for loving a man, I probably never would have crawled out of that bottle..."
"I'm not a self-loathing homosexual! You can't... you can't be in love with him, he's-- we're friends, just friends, this is wrong, I--"
Anything else he might have managed to sputter out on the topic he didn't get around to, because the other Tony Stark's fist connected with his right eye mid-sentence.
"Don't you ever trivialize my marriage again, you miserable bastard."
He picked himself up and was about to swing back when a hand wrapped around his wrist.
"What's going on over here?" Steve asked. "I mean, I always wondered if your massive ego wasn't just covering up for some deep self-loathing, but this is a little..."
"My apologies." The other Tony was blushing. Blushing, damn him. "I-- I don't know what came over me."
"Yeah, I don't know what came over me, either." Tony growled.
"Watch it." His double snapped. "I'm not about to take that kind of crap from anybody, not even you. I don't mind being stranded far from my home universe, there's nothing for me to go back to, but don't make me start to feel your world's not worth saving."
He stalked off, and Steve dropped Tony's wrist.
"What happened there?"
"Don't ask." Tony shook his head. "Please, just... don't ask.

Anyway, love this scenario! I'm honestly more excited to find out how Steve's going to take all of this than the Tony's squabling(Tony's purpose, reguardless of universe,is to endure lots of pain, hardship and angst). Afterall not!gay Tony and Steve are from the same universe so in theory other Tony has to get the gay is good point through both of their thick skulls. On that note I wish OtherTony the best of luck.(He's going to need it I imagine)
((And if anyone knows where I can find the above mentioned comic, please message me a link? It's one of the many things that went missing when I transfered to a new laptop a few weeks ago))
