Steve is sort of the closest thing we've got to a reliable narrator - except for Jan - but at the same time, there are certain things he's just so endearingly oblivious about.
The fact that the Avengers pay for any damage they cause, and that they draw a salary, was built in to the 'verse pretty much right from the start is one of the things I really like. It sort of grounds them, in the midst of all of the wackiness inherent in superhero homics.
