I SAW THAT. idk idk, it looks very...dark. I mean, obviously the war is going to be dark, but the appeal of Cap is his hope despite that, yes? He looks kind of the opposite of hopeful on there...

I'm not really sure what direction they're taking with the movie at this point.

Well, it's got a big "AVENGE" written across his chest, and it seems to be raining ashes, so I guess they're bearing towards grim & gritty, warp factor 10.

OTOH, I really do like the way they muted the colors of the costume, and made it look less like something a circus performer would wear. It still doesn't look like anything an American soldier would wear, though.

I KEEP HOPING THAT THEY'RE JUST DOING THAT TO LURE IN NON-FANS. I mean, some of the stills look a little better? except for the ones with Bucky what have you dooone

I have mixed feelings about the costume, but I do mostly like it. I greatly appreciate that they added the wings. XD It just gives the costume that dorky edge.

I'm pretty okay with grim in my WWII, you know? And I suspect they're trying to go for different moods with each of the hoped-for big franchises.

I don't mind grim (I mean, it's WWII), but my favorite thing about Cap is that he manages to keep some hope and faith in people despite witnessing one of the worst wars in history. I'm just hoping that they try to keep that, too. :( It's hard to tell at this point.

I think they will. The stills have him smiling, and Chris Evans has a lot of charm, and the interviews have talked about how Cap's supposed to be inspiring and a really nice guy - I think they'll have tried to keep that in.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping, too. I don't exactly trust Marvel that much on the movie front, but surely they wouldn't change Cap that much? Right now I'm mostly hoping that it's just a marketing thing. Gritty war movies reel in non-fans, iykwim.

I think you can have a gritty war movie but still have Cap an inspiring figure who doesn't lose faith; there have been some quite dark Cap comics, after all.

That's sort of what I mean. Honestly, "gritty war movie" in the US usually means that everyone dies and it's about how horrible people are down deep. The reason I don't watch many war movies and yet love Cap is that he's not naive--he knows exactly what people are capable of doing to each other--but there's still that thread of hope, yeah? You don't usually see real faith in other people in that many war movies. Sometimes WE WILL SURVIVE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY but not really...hopeful. (For obvious reasons.)

I'm having trouble phrasing this.

Oh, I definitely don't think it's going to be about how horrible people are. There's got to be hope in the Cap movie, and I think there will be. :)

I am really liking the Serious Face here. Dunno, for me it kind of plays off the bright imagery of the shield and the costume- it balances out "superhero movie" with "World War II, serious business". So yes, there's going to be ass-kicking and the shield and bright colors, but they way this is presented makes it seem like they're not going to ignore the challenges of that era. He looks like he's deep in thought, or contemplating loss, and I think that's not a bad way to approach fiction set in this era. There's respect there.
As an aside, every day my love for Chris Evans grows. He's just such a good fit for this role. /dreamy sigh
