Cap_Ironman Weekly News, Week Ending 6 February December 2011

Well, there's a Cap poster, and an article at Empire, and it all looks terribly impressive. Rumour has it today's Superbowl will have a Captain America spot. (I think that means there'll be an ad on during the footie.) Who is excited? I am excited. Way too excited to wait almost five months. Also, Maria Hill might be in the Avengers!

Over in the Ultimate universe, it's all gone comprehensively batshit; I'm still reeling from giant vampires stabbing each other with planes, but there are some previews here. Cap wears an adorably dorky parka, Cap wears a flag as a toga, Tony Stark hangs out with Spider-Man.

The cover for Fear Itself #1 is out here. Thor, Iron Man and Steve are prominent, although Steve looks like Reed Richards with a dye job.

The Ultimates are going to be fighting Mr. T? Awesome. And by "awesome," I mean "dumb." Also, what's with Cap's pants? Skin tight on one leg, loose and flowing on the other.

You can't just say something like that and not link to scans!

That is some grade A nonsensical crack. I like Fury, Ult!Hawkeye and (Ult!Maria Hill?)'s row of WTF faces in the last link.

Also, why are the vampires flying through the air like Peter Pan?

I have never been so excited about super bowl in my life.

Erm... which should not be taken in any way to mean that I"m going to watch it.

YAY SUPER BOWL. I enjoy the football at any time, but I am going to enjoy this broadcast even more. There will be squee. Oh yes.

I am rooting for the Green Bay Packers, and here is why:
1. I live in Baltimore; Pittsburgh is our mortal enemy (why, I don't know), so I will support any team that is in the position of being able to grind the Steelers' dreams to dust beneath their feet. Plus if Pittsburgh wins they will be insufferable, oh man.
2. Packers fans wear large cheese-shaped foam hats on their heads when rooting for their team. I approve of this.

Anyhow, game is supposed to start up at 6:30 PM EST, which is...11:30 London time? I'm not sure when the commercial will come on but you could stay up through halftime to watch for it.

Oh definitely, I'm sure the trailer will be on the Interwebs within minutes of its airing.

The foam cheeseheads are a little unusual. People like to wear their team's colors, of course, and you see a lot of team jerseys and facepaint at games. Usually there are a few fans at every game that really get dressed up and have fun with it. My team (the Washington Redskins, and yes, that name should have been changed thirty years ago) has the Hogettes, which is a bunch of grown men who dress in ladies' clothing and pig snouts and cheer on the team (and they do a lot of charity work too). You see, back in the 80s our defensive line was nicknamed the Hogs, and...this is sounding much less logical as I go on.

[personal profile] elspethdixon 2011-02-06 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the "Hogs" thing was maybe some kind of play on footballs being "pigskins" and the team being the 'Skins? I couldn't swear to it, though, because even though I grew up in the DC area in the 80s, my family were always more into ACC basketball.

[personal profile] truthiness_aura 2011-02-06 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure that played into the names. Honestly I'm not sure if anyone really knows how it got started, I just know the Skins had that crazy defensive line for most of the 80s and early 90s, and they were definitely called the Hogs (maybe because they were all enormous guys, too). After he retired, George Starke, who played left tackle, opened a place in Bethesda called "The Head Hog BBQ" that my family used to go to. Boy, was that good. Great jalapeno corn muffins.

[personal profile] elspethdixon 2011-02-06 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The cheesehead thing is kind of unique in its weirdness. People usually stick to painting their faces and sometimes their entire torso in team colors and waving those giant styrofoam "#1" hands.

And sometimes DC football fans wear fake Native American war bonnets and do a fake "Indian war whoop," which is pretty much exactly what you'd expect when your local team is called the Redskins. I think Wisconsin got the better deal, and just because the Packers are usually a more successful team.

[personal profile] truthiness_aura 2011-02-06 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The Packers are the only community-owned team in the NFL, too, which is awesome and I wish occurred more frequently.

Personally, I would love to see Washington change their name to the Greenskins. That way we could be orcs! You could keep a lot of the warrior imagery too. (This may be mostly because I would love to see an orcish warrior ride out on a warg and start whipping up the crowd with his axe.)

[personal profile] elspethdixon 2011-02-06 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It starts at 6:30 EST, so, about half an hour from now. I wish I knew the timestamp for when the Cap and Thor commercials were going to be on, so I'd know to exactly when the only three minutes of footage I care about was going to air.

For most of the people I know in NYC, the game's pretty much just an excuse to party - last weekend was the game everyone really cared about, where the NY Jets got knocked out of the running for the super bowl.

IT'S IS THIS: Marvel Super Heroes: What The--?! Captain America vs. Iron Man: The Big Game!

That would all be capslock, but I totally just c/p'd it because it's so looong.

...yeah, that was pretty much my reaction. It was just like...I have no idea what I just watched, but I'm pretty sure I'm laughing.

Did they really just have Tony and Steve start fighting again over the Superbowl? Is Steve really wearing a cheese hat? Are they starting the battle again over a Dorito?

Yeah, I guess so.

If Maria Hill makes it into the Avengers movie, there's a strong possibility that I will fall over dead from squee.

And it will be totally worth it.

News flash: Cap trailer is nifty!

[personal profile] cursor_mundi 2011-02-07 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
The Cap trailer looked awesome! Though Thor made me go "meh," which is worrisome. BUT BUT BUT, Fox claims all the advertisements will be available on their web site whenever the game ends, and I bet they'll hit the rest of the internet approximately 30 seconds later.

Eeeee, Steve right out of the super-soldier tube! *swoons*

Mindblown. At least before I saw the scans, then it was just "impressed"
