In MCU news, Don Cheadle has been given the poster treatment for IM3. Emily VanCamp has landed the female lead (presumably Sharon Carter) in CA2. And Chris Pratt has been confirmed as Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy.

What's that, you're not up on GotG? Well, you're not alone, and Marvel knows it. Without name recognition or lead-in movies to lure a potential audience, they're resorting to blatant marketing tactics: throw Tony Stark at the franchise and hope something sticks.

"Throw Tony Stark at the franchise and hope something sticks." XD I love that line, especially since it's so completely true from what I read in that article. Though, Tony Stark (and by extension Robert) isn't the end-all-be-all of the Marvel superhero franchise, even if his extremely successful movie in 2008 was what got the ball rolling. There's only so many times you can "throw Tony Stark" at something before it stops looking good, although I do love Robert's Tony.
But considering how successful Marvel has been lately with their movies, maybe it will be a good thing? TBH, I'd only heard of this movie once before, and then promptly forgot about it until it was brought up here. I'm just wondering why Marvel is making a major movie on a franchise practically no one has heard of. They would do better to do something with Mark Ruffalo's Hulk (in my opinion anyway).

GotG is gonna be a tough sell. They're trying very, very hard to make the team appeal to a new audience, and right now it feels a bit too much like infomercial-esque hype. (But wait, there's more! If you order within the next five minutes, we'll throw in Iron Man free of charge. This special "Tony Stark learns about the space clap" edition** won't be available for long, so act now!)

Maybe Marvel actually will deliver something worth the old I liked it before it was cool (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/01/31/bendis-says-buy-guardians-of-the-galay-for-bragging-rights/) line. Updating the style and costumes and roster could just as easily backfire with the cult following Guardians does have, though. They're running the risk of hearing, I liked it back when it was still good.


**Iron Man #6, I AM DISAPPOINT.

What was wrong with Iron Man #6? (I don't read the comics.)

I got into Iron Man because of The Avengers, since I was curious about the background. Now, I haven't read the comics, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the amazing history behind 616!Tony. I just have trouble keeping up with the many branches of the comic book universe, and I am very picky about the style of art I look at.
But that line "I liked it before it was cool" has some issues. Would you stop liking Harry Potter just because it's a global phenomenon? Or The Hunger Games (if that's your taste of reading material)? I suppose my point is that people should enjoy things because they like it, not because the rest of the world has suddenly decided it's tots awesome. And that they shouldn't just stop liking it to be contrary; because if you can do that, then you didn't really like it to begin with.

I, personally, will forever be a fan of Danny Phantom.

If you're picky about art, you don't want to be reading IM right now. (Although I gather Greg Land (http://fuck-no-greg-land.tumblr.com/) won't be doing the upcoming backstory arc, yay!) IM #6 was particularly cringeworthy because I think he's confused "a new and supposedly fascinating alien species" with "Las Vegas showgirls in pastel body paint". And Tony was all, Hey, I know we just met, and I'm not even sure we're anatomically compatible, but I can't wait to get out of my armor so we can share all those exotic space germs against which my body has zero natural immunity.

I was under the impression that they were doing GotG purely because they wanted to use the villain from that franchise.

I think it's also that Bendis really likes the characters -- he went on and on about how Quill's origin is as good as Peter Parker's, riiight -- and wants to pull them out of B-list obscurity. Which means throwing them in the thick of all the current stuff. He's also said that he's treating GotG as the space Avengers (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=41610). (Well, the actual word used was "cosmic", which is shorthand for the genre, and is a somewhat loaded term given that some fans are allergic to it and some creators refuse to go near it.)

I think Rocket Racoon has the potential to either be an amazing character on film - or a JarJar Binks. So I keep rooting for the former and dreading the latter. Time will only tell, I guess.
