General Fanfiction Question

Hi,

I hope it's OK if I post this here. If not, mods, feel free to remove it.
I'm moving to China in a couple of months and I'm just looking for information about the laws regarding reading and posting fic. Anyone familiar with my work will know I write graphic slash and some dark fic. I also frequent the kinkmemes. Just looking for any help anyone can give me.

I live in Northern China and I have no problem posting or reading ANY kind of fic. I usually write slash and genderswap and some darkfic and it's never been a problem for me and I live here nine months out of the year.

Blogspot and Wordpress are blocked. Tumblr, AO3 and LJ are perfectly okay to read and post. If you are very paranoid and want to have access to twitter, FB and youtube, invest in a good VPN.Astrill so far hasn't been blocked yet, so look into that.

What part of China are you going to? I moved here last year for work and it's been pretty good. I've had no problem getting on livejournal. And Tumblr works fine. Dreamwidth too. I know some of the other blogging sites don't work but if you get a proxy server or vpn you should be able to access blocked sites. I use one for facebook and twitter. good luck with your move!

Also living in China. XD But yeah, most of the fic sites I frequent aren't blocked, though there are some inexpensive VPN's out there if you want to be sure. I know a lot of people who use Astrill, but I use PandaPow. From what research I've done they say it's the best for China and it's one of the cheapest. Also, they've got very good reviews for customer service. But I can access most things without it. It's mostly wordpress, and the big social media networking sites that are blocked, not fanfic.

The VPN will also work for your anonymity, if that's what you're worried about. It makes it look like you're accessing the net from where ever you have it set to (in my case, L.A). VPN's make browsing a lot safer in wifi hotspots in general, so you don't have to be quite so paranoid that the Chinese government is looking over your shoulder at everything. Do you know what part of China you're going to?

You could try Tor network. It's really easy to use, and free. It downloads to a stand alone folder, and has all it's components included. Uses a firefox style interface. Here's the link: https://www.torproject.org/ I think that should provide what you need, though I would be careful anywhere your screen could be monitored by cameras.

As someone who has been living in China for four years, I can tell you that your reading and writing of fic/kinkmemes will be fine. China is th land of fakery and bootlegs and piracy. No one is going to notice or care if you post some fanfic.

But do invest in a good VPN, lest you find some of your favorite sites blocked.
