Gillen is leaving Iron Man

I think that's important news to this comm.

So. Gillen ends his current arc and leaves Iron Man (as he wrote on his tumblr).

Any feelings? Tears of joy? Surprised "finally"? Also, how do you think, when will we know who's the next writer? Any wishes and hopes who it could be?

You know, enough units sold that, there are people who liked his iron man run.

I'm torn between feeling happy and anxious. Happy because I hated his run even more than I hated Fraction's run, and maybe now things will get better. Anxious because "maybe now things will get better" is what I thought after Fraction left, and look what happened.

Going to throw out some names here for people I'd like to take over:

My top pick to take over would be Al Ewing. Fatal Frontier was fantastic and the best solo Iron Man in a very long time. He's currently writing Mighty Avengers and Loki: Agent of Asgard, and I don't think 3 books is out of the question to write. Fatal Frontier was rather whimsical and cracky with darker, more serious undertones, and I'd be ecstatic if I got the chance to read more IM in that vein.

Jason Aaron just left Amazing X-Men (which I'm sad about because it's easily been one of the most fun titles Marvel has put out in a long time), which leaves him with Thor and one of his own titles. I don't know if he'd try for something lofty and epic like with his early Thor or something more down-to-earth and fun like some of his other titles, including AXM, but I'd be interested in seeing him give IM a shot. As long as he doesn't do to Tony what he did to Thanos - but at least Tony is already a firmly established character...

Waid is leaving Hulk, which leaves him with Daredevil and a title for another company. His IM would probably be simpler but fresh, which might be a good idea, not to mention fun to read.

And too bad Hickman is done with Marvel for the time being after his Avengers run is over, because he writes Tony with a certain gravitas which admittedly may be more difficult to read in a solo book, but could be some of the most unique IM ever written. I'm thinking his hypothetical IM would have a similar tone as the later v4, Director of SHIELD stuff but on a more epic scale.

Also, I'm hoping this means Remender leaves Cap soon too...wishful thinking, I know...

YESSSSS to Al Ewing! He is my top pick too, although unfortunately he's said on his Tumblr that he feels he's already said everything he can about Tony Stark. Which is a shame because I absolutely loved Fatal Frontier. I thought he understood Tony's character in a way Gillen never did.

Your comment made me go dig through his tumblr to look up the post in question, haha (here's the link for anyone else who wants it: http://alewing.tumblr.com/post/72718716642/hello-mr-ewing-i-finished-reading-fatal-frontier).

Sad to hear, but hey, maybe he can change his mind...? His wording wasn't too final.

I didn't enjoy his run, but I still don't think he's done as much damage to Tony as Remender has to Cap. (Can they please both go away?)

Also, if Hickman is leaving Avengers and Gillen is moving to an "enormous opportunity" that's "utterly irresistible"...

I have no idea about the timing, but IM should be one of the biggest solo books at this point. Something more amazing would almost have to be an ongoing team book, right? (And Remender's already up for the next event. KILL IT WITH FIRE.)

Would Gillen really need to leave a title a year early just to plan for Avengers, though? It seems like too long a time-frame. There are supposed to be several new solo titles coming out of the end of Original Sin (Deathlok is one of them) - I'm going to call it being one of those.

Gillen also has non-Marvel titles that he's writing for, they were giving out one with Nazi zombies at Free Comic Book Day.

Thank god. I really disliked his run on the title. But I'll only be relieved when the final announcments are out about what title he'll get then and who will get Iron Man.

THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY~

But Gillen is a jerk in general and I'm sure he's going to ruin whatever he moves onto next. At least there's a chance I'll be able to buy Tony's book again now. I've missed him.

I'm curious what will happen. I always look forward to Gillen's stuff because I loved Young Avengers and Journey into Mystery so much and I never end up liking anything else that well. The whole baby-switching/adoption subplot/reveal still has me upset a little and I haven't actually read that title since...
