I know there are people who are really upset about this and it is understandable. They like the way canon is now and it can be scary/worrying to hear of major changes incoming. Especially with so little information combined with vague description, it is easy to jump to the worse conclusions.
The thing is in my readings of the comics I've discovered there is one consistency and that is that things keeps changing. I remember reading that Secret Wars is suppose to last at least a year. So, there is going to be an end to Battle World (I really doubt they are going to get rid of the multi-verse permanently.) It will be interesting to see where things will go from there. If nothing else it allows for great foder for fanfic.
My one disappointment is that it looks like it is going to be another year before things are resolved between Tony and Steve. Of course with the way things are in New Avengers and Avengers it was a slim hope in the first place. I just hope it doesn't just get swept under the rug like the civil war did and there is some actual resolution
Actually the Civil War is a great example of how things change for a few years then go back. You had Steve dead, Tony as director of SHIELD, Norman Osborne in charge, the avengers as outlaws, and then Siege happened and things slide back towards the status quo again.
So, in the present time things might be distressing, but there is always back issues and fanfiction. I'm adopting a wait and see policy. :)
That being said this announcement isn't really a huge surprise. Much like you said people have been talking about the all Ultimates Universe titles being canceled for awhile. I just think some people didn't fully think through the ramifications of the combination of that, the rumor that popular characters(like Miles) moving over to 616, and the teaser map of Battle World. This just confirms some more details on how that will happen.
They have an interactive map at marvel.com that shows some of the stuff for battleworld. Go to http://marvel.com/comics/events/323/secret_wars_2015 and click on 'Enter Battleworld.'
