This story involves permanent injury. Tony and Steve have to deal with the consequences of Steve’s heroic and selfless act that leads to permanent injury even with the serum. I highly recommend this story. I read the story out of order (this is the second in a series) and didn’t have a problem with reading it out of order. I highly recommend it. The hurt is visceral, the comfort gentle and exactly what you would expect from Tony.

Summary: As is traditional, when Tony emerges from his room after his first heat, he is gifted his first piece of omega jewelry. It will be the only item in his Chest for many years.

Notes: I just really like the concept of the jewelry and having a bridal chest. There's also another version of this same prompt by AngeNoir whose writing is always excellent. Having read this before I read AngeNoir's version was interesting. Also, I'm emotional. So, I cried. OTL

Title: Sail
Author: OneEightSix
Summary: Tony Stark mysteriously disappeared 4 weeks back on a regular op taking place in a rainy Sunday afternoon and disappeared. Finally, after a desperate search, he was found. Tony had been subjected to heavy torture, but by who, and why? No one knows. He hardly spoke a word of it since. But Steve is determined to get to the bottom of this, to bring the old Tony back.
Link: Sail (http://archiveofourown.org/works/718205/chapters/1330746)
Notes: Warnings for torture scenes, though not quite graphic or explicit. I think I just like the how exploration of Tony's muteness.

Title: Steve Rogers is a Child
Author: LagLemon
Summary: Tony gets into fights with Steve all the time and it's driving him insane. Sure, he's not the nicest guy in the world, but all he did was steal a little of the guy's sesame seed bagel - he didn't deserve to get yelled at for something stupid like that.
After drowning his sorrows in hot chocolate and complaining to Pepper about what happened, Tony gets a phone call from Natasha telling him to hurry back home. Something's happened - Steve has been attacked and he's not quite the same man he once was - he's been turned into a child.
With Steve out of commission, the team struggles with what to do and Tony finds himself filling roles he had never expected: babysitter and friend.
Link: Steve Roger is a Child (http://archiveofourown.org/works/966323/chapters/1895794)
Notes: Warnings for PTSD, medical experimentation and torture, drowning, violence, torture, psychological trauma, mild homophobia, etc (as pulled from the tags). Seriously, I really enjoy this fic. It's nice, slow, has a good build up. Also, Steve as a child! It's really interesting to read how Tony handles Steve and there's little details that are just tied up/wrapped up so neatly. Things you forget about make a reappearance. Also, you should read this for the Bagel thing alone. Seriously.

Title: File Down the Broken Edges
Author: forthegreatergood
Summary: Tony trips one of Doom’s new bioweapons and winds up with a lungful of sex pollen.
The cure? Sex with Steve.
The problem? They don’t get along, have problems using their words, and are in no way prepared to deal with having sex with each other. And that’s on a good day.

Notes: Warnings for explicit sexual content and dubious consent. You tell me, you wouldn't read this after seeing the summary. It's interesting exploration.

450 Feet Under (http://archiveofourown.org/works/3973711) by Veldeia, 23,999 words.
Because sometimes you just want a story where Tony gets trapped underground in a cave-in and the Avengers have to find and rescue him. A very recent story that is nonetheless absolutely classic h/c; it helps a lot that the author clearly really enjoys caves, as all the details serve to heighten the drama.

The Meaningless and All That's True (http://archiveofourown.org/works/820919) by missbecky, 36,058 words.
No h/c recs list would be complete without a Civil War fixit, and this fixit gives you all the CW closure you could ever have wanted: Tony is sent back through his own past and forced to relive (and regain the memories of) Civil War. He then gets to cuddle Steve a whole lot and process his new Civil War feelings. It's exceedingly cathartic and a great read.
These Cold Nights (http://archiveofourown.org/works/3067160) by Captain_Al, 10,619 words.
Fear Itself is not an event that has a lot of fanfiction about it, and this is one of the few stories that tackles the fallout from it -- and specifically, Tony's return to drinking to save the world -- head-on. Steve and Tony's discussion of it takes place, naturally, post-hypothermia in a hotel room in the middle of a snowstorm. Naturally, there is only one bed, so I'm sure you know what else happens. It's a story that handles all these familiar tropes really really well, and you can just luxuriate in it. I personally am fond of Tony having to undress poor hypothermic Steve.
Ultimates
Silence is the sound of rest(lessness) (http://archiveofourown.org/works/953920) by captainshellhead and vibraniumstark, 6916 words.
An Ults story set near the end of Ults, as Tony recovers from Reed's vivisection. I love the Steve POV here, and his interactions with Carol as he waits for Tony to wake up. And because it's Ults Steve, he naturally has to figure out exactly how he feels about Tony as he waits. Understated and sweet.

Lovecraft fusion fic. I haven't read any Lovecraft source material but this has such an amazing spooky, creepy vibe... fun to read late at night! As for the "terrible" part, there's a sickness with mysterious origins affecting the locals, and soon after, some members of the team start to show symptoms as well. There's gore throughout the fic but as I recall it doesn't apply to the main characters -- the looming sense of "OHHH NOOOOO" is much more prominent in my memory of this fic than anything else. That, and sassy Tony. Perfect blend of scary / dark / fun.

I like a lot of 'Tony pushes himself because he doesn't believe he's worthy' fics, but this one is one of my favorites. Poor Tony is trying so hard. It's a good thing that Steve gets a clue. Also, Fury is a nice balance of absolute bastard and trying to repress that he actually cares.
Anti-Virus by marinarusalka
Because Steve is a whiny patient and Tony tries so hard. XD It's cute and lovely.
