Invicible Iron Man #1 discussion post

It's finally here!
Thoughts, opinions, feels, guesses?

Vaguely incoherent

REACTION AND FEELS:

Initial Reaction: Yes. Yes! GOOD. PRETTY. MORE!! ALL THE PRETTY, WITTY TONY!!!

More Cerebral Reaction: Not much happened. How did this tie in from Secret Wars? What's the actual time line wrt the old 616? Is this 616???

Concluding Reaction: Good start. GOOD TONY. Interesting set up. Can't wait to find out more!

THOUGHTS AND SPECULATION:

Madame Masque. I hope she gets a good antagonistic role but I don't get a huge vibe of any sort from her in this issue. We know she'll be in the following issues but I'm not sure if she'll just be villain-of-the-month or if she'll actually be integral to progressing the story, whatever the story will be. (Yellowish glow. Infinity gem??? Time gem????? Wrong color but still. Where's that dang gem.)

Amara Perera will hopefully return as a Good Guy (Girl) Scientific Equal. She could be the love interest as well and I think I'm okay with that if it's done well.

And Doom. Wow. Prettyboy Victor von Doom. He does make a more logical antagonist to Iron Man given their similarities/differences. I will be enjoying their interactions! Is his side of the story going to be Battleworld related? They'll need to deal with that before they can move forward I think. Hopefully Doom'll stick around to be a regular, if that's the case.

And TONY. Pretty, adorable, dorky Tony. Bendis, Marquez, and Ponsor did him justice. I could not have hoped for better, I think. Tony is still a futurist and inventor at heart, even though we mostly only saw the latter. But this was a good start. I'm hopeful.

I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE ARMOR! How is he suiting up? It looks like it qas coming out his wrist device. Supercompressed nanomachines? Microdimension tech?? I don't know what I'm saying?? What can it do?? How is it better than the previous armors other than be an all purpose tool? I MUST KNOW.

Other things I must know are: resolution of Tony's adoption/Arno arc, resolution of Battleworld, resolution of SIM, TONY'S RELATIONSHIP TO STEVE????.

I just came off an Alias binge so my confidence in Bendis' writing was high. I dove straight into the issue and I regret nothing. And the art, oh boy. The art was wonderful. Clean, bright, expressive. Marquez and Ponsor deserve all the praise!

So. I liked it. I liked it a lot. Cautiously hopeful, but still hopeful.

I want to know more about the armor and all those resolutions, but I'm glad we didn't get it in an info dump.

I NEED MOOOOOORE!!!

Ps: Tony is such an adorable dork. I 💜 him so much.

I've mixed feelings on it, but overall it was good. I was enjoying it when reading it, but the reveal of doom at the end just made me internally groan. So, that tainted it. Instead of excitement over the confrontation I'm just like eyeroll. I think it is because I'm tired of Doom?

On to the good stuff. I loved the stuff with Madame Masque and the design of her current mask. The art over all is gorgeous. In the comic itself the armor was great and I didn't get that discordant feeling I feared I would. I thought the panel layout over all was good as well.

The floating head for FRIDAY's dialog in the armor was a nice touch. I wonder if she's a construct specifically for the reader, only visible to Tony or visible to everyone. I'm inclined to think the first since he never looks at her and she generally stays out of his visual field.

The character voices over all were good. Tony was charasmatic, a goof, confident and had that touch of self-hated. There was also an excellent transition between his social masks. It is early to tell with Dr. Amara Perara but she wasn't any of the tropes than I feared when I heard about her.

Specific fanon thoughts:
When he was talking about his new armor
"Armor not attached to my biology in that way that freaks just about everyone out but is completely attached to my brain synapses."
My mind replaced 'just about everyone' with Steve. :)

The date reminded me of so many fanfics.

FRIDAY didn't call him Boss. :( I loved this in AoU. Thinking about it though, Tony's AIs have never had the subserviant language that JARVIS did in the movies. And while Boss worked really well there to differentiate her from JARVIS, it wouldn't fit so well here.

Specific canon thoughts.

Tony never having anyone rebuff his kisses is a classic Tony trope, but I'm pretty sure it has happened before. I'll have to check to pull the actual incident.

Tony not working in his work shop for pleasure and enjoyment. This is such a chilling call back to Tony's desperation and mind set during the whole incursion thing. It wouldn't surprise me, if it was also a form of self punishment during that period.

Specific issue thoughts:

"or what they think they want."
Call back to SIM *squee*

The Thor moment was so over the top and funny, yet I could see it.

The SI Osaka break-in wasn't note worthy of mentioning, but Latveria was? Hrmmm have to see how things turn out.

So, Amara telling Tony about the mutant cure struck me as stupid and awful trusting. I could see and liked her not connecting the dots with telepathy and other ways to get the info from her brain itself because she's not used to thinking that way. It also gives her a failing that isn't overly cliché that makes her human and not the perfect girl.

Tony worrying about Amara thinking he was giving her the brush off made me smile and reminded me of my brother and his fiance first attempted date, which she cancelled because of the death of a relative.

Victor, at the end, was so anticlimatic for me that it killed my momentum.

I'm looking forward to the series, but not the Victor confrontation in the next issue.

The small bits I just read here give me hope that it will be good, but I have to wait a while longer. I bought a year's subscription before my birthday as a gift to myself and the first issue hasn't arrived yet. I'm still very excited, though!

Hmm. I feel like it's too early to comment on the story, since not much happened in this issue. I'm a lot more interested in Madam Masque than I am in Doctor Doom, so I hope she plays a big role in the plot going forward. Her opening scene was nicely effective.

I liked Amara and her interaction with Tony, but I agree that it was weird for her to come out with the info about the mutant cure so quickly. She's only just met him, and Tony is the guy who ran the SHRA not so long ago. This seems like an awfully big and dangerous thing for her to trust him with so quickly. I assume the cure is going to be important to the plot, but again, it's too early to tell.

The art is very, very pretty, and I like the character voices so far. I think overall my reaction is "cautiously hopeful."

I totally second more of Madam Masque

She makes an awesome antagonist for Tony, especially given all their long and angsty history. I really want to see the two of them interacting again.

Just got the comic! Will be reading soon. Also, www.comixology.com is having a sell of Iron Man collected editions sell until 10/12. Should I get 'Invincible Iron Man Vol. 1: The Five Nightmares'? Is it any good?

[identity profile] salmastryon.livejournal.com 2015-10-10 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
There are people who really dislike Fraction's run. For me Five Nightmares was one of the first Iron Man comics I read and I liked it. It introduces Zeke Stone as a villain and explains how Pepper got the RT in her chest.

However, it has its issues. The theme of the Tony's five greatest fears starts out well, but it gets muddled at the end unfortunately. It is been awhile since I've read it so I can't give more details than that without spoilers. The art isn't anything special.

I definitely think it is worth reading, but I'm not sure if it is worth owning. I read it through Unlimited.

Awesome! Thank you for your input. I probably won't buy it then. I'll put it on my maybe list.
