Cap/IronMan Remix 2016 - Rules and FAQ
We are very excited to start off the new year at
cap_ironman with a shiny new event! This will be our very first Cap/IronMan Remix and sign-ups will start on the 1st of January! (Artists keep an eye out for more information on our Reverse Bang. The arting stage for that will begin soon, too!)
As this is the first time we are running this event we’ve decided to put up the event information now to give everyone time to ask questions, before sign-ups start.

What is Cap/IronMan Remix?
Cap/Iron Man Remix is a remix challenge for Steve/Tony fic or fic focused on Steve and Tony. The challenge will be run for the first time this year using the AO3 exchange system. Participants sign up to write a remix story of at least 1,000 words based on another person’s Steve/Tony fic.
For now we've decided that the challenge will be for fic remixes only. We are considering opening a sort of "Remix Madness round" like Remix Redux is running every year in the future, that might be open for artist if we get enough interest for that. Any input on that is welcome.
That sounds interesting, but what is a Remix?
Probably the best known remix challenge around is Remix Redux a multi-fandom remix challenge that has been running for a few long years now and still is running over at
remixers_lounge. Basically a remix is a challenge where you write your own new version of a story that was written by another participant. The idea is to keep the basic plot, cast, pairings of the story, but rewrite it as your own stand-alone story, the way you would have written it if it were your story. You could do this by changing the style, by changing the point of view or by putting a surprising spin on things. Have you ever read a story and thought, if you had written this, you’d done it differently? That is what remixing is all about.
More information in our How To Write A Remix post.
The Schedule
Sign-ups:, 1st - 10th January
Assignments: sent by 11th January: check your email!
Writing period: write a remix of 1000 words or more based on one of the Steve/Tony or Steve &Tony stories written by the person you matched on
Deadline: 7th February.
Reveals: starting 12th February: read along as stories are gradually revealed during Feburary.
Author Reveals will happen a week after all stories have be revealed.
(Rules inspired by Remix Redux and
camelotremix)
Who can sign-up?
To sign up for this fest, you need to have at least three remixable fics of at least 1000 words each for your remixer to choose from. To count as “remixable” these three fics
- must be focused on the Steve/Tony pairing or on Steve and Tony and their friendship
- must be posted publicly and must be easy to find for your remixer (have a link to a masterlist of your Steve/Tony fic ready if you don’t post your fic on AO3, please)
- must be complete (no works in progress)
- can’t be crossovers (whether of two Marvel universes or with non-Marvel fandoms)
- should stand on their own (one shots that form a series are fine, if they can be truly read on their own)
- should not be co-written with anyone or a previously written remixe of other people's work.
You'll have the option of designating one "safe story" that cannot be remixed by the person that matches to you. This story won't count toward the three fics you need in order to qualify.
Note: Crossovers and fics of less than 1000 words are fair game for remixing even though they don’t count toward the eligibility requirement. This is only to make sure that your remixer will have at least a minimum of remixable fic with at least some bare bones of plot to choose from.
To participate, you must have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account. If you don't have an account at this time, you can easily request one here.
Sign-ups
We will do matching based on the following canon versions:
- MCU
- 616 Comics
- Ultimates Comics
- Marvel Adventures Comics
- Avengers Assemble (cartoon)
- Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (cartoon)
- Iron Man Noir
- Iron Man: Armored Adventures (cartoon)
- Marvel 1872
- Marvel 3490
You can only offer to have your fic remixed in one of these canons if you've written at least onestory fulfilling eligibility requirements described above set in that canon. And you must offer to remix in at least one of the canons listed. But the person who matches on your fic can remix any of your Steve/Tony stories if they choose to do so, even if they are set in a universe not listed here or that they didn’t match on.
This means you’re guaranteed to match on someone who has written at least one story of at least 1000 words in one canon universe you are familiar with, but you will have at least three fics to choose from in total. So for example if you are only familiar with MCU canon you will at least find one fic of 1000 words or more to remix that is MCU, but three Steve/Tony fics in total, two of which might be for other canon versions (or not).
Do not fret! If you don’t want to remix that one MCU story, you could for example also remix any of the stories for canon versions you’re not familiar with by changing the universe to a universe of your choice for your own fic. this is a remix challenge after all. More information in our How To Write A Remix post.
You can offer to write a remix for all of the canon versions. We require you to at least offer to remix in one of them.
How do I sign up?
There will be a sign-ups post going up on 1st January. Sign-ups will happen on AO3. In the sign-up post we require you to list the canon versions you’ve written at least one fic for that fulfills our eligibility rules listed above, but at the very least you have to fill in one canon. So if you only write for Marvel 616, you can only offer to be remixed in Marvel 616, but if you’ve written for more canon versions you can fill in all of those that are on the list and will appear in the tag set on AO3.
We also need you to provide a link to a list of all the Steve/Tony fics you’ve written in the “Link” section; this could be a website, a journal post collecting the links to all you fic or a fic journal with tags, a page at the AO3 or another archive that is easily accessible. If you don't have your fic listed or organized somewhere, please take care of that before you sign up.
After matching we will e-mail you your assignment, which we'll ask you to keep secret until author’s have been revealed.
Assignments
Assignments will go out no later than January 11th.
How do I fulfill my assignment?
You need to write one story of at least 1000 words that remixes one story written by your assigned remixee that is open for remixing (not their safe story) and upload it to the Cap/IronMan Remix 2016 collection before the deadline has passed. There is no upper wordcount limit for your story and you can write more than one story if you feel so inclined. Go wild!
The story you choose to remix can be any length and can be a crossover with another fandom, but it can’t be a work in progress, a previously written remix, a collaboration, or your remixee’s "safe story".
If you want to know more about posting a story to fulfill your assignment on AO3, you can find a description of how it works here.
I don’t like any of my remixee’s stories. Can you match me to somebody else?
The short answer is no. The challenge is to remix someone else's story and make it your own. So take one of the plots and write the story that you would have written and liked better. If your remixee wrote only stories that ALL hit very common triggers you share, please contact us and we’ll try and find a solution.
Expectations and Etiquette
This is not strictly speaking a gift exchange in the way that the Cap/Iron Man Holiday Exchange is. You are writing a remix that is supposed to be your own story. But please keep in mind that the person who wrote the original story will have their name attached to it and will read your story, so it should go without saying that you don’t use your remix to deliberately and directly bash the original fic or attack the creator. Don't make fun of their stories, kinks, chosen side pairings, etc.in namespace. please. Remember that the challenge is to write the story your way, so getting assigned to someone who doesn't write anything like you would gives you more room to be creative, not less.
Also: When stories go up, please, thank your remixer!! A remix is different from a gift exchange in that the point is not to write something your recipient/remixee will like, but rather to write the story your way. That said, the remixee is usually the person who knows the original best and has the best perspective to appreciate the remix. Most writers are eager to hear what their remixee thinks of the story, and courtesy demands that you read and acknowledge that someone has engaged with your work. If you can't think of anything positive to say, consider at least saying something like "Thank you for remixing my story."
Deadline, Extensions and Dropping out (Defaulting)
Completed stories must be posted to the Cap/IronMan Remix 2016 collection on AO3 by the deadline, where they will automatically appear as anonymous "Mystery Gifts" for the remixee. Please look at our tips for uploading gifts on AO3 for more information.
Do not upload incomplete stories. You can edit your story after the deadline, but this should be reserved for minor changes such as fixing typos. The mods will check all stories on the deadline, and any incomplete entries will be rejected.
Dropping out (Defaulting)
If you realize at any time that you won't be able to finish your remix, please hit the "Default" button on AO3 as soon as you know. (Click "Assignments" on your profile to find the button.) This lets the mods know that you won’t be able to finish your remix and they will look for a remixer to stand in for you.
Pinch-hitting
If you don't want to sign up for the challenge, but still want to participate, or if you're willing to write more than one story, you can help us out as a pinch-hitter. You also need an AO3 account for this. Please contact us at cap.im.events@gmail.com with the subject line “Remix Pinch Hitter”.
In the event we have issues matching someone, they will go out as a pinch hit right away. And if any author has to drop out, we'll also be needing pinch-hitters to step in for them. So if you might be able to help out, let us know!
Posting Period
From 14th February, every day one or more stories (depending on how many people sign up in the end) will be revealed on AO3, and announcements will be posted to the LJ community and the community Tumblr letting people know which remixes have been revealed. As we are choosing to reveal remixes in this way, please note that AO3 will at the moment NOT automatically notify the remixees via email once a “gift” for them has been revealed. (At the moment the mail is only triggered when the whole collection goes live all at once.)
Stories will remain anonymous until at least a week after the last fics were revealed.
Don't post your story anywhere else until the end of the fest. (But feel free to link and pimp to all the stories or post recs anywhere!) After authors have been revealed, you are welcome to post your fic anywhere you want, of course.

I write a lot of things that aren't technically crossovers but pull elements from other universes, and I'm wondering about eligibility for those. For example:
-- I have three straight 3490 fics, but 3490 has so little to it that I'm using a lot of backstory from 616 to flesh that world out. It's 100% faithful to what we do know of 3490, though.
--I have an MCU story that uses technology from Inception and has a few small nods to 616, but has no other crossover elements and can be read as a straight MCU story without any knowledge of Inception canon.
--I've got a Noir story that uses other canon elements as the inspiration for the plot, and is a genderswap story, but solidly fits within the timeline of Iron Man Noir and follows Noir canon and wouldn't necessarily require knowledge of those other canons to follow.
I'm not sure exactly how to draw the line-- and if the 3490 fics are eligible, then I'm easily eligible, but I'm not 100% sure how you're defining "crossover" for the purpose of eligibility.
Thanks!!!

Just ask yourself would someone who is only familiar with the version they matched on run into big problems in those cases and then count the stories where the answer is "yes" out.
The remixer can still chose any of these stories to remix in the end, even if they matched on something else. So to sign up you really only need 3 Steve/Tony stories that ARE meeting the eligibility requirements.
