Comics Wednesday: Discussion

We didn't have one of these in a while and we thought with the movie coming out and a lot going on in comics that is leading up to Civil War II we should give some room to comics discussion again.

Lots is going on for both of them. So with what happened in Captain America: Sam Wilson #7 & #8 and International Iron Man #2 and Avengers Standoff: Assault On Pleasant Hill Omega out today, how do we feel about all of it?

Discuss away about all the comics and all Steve and Tony moments (new issues, old issues, all you want to talk about is welcome) and be aware that this discussion may have spoilers for comics you haven't read yet.

A discussion post for everyone who gets to see Captain America: Civil War early will go up later tonight or early tomorrow. If you are catching a preview or just prefer to talk comics on chat there is also always the #cap-im-spoilers channel.

I enjoyed Cap 7/8 and Omega. I like the slightly humorous bent of scenes like the tea party, though that does unfortunately make the villains seem more wacky than scary imo.

And Steve! Poor Steve in the bowling alley scene. And Tony shows up in his thoughts not once, but twice. :)

Also, "This team just got way hotter shirtless" was the best of lines. :D

I don't think I've ever posted in one of these threads before...

I'm really enjoying Spencer's Cap run and his work on Standoff -- which I think is one of my favorite recent crossovers, mostly because of his writing. I really appreciate how he just goes for the wacky stuff (Kraven the Hunter having a tea party!) and sells it wholeheartedly (I even liked the fight scene and Zemo's villain banter and I usually... don't care), and how in the Cap run he's basically shamelessly bringing back the Gruenwald stuff (the sidekicks! the hotline! the Serpent Society! Capwolf! Capwoooooolf!). Even in the last Standoff issue he namedropped Teen Tony, and it makes me really excited to see how he's going to take Steve back to his roots (which he remembers are in Manhattan, so I'm already thrilled).

What was up with that one page of Omega near the end where Hill is talking to all the Avengers (yay, Steve and Tony together again) and Steve's still old? Coloring error?

I would pay them NOT to do Civil War II, though.

On the minus side, I'm enjoying Bendis' IM run a lot less than I thought I would. Sure, okay, I'm enjoying the Doom stuff. And Maleev's art in International is gorgeous. But I don't really like how he's writing Tony as a guy who basically brings smart-ass quips at the expense of everything else (I guess this is his attempt to write him like RDJ?) and I feel like there's a lot of unconscious sexism I'm not cool with. Also, didn't Tony already have, as a teenager, a girlfriend that Howard forbade him to date because she was the daughter of one of his business rivals? I'm just kind of confused as to why we need more.

I think my current favorite Tony is that Ms. Marvel panel today and also the Tony in the Squirrel Girl recap pages.

Oh, I loved the crossover so much. Which was actually.... surprising. I waited till everything was out to read it, but it really was well coordinated between the various issues and I enjoyed the little ways it introduced new (future) series. I am a little less thrilled about two Captain America as I wished they had let Sam Wilson be the only one, at least for a little more, as they did when Bucky was Cap.
Captain America's run (with Sam) is amazing. I've never read old Cap issues, but I'm about to start if that is the general feeling there is in there.

Bendis' Iron Man (both of them) is meh. I am immensely disliking Invincible Iron Man even if I liked the initial plot (magic and Doom) but- well, everything is a joke. Every character looks the same, Spiderman talks like Iron Man, no Pepper, nothing about Superior Iron Man to explain what happened either.
It's still too soon for me to say something about International Iron Man but I am confused by the timeline. How old is Tony there? Also, that woman "scammed" Tony- again, Tony? Isn't this supposed to be after the whole Sunset Bain's ordeal?

I'm only reading Bendis Iron Man now, and I love them both to pieces.

They're really different in tone, and it's awesome. (Although it's a shame Deodato is a substitute artist for Marquez; Marquez was awesome.)

Invincible IM is SO GOOD. It's the Tony I missed. He cares about people so much and is insecure and covers it and just wants to do something good. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE his and Doom's interactions. And Amara! Amara is great, and the newest issue especially gave me lots of feels about her. I can't wait for more!

International has beautiful art (known to us from the Confession, so :P ), and I'm really interested in the story. College baby Tony was very cute. I liked it. I'm curious as to where it'll go, and how Doom fits in.

I'm so happy with them, I can't even say, it'd been so long without any good Iron Man comics. *hugs Bendis IM*
