Cap-IM Newsletter: July 11 - August 23rd
Official Comm News:
Lots of stuff going on it the past few weeks! First off, most recently, we are currently having a community mod vote; please see details at the link. You must have joined the LJ community before the vote commenced in order to participate in the current vote.
The Big Bang continues to roll along, with the most recent Support and Chatter post available here. BB drafts (minimum 80%, which is at least 20k words) are due September 28th, and you do not need to have signed up ahead of time to submit a draft.
The Tiny Reverse Bang continues to roll along, with the following rounds opening since the last newsletter: Round 5: Locked, Round 6: A Taste of Iron, Round 7: Long day, Round 8: (bring me in) out of the cold, Round 9: Bloody love, and Round 10: caught you! Roundups are made at the start of each new round but you can always still go back and provide fills for previous rounds! So long as the fills are posted (with the proper tag) before the end of the TRB overall, they'll get included in the overall TRB masterlist.
Recently, a test was conducted on AO3 for the Cap-Ironman Holiday Exchange to ensure that we would be able to run the exchange despite the implementation of recent update AO3-4576. Thank you to everybody who took the time to sign up for that test exchange. It has now been completed and deleted, so shouldn't be clogging up your AO3 Assignments. Via this test, we learned that our bypass would not work. Fortunately, the mods of the Xmen Remix have come up with a clever workaround, albeit one that requires some work to go through. Also fortunately, the AO3 has listened to feedback and has modified AO3-4576 to place a cap of 50 people, and plans to implement a mod override on matching, although they don't have a timeframe on the latter yet. Unfortunately, if the mod override is not implemented before October, the Cap-Ironman Holiday Exchange is highly likely to run into problems, since we are expecting just over 50 people and do hand-matching. The Holiday Exchange will run no matter what; however, the Holiday Exchange mod team will be evaluating closer to sign-ups whether or it is feasible to run sign-ups on AO3. If it is decided not, then sign-ups will run through a third-party platform. Most likely, gifts will still be posted through the AO3 in that case.
...wow, that's a doozy of a paragraph. Moving on! The Rec Week is over but you have a day or two to post further recs, because I keep getting hammered at work and having to put off rolling up the masterlist. So if you would like to post more recs, please check out the posts per the schedule below:
Funny Friday, July 1st: Humour / Fluff
Throbbing Thursday, July 7th: Porn / Romance
Weekly Wednesday, July 13th: Action / Adventure
(Not So) Terrible Tuesday, July 19th: Hurt/Comfort
Mournful Monday, July 25th: Dark / Angst
Synergy Sunday, July 31st: Works created for cap-ironman community challenges, exchanges, and bangs
Wacky Saturday, July ???: For all works too wonderful to be confined to a sensible schedule!
The New Bingo Round: 2016 Round 2 has opened! The Roundup for the previous round is also available is the works round-up below.
A reminder to everyone that we do Comics Wednesday Discussion posts when new comics are released each Wednesday (or Thursday, depending on where in the world you live). Everyone is welcome to participate in these discussions; we keep commenting open so that you do not need a LJ account to comment on these posts.
Aaaaand finally (wow, that was a lot): we have a new community account on Imzy. (You can also get an account of your own at the link, faster than through the main Imzy page.) It's a bit bare at the moment but may be used for discussion in the future, depending on what the community members want to do with it. If you like the idea of having discussion on Imzy, speak up here (or even better, start discussing over there). Discussions on LJ remain, as always, A-okay and open to people without LJ accounts.
Marvel News:
Comics is still full of Civil War II (which has slipped a month, Edit: but it's also getting an additional issue--thank you for pointing this out, Laire!). Beware spoilers in links. Nick Spencer has provided a couple of tantalizing hints about The Oath, promised to mirror The Confession. Tomorrow we have a couple of new issues out: International Iron Man #6 (lettered preview) and the utterly delicious Captain America: Steve Rogers #4 (lettered preview) (cover, because it is so lovely). There's also a CWII tie-in with Captain Marvel #12 (lettered preview), and Uncanny Avengers #12 (lettered preview).
Not much going on for the MCU side at the moment. In related MCU news, there are set pics out from Thor, and Jessica Jones won a Hugo.
In animation news, Avengers Assemble is back for the summer and has been very good to us with Steve/Tony interaction in some of the most recent episodes, particularly "The Kids Are Alright". Also, there's Kamala! Awww.

Er, anyway. The math: so, for any individual participant (with 53 participants overall, giving 52 potential matches under hand-matching), the probability of a failure state is only (52-50)/52=0.04, which is quite low. Unfortunately we're gonna get mucked up even if there's only a few failures. Probability of success on any particular match is 1-(52-50)/52=0.96, but probability of success on all matches requires that this be raised to the power of 53, which works out to 0.125.
In other words, seven times out of eight matching runs, there will be one or more problems. Now, if the 'regenerate matches' option worked to regenerate the list as well as the matches, then we could just push the button until we got lucky number 8, although checking this every time would actually... make that so labour intensive as to not be worth it, so nevermind. In any case, from the Xmen remix's account this is not so: the curtailed list is not regenerated when the matches are. So we only get one shot with seven-to-one against odds.
...admittedly, it's been a while since I did probability, if I'm getting this wrong lemme know.
Edit to add: If we have under 50 participants we'd be fine. The HE is just in sort of a weird position that way :P

We are not going to have under 50 participants, so doing everything by hand seems like the best possible option.
