Wednesday: What Are You Reading?

In the spirit of new comic book day, Wednesdays will be dedicated to discussing anything on your reading list right now! Whether they be new comic releases from today, or a novel you've finally gotten around to starting, or your third reread of your favorite 200k-word slow-burn fanfiction, don't hesitate to talk about whatever story's on your mind! Maybe you're still working your way through all the Cap/IM Reverse Bang works? Or staying updated on the Bingo Works that have been posted so far?

Let us know what you've been reading this past week and what's next on your queue! If you have any spoilers in your comment, you can use the following to help censor them:

Remember to stay positive and constructive in these discussions! If you're not a fan of the comic, book, fanfic, etc. that someone else is enjoying, there's no need to partake in that particular conversation.

Haha, I'm coming of a fic deadline marathon, so I need a little fic break, before I catch up with RBB reading.

For some reason, I'm rereading Ults now. Again. Because it just gets better and better every time and I NEED ALL THE RESEARCH.

It's terrible and glorious and the weirdest comfort read I can think of right now.

It's always a good time to reread Ults! But I get what you mean—it's really stress-free to engage in stories where the bottom line is: "this is what it is," without being concerned whether it's a 'good' story or not. It's nice to relax and just have fun reading!

It's nice to relax and just have fun reading!

Yeah, it's relaxing and kind of safe. And there are always little details that I discover upon rereading, so that is fun, too.

I LOVE ULT, I just finished reading Liar and saving the world by magicasan and love it so much! So I went looking up for more ULT fic and found "Dying for a drink" by Tsukiinoferii, I never thought ultimate Vampire Tony is what had been missing in my life.

I'm glad [personal profile] magicasen's fic made you search out more Ults. \o/ I haven't even read it yet and I'm sure it's fantastic, because it's magic's fic.

I remember "Dying for a drink", yes!

I LOVE Dying for a drink! It's one of my favourite fics ever. It has my two favourite things: vampires and Tony!

I've recently started reading Le Scorpion, a Franco-Belgian comic set during the 18th century with a lot of swashbuckling, and it's beautifully illustrated. I don't necessarily recommend it to everyone, but it's very entertaining, with a lot of fun fighting and adventuring and everyone looking great in era-appropriate clothing.

......Plus, the main character maaaaay look like old-timey swashbuckling Tony in thigh-highs, if that's relevant to anybody's interests:

I'm so gleeful you're reading this now. I reread the whole run recently and gushed over the totally awesome art by Enrico Marini, whose art I just adore so much. Honestly I could stare at the backgrounds and details alone for ages. I nominated Amando/Mejai for rarepairs this year, too, haha. All the hate-love, please. XD (Without hope of getting it, of course, blah.)

And I really can't get enough of all the historical intrigue and swashbuckling and sexiness and Machiavellian history lessons. And, damn, everyone is just so messed up. I LOVE MESSED UP.

This makes me think that in case I actually do attempt to enter our BB this year, it should totally be time travel Noir Tony, because obviously Amando and his love for ancient culture and artifacts is the best template and that is not even talking about the boots.

I think, now that I'm on DW and have more icon slots, I totally need icons of this. XD

The attention to detail and the rendering technique of the artwork is so incredible, I kept getting sidetracked while reading! I've only finished the first volume so far, so it might take a bit for me to get through the rest of the trades, but I'll be sure to keep you updated as I do :D

(Oh Armando, you can be such an ass but you're so beautiful.)

YES. PLEASE GIVE US NOIR TONY IN THE 18TH CENTURY. I'm much more superficial than you are, because I just want him in beautiful clothes HAHAHHA
navaan: (Marvel MA basketball date)

[personal profile] navaan 2017-06-21 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, god he is really awesome with details. I think I came across his art in Desert Star first, when I had one of my Western phases and it just gripped me (and boy, that comic does need to come with serious content warnings, haha), but with the setting everything is lush and decadent and perfect in Le Scorpion. I really adore the clothes and landscapes and all the damn moment they spent in fully furnished rooms. I can just stare.

And then, of course, there is the hero who looks like pissed of Tony 100% of the time.

Let me know what you think of the mysteries that come up as you keep reading! And there are some awesome sidecharacters ahead, I will love to gush about.

OKAY!! I think you will need to hold my hand to keep writing all the things but I'll try my best. XD

I'm much more superficial than you are, because I just want him in beautiful clothes HAHAHHA

I'm not sure you are more superficial than me there. I'm thinking of how to get him out of these clothes already. (So, just like Steve then. Haha. XD)

UM, GOOD. (And yes, exactly like Steve, heh.)

I'll be there holding your hand for everything on your to-write list \o/

Wow, that really DOES look like 18th-century Tony. Oh, but my Italian history is not good. Hmmmmm...

I think it's easy to go with the flow, since a lot of the premise is...very hammy, HAHA. Or you can ogle at the pretty visuals at the very least!

Still working my way through RBBs. Next up: urban fantasy by MarinaRusalka.

I'm also reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which is a BIT early for MCU Steve but I think would inform him. Plus it was fabulously popular during WWII, so he may well have read it.

Always looking for period recs for Steve and Noir Howard, if anyone has any.

I like A Tree Grow in Brooklyn!! The story went in quite slow pace but it still being able to capture my attention all throughout the book.

I gather it's school reading for a lot of Americans, but I only just got to it now. I'm about half way in and really love it. It is pretty slow in terms of plot, but the writing is gorgeous and I love the characters. It's easy to imagine Steve growing up in the same kind of situation.

[personal profile] silverink58 2017-06-22 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I didn't know that. most of the time, my high school literature involved one prince who was kidnapped by female giant of the sea (some non con and stockholme syndrom involved in there but it not like I know about it at the time.) then he was rescued by a mermaid, end up sleeping with her, gone back to his country and leave her pragnabt.....thennn I lost the plot after that,(it's a really long ine) but I remember that he always end up sleeping with one girls to another.. (Now that I think about this, why on earth does people teach children with this!?!)
Yes, I think I was fell in love the moment I read the first paragraph of that book,it's just simply beautiful.

On the fics side, I've read navaan's RBB #1, Find Yourself Some Truth (Carrying the Shield) and IT'S THE BEST AND I LOVE IT.
I've also reread Leviosa by runningondreams last night, as it's my favourite comfort fic! Definitely a rec.

On the canon side, it is a Wednesday! Slight spoilers here.

- Invincible Iron Man: oh my god Riri is so cute I can't deal with that. And I love AI Tony mentoring her. Such a good comic, and awesome art, too. Can't wait for more!
- Secret Empire - Brave New World #2 had three stories, but I want to focus on the first. I absolutely loved it. We got to see more of Rayshaun, and how he got to become a hero - with Tony's help and encouragement! AI TONY WAS THE ABSOLUTE BEST THERE. I love how we so often see him supporting baby heroes now. Also, he was extra hot.
- Captain America: Steve Rogers - I like that they finally touched on the international issue (I'm used to American comics going basically "the world = the US" :P ). Steve's speech was terrible, exactly the way it should've been. They're really not glossing over anything and Steve makes a chilling villain. I almost felt bad for Namor, though. Also featuring random lesbian kiss! That was nice.

Thank you so much, [personal profile] laireshi! I think I would never even have managed to finsih it if you hadn't listened to all my woes while working on it. I hope you'll like the rest I have planned for this verse too!

I love Leviosa. It's just such a great fic.

Haven't read Brave New World, because so much important DC on my pull list today, but it sounds like I really should get to it.

I adored the random lesbian kiss. XD And, yes, god Steve makes a chilling villain. As it should be.

My favorite thing from this week's comics was actually today's Secret Empire Underground. It only had a little bit of Tony, but they all went to the Savage Land, so there was some QUALITY DINOSAUR PUNCHING. This is why I read comics.

Underground was too much fun. Bobbi the leader was too much fun and Herc... I can never get sick of Herc. The team seemed so random when it started but the dynamics are great.

With my new found freedom from college I've been bouncing between catching up on my comic stockpile and reading as many RBB's as I can manage (I just finished Magicasen's fantastic To Liars and Saving the World and am eagerly getting ready to knuckle down and read Another Lonely Hour (The Ultimates War) Which I've been so excited for but just haven't had the time to read it all in one burst like I want to. (All the Ults coming out of RBB feels like the best kind of blessing))

In Comic's I've just reached Invincible Ironman #5 and Captain America: Steve Rogers #15 from my last London excursion to buy comics in April and I must say:
- Riri continues to be an absolute delight who soothes every worry I ever had about a new person donning the suit (A polar opposite to Doom and Infamous Ironman really). And protective AI tony is a fantastic blue hologram in full on mentor mode that I'm enjoying as much as I thought I would.
- As for Cap, as much as I may dislike the principle of the storyline, I will admit seeing the manipulative and downright genius side of Steve brought out by the Cosmic cube is pretty stunning. He's dangerous, clever and you can almost see the power that flows around him, and he certainly knows its there. Watching him manipulate Tony, Sam, Carol and more is heart wrenching, but It's undeniable he's a master at what he's doing, and really makes you question to what extent this existed in Good!CAP. Mini review over, I can't wait to catch up and reach secret empire, so I can see it in full context outside of ripped panels.

Outside of fandom, I'm considering buying the Harry Potter audiobooks to re-live my childhood of summers with sometimes faulty cassette tapes and Steven Fry at my grandparents. It's not quite reading, but it's close!
