Probably a dumb question, but as I'm not a comic reader I don't know the answer. How is it that the skrulls can know enough about their (victims? Targets???) to infiltrate them successfully? Like, looking like them is one thing, but knowing names and personalities and relationships is another matter entirely. Do they spy? Do they have mind reading tech or empathic powers? Is it hand waves comic book science? Inquiring minds need to know!!

so in whatever book it is where danny+peter+luke+jess drew are on the avengers, right after steve and tony reform the team right after the raft, jess drew is actually VERANKE, the skrull queen, that whole time, and there is an entire arc you can read that shows that there's this ritual that happens to give them memories. some skrulls don't even know they're skrulls! it seems like only the really high-level ones get to know what's going on. I think it's new avengers? it's pre-secret invasion, and some of the issues i'm thinking of definitely take place during house of M. lemme go find it.

ALSO, some skrulls have telepathy! there's a whole x-men secret invasion situation where emma is having a really hard time because they're doing some psychic projection that's pulling the whole team down (west coast). ultimately it's not the shit-show that the avengers in the savage land was, but. ALSO, those avenger-skrulls in the savage lands are exhibit a: skrulls that had the ritual done but don't remember they're skrulls after. So it's like a mind-dump. Memories, emotions, etc. From then on it's an infiltration (see: veranke and the hank-skrull)

I also have extensive headcanons about this because it's Relevant to my Fics and a lot of notes somewhere to keep track of what is explicitly canon. I'll look for that too.

also generally if it's skrulls, assume: SCIENCE! they've lost the ability to naturally evolve so their entire society revolves around research and self-improvement through chemicals and other horrendous procedures. although there is some mysticism as well - the ritual, canonically depicted, that i'm thinking of definitely includes what looks like a circle of priestesses and a dias and a blood-soaked rag. so, take that for what you will.
