Scrubbing his face with one hand, Steve sighed and looked ruefully at the present. He didn't know what he was thinking, well he did, but it seemed foolish now. Steve had seen it in the store, thought of Tony, and immediately bought it. Tony had given him - the team so much and he just wanted to give back a little, but the men was a billionaire, what use did he have for anything Steve could give him? Knowing Tony, he probably had the book anyway.
The paper crinkled under Steve's fingers as he picked up it up. He frowned. It seemed like a waste to just let it gather dust.
Sighing again, Steve asked, "JARVIS, where is Tony?"
Wasn't it the thought that counts anyway?

How many years had Pepper prayed and begged any deity who might listen for Tony to have even just one birthday party where he didn't marinade himself in expensive bourbon and publicly make a fool of himself in the wee hours of the morning? Now that Pepper was getting what she always wanted, she wasn't so sure that she wanted it anymore.
Tony finally pried himself out from between Thor and a drunkenly affectionate Rhodey and, wiggling his fingers across the room at Natasha, slipped out toward the elevator. Pepper sipped her drink one last time before setting it down and walking briskly after him. They may have broken up months ago, but she just couldn't stand to see Tony be so alone on his birthday. She reached the elevator just in time to Risky Business herself through the doors right before JARVIS slid them closed.
Tony's eyes snapped up from his phone in genuine shock. "Pep? What are you doing?"
"This isn't right, Tony," she slurred, suddenly well aware of her own tipsy state. "You shouldn't be going to bed so early on your birthday."
Tony raised his eyebrows at her in amusement, so Pepper smacked him lightly in the chest before continuing.
"Not like that, you leach! It's just that I know you and I know how you like to celebrate and this isn't it. I'm going with you and we can talk or watch movies or eat your whole secret stash of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream or whatever you want to do. Consider it my gift to you this year."
"Pepper," Tony grinned at her affectionately, "you're the world's sweetest drunk and I love you for it, but I'm happy turning in early. I've had a great day and a great party, so now I'm going to go finish unwrapping my gifts and go to bed."
"I can help you," Pepper interrupted. "Please, Tony? You don't have to be alone! It's all my fault, isn't it? You don't have to punish yourself! Just because we didn't work out doesn't mean that you have to isolate yourself from the world. Let's celebrate, just you and me. We're still friends, aren't we?"
Tony lifted Pepper's chin, forcing her to meet his warm gaze. "I promise I'll take a raincheck for a night when you're a little more sober and I've got a little more inclination for company. Jay? Be a sport and take us back to the communal floor so that Ms. Potts might enjoy a few more gin and tonics with the other party animals?"
Except Pepper suddenly realized where they were, and they just do happened to be stopped at the penthouse level.
"JARVIS, override code alpha-lima-foxtrot-6173-papa. Open the doors," Pepper demanded over Tony's calls for JARVIS to stop listening to her. If Tony was going to wallow in self pity, she was going to have to be more forceful with her offer to keep him company.
Sure enough, the door slid open to reveal the penthouse...and a very naked Steve Rogers caught mid motion as he tried to retrieve his awful plaid shirt from the floor near his feet in order to cover his manhood. Obviously the cupcake he had been holding in front of him wasn't anywhere near large enough for the task.
"JARVIS, for the love of Odin, close the doors!" Tony finally commanded, giving Steve a tiny bit of privacy as he dashed for the bathroom. Pepper turned slowly toward Tony, hands still clasped over her mouth in shock.
"Can you take us to the common floor now, Jay?! Thanks for outing our little secret! And thanks, Pep. Obviously you stalled me long enough that my gift unwrapped itself and now I'm going to have to coax it out of the bathroom and then convince it to stay unwrapped. Or maybe to let me unwrap him again. We'll have to see where the night leads us."
The elevator doors opened again on the common floor and Tony gently nudged Pepper through them. "As an apology," Tony continues, "I expect you to forget what you just saw. This is new and fragile and we've agreed to keep it quiet until we've gotten our footing. Now, go play with the other kids while I finish celebrating my birthday."
Pepper watched the elevator close around Tony as he have her an impatient little shooing motion. "Well," she said softly to herself, "I think I know what I want for Christmas."
