Cap/Ironman REMIX 2018: Rules and FAQ
Welcome to our 2018 Remix Event! If you’re new to remixes, please check out Fandom Remix History and our Remix How-To.
Our remix challenge has 3 parts to accommodate different levels of participation:
• Remix Exchange (open to writers with sign-up)
• Relay Remix (open to artists and writers with sign-up)
• Remix Madness (open to artists and writers)

Sign-ups for Remix Relay Open: December 9
Sign-ups for Remix Exchange Open: December 15
Sign-ups for Remix Relay Close: December 29
Sign-ups for Remix Exchange Close: January 7
Assignments: sent no later than January 9
Remix Madness opens: January 20th
Exchange Deadline: February 11th
Reveals: 14th February onward
Final Remix Madness Submissions due: TBD
To sign up for the exchange, you must have an AO3 account and at least 3 eligible fics of at least 1000 words* for your remixer to choose from. Eligible fics:
• must be Steve/Tony or gen focused on Steve and Tony’s friendship
• must be COMPLETE
• must be stand-alone
• must be publicly posted – if not on AO3, accessible elsewhere
• must NOT be crossovers/fusions, even across Marvel Universes
• must NOT be co-written with anyone
• must NOT be a previously written remix.
You’ll have the option of designating one “safe story” that cannot be remixed.
*Crossovers and fics of less than 1000 words are fair game for remixing, though they do not count towards the eligibility requirement. This gives your remixer more options.
Sign-up HERE at the AO3 Collection.
Matching is based on the following canons:
• MCU
• 616 Comics
• Ultimates Comics
• Marvel Adventures Comics
• Avengers Academy (game)
• Avengers Assemble (cartoon)
• Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (cartoon)
• Iron Man Noir
• Iron Man: Armored Adventures (cartoon)
• Marvel 1872
• Marvel 3490
In your AO3 sign-up, you will make an “Request”' This helps us match you based on what you’ve already written. In this section, you must tag at least one of the above canons, provided you have written fic set in that canon that meets the eligibility requirements described above. You may tag additional canons as long as you have written at least one eligible fic per canon tagged. You can only offer to be remixed for the canons you have written in. For example, if you only write for 616, you can only tag 616 in this section. However, the person who matches with you may remix any of your Steve/Tony stories if they so choose, regardless of canon.
In your “offer” section, you should tag canons you are familiar with / would be comfortable remixing in. You may tag as many canons as you like, provided you have written for at least one of them.
In the “link” section, you need to provide a link to all your Steve/Tony fic – AO3, livejournal, ff.net – and it must be easily accessible (not locked).
After matching, we will email you your assignment, no later than January 9th. Please keep your assignment secret until reveals!
Pick one of your match’s stories to remix. You may choose anything that is not a WIP, a previously written remix, a collaboration, or your remixee’s “safe” story. The story you choose MAY be a crossover.
Write a 1000 word minimum remix. There is no upper word limit. You may write more than one story, if so inclined.
All works must be focused on Steve and Tony (gen or shippy). If there is romance then the focus should be on the Steve/Tony pairing and it should be “endgame” in some way if other background relationships are included. Multiverse or timetravel moresomes with more than one version of Steve and Tony coming together are allowed and encouraged, of course, other characters should not be part of the main paring.
To FULFILL YOUR ASSIGNMENT: upload your story to the Cap/IronMan Fanfic Remix 2018 collection by February 11th or earlier. Your submission will automatically appear as an anonymous “Mystery Gift” for the remixee. Check out our tips for uploading on AO3 for more information.
This is not a gift exchange in the way that the Holiday Exchange is – you are creating a story that is new and your own, rather than catering to the tastes of your remixee. That said, bear in mind that the author of the original work will have their name attached. Do not use your remix to bash the original fic or attack the creator. Do not make fun of their stories, kinks, side pairings, etc, in namespace. The challenge is creativity – rise to it!
Remember to thank your remixer when stories go up – your remixee knows the original best and will best appreciate the remix. Most writers are eager to hear what their remixee thinks of the story, and courtesy demands that you acknowledge when someone engages with your work! Be gracious.
All Exchange stories must be completed and uploaded to the AO3 collection by February 11th, 10:00PM UTC (What time is that for me?). DO NOT upload incomplete stories. AO3 lets you edit after the deadline, but please reserve this for minor changes such as fixing typos. The mods will check all stories on the deadline, and any incomplete entries will be rejected.
If you realize at any time that you won’t be able to finish your story, please hit the “Default” button on AO3 as soon as you know. (Find it under “assignments” on your profile). The mods will look for pinch-hitter to stand in for you. All defaults before the deadline has passed are without penalty.
You can ask for an extension by emailing the mods at cap.im.events@gmail.com. Defaulting after the exchange deadline is not penalty free.
If an author has to drop out, we will need pinch-hitters to step in and fulfill their assignment! Also, in the event that we have issues matching someone, they will also go out as a pinch-hit right away. If you don’t want to sign up for the challenge, but still want to participate, or if you’re willing to write more than one story, please consider signing up as a pinch-hitter. You can contact us at cap.im.events@gmail.com with the subject “Remix Pinch Hitter.”
From February 14th onward, each day one or more stories will be revealed on AO3 and announced on LJ/DW/Tumblr. Be aware that AO3 only sends notifications when an entire collection is revealed, so check back often to see if something was posted for you.
Stories will remain anonymous until at least two days after the last fics are revealed.
Do not post your story anywhere else until the end of the fest. DO feel free to link and plug all stories/recs anywhere you see fit! After authors have been revealed, you are welcome to post your fic anywhere.
Remix Madness is a side event similar to Holiday Exchange community prompts, open to all Steve/Tony artists and writers. You don’t have to participate in the main remix exchange to play; anyone with an AO3 account who has written or drawn at least one piece of Steve/Tony work can join! The round will close when all remixes from the Remix Exchange have been revealed and we’ll give a 24 hour warning before closing the collection for entries.
The rules will be similar to last year’s, and we will announce them when we open the collection for business on January 20th.
Relay Remix is another side event for those of you who can’t get enough of remix challenges! This event is not an exchange, it’s a remix chain in the style of a game of telephone. Speed is of the essence! It is open to artists and writers.
It works like this: someone sends us a starting fanwork, and the mods will pass it on to the next person in a chain of signed-up participants. The next person creates a remix, sends it back to the mods, who send it to the next person on the list, and so on until the chain is complete. At the end, the person who created the original work will get to do the final remix.
• Sign-ups begin here and now, December 9th, and will be accepted in the order we receive your information. Send us an email at cap.im.events@gmail.com with your AO3 name and an email address that you check frequently. In the body of the email, indicate if you have an unposted Steve/Tony fanwork that you would like to offer up as a starting fanwork. Remember – this means you also do the final remix if yours goes up first. Sign-ups for Relay close on December 29th.
• You will be assigned a codename and share a doc with participants that includes expected dates for their remixing periods.
• All remixes must be fic or art. Fic must be at least 500 words, and art must be digitally or traditionally drawn images (no manips) or fully realized sketches.
• Starting fanworks and remixes should not involve the following common triggers: rape/non-con, non-canonical character death, graphic torture, or underage
• No non-marvel crossovers allowed; the only fandom we reliably share is Steve/Tony.
• All marvel verses and AUs are acceptable. This means you may receive a fanwork for a universe you are unfamiliar with – you can remix it however you choose.
• Starting fanworks as well as all following fanworks must be focused on Steve and Tony (gen or shippy); no threesomes in the main pairing allowed
• Once you receive your mod email with a fanwork to remix, you have 7 days to return your remix. Treat it as a flashwork challenge – the sooner you get it back, the better.
• If you are having trouble with deadlines, please contact us as soon as possible and let us know you need a later date or a default. We will arrange for the next person in line to take your place.
• If you drop out and finish your remix after the fact, you may post it, but it will not be forwarded – so it won’t be remixed by anyone else.
• You may sign up as a “stand-by” participant in case of drop-outs.
Q: What is a Remix?
A remix is a re-imagining of a fanwork that was made by another participant. The idea is to keep the basic plot, cast, and pairings of the original, but change other elements to recreate it as your own, new, stand-alone piece. Have you ever read a story and thought, “If I’d written this, I would have done it differently?” That is what remixing is all about.
The best-known (and first) remix challenge around is Remix Redux, a multi-fandom remix challenge that has been running for a few years now at remixers_lounge.
Q: I’m having trouble thinking of ways to remix.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of things to try:
● switching POV
● changing the tone/mood
● adding or subtracting thematic elements of the original
● using flashbacks or jumping forward in time
● writing or drawing a set-up to the original plot
● transplanting the work into a new universe
● writing a timestamp or a missing scene
Find more ideas and information in our Remix - How To post.
Q: I’m worried about AO3 matching. How will you make sure I get something I can work with?
The AO3 matching system means you’re guaranteed to match with someone who has written at least one fic in one canon universe you are familiar with, but you will have at least three fics to choose from in total, due to our eligibility requirements (3 Steve/Tony fics of at least 1k). For example: if you are only familiar with MCU, you are guaranteed at least one 1k MCU fic to remix, but you will be able to choose from at least 3 fics - the additional two may or may not be tagged as MCU.
Do not fret! Again, you may remix any of your remixee’s Steve/Tony stories. If you don’t want to remix that one MCU story, but that leaves you with only non-MCU stories to choose from, you can remix anything back into MCU! That’s the beauty of the remix challenge. For more information, check out our Remix - How To post.
Q: I don’t like any of my remixee’s Stories. Can you rematch me?
No. The challenge is to remix someone else's story and make it your own. There are infinite ways to remix, so rise to the challenge and write the story that you would prefer. If your remixee wrote only stories that ALL hit very common triggers you share, please contact us and we’ll try and find a solution.
Q: I don’t have an AO3 account. Help.
You can request an invite here. If that doesn’t work (AO3 suspended invites for a while due to spam bots or the queue might be too long), shoot an email to cap.im.events@gmail.com or contact a mod through Discord - we’ll hook you up.
Q: What if my Steve/Tony fic/art isn’t on AO3?
Have a masterlist of your Steve/Tony fanworks ready to link in your sign-up, please.
Q: I’m not sure what to put in all these boxes in my AO3 sign-up.
Please check out our AO3 sign-up example page.
Q: I draw from multiple canons when I write Steve/Tony. Is it ok to set my remix in an ambiguous universe?
Yes, that’s perfectly fine! Anything that would normally fall under AO3’s “Avengers - all media” tag is acceptable, such as 616-ified MCU or MCU whose supporting cast draws from Netflixverse.
Our remix challenge has 3 parts to accommodate different levels of participation:
• Remix Exchange (open to writers with sign-up)
• Relay Remix (open to artists and writers with sign-up)
