Tony’s heartsong is like no one else’s. He doesn’t willingly let anybody else hear it anymore because heartsongs are how people take in the world and feel. They’re thought processes composed into sounds, shared with trusted and loved ones.

They call him heartless, and since everyone who’s heard it has pretty much died or are in danger because of him, he supposes they have a point. That’s why he doesn’t share it anymore. Those who have shared songs with him, their songs simply didn’t mix properly, so when played together it’s chaotic. Tony’s song always drowns other people’s songs out. It’s too overbearing, just like him. He always has to be the loudest, or else he’s afraid he has (is) nothing else.

Tony’s song has always been incredibly messy and disjointed, an orchestra of notes that grind together, like gears and screws and jackhammers, creating things that only he can decrypt. His entire life has been an attempt (he succeeds; does he?) at translating what his heart sings into the world, and he never really cared enough what other people hear, as long as he could get this damned, ever-changing (never-stopping why why why) song out of his himself in some way. Discord isn’t supposed to create things, but Tony does it. He creates destruction, and all he can think as people are crying is that he needs to keep playing his music, he can’t stop, not when there’s still so much left he hasn’t done and he doesn’t have time. He’s not a god, not a super soldier, and not human enough to be human.

He tries. And it’s too late when he realizes maybe he should stop playing his songs where other people can hear (they always hear). They get hurt (they always are). It's always his own demons he needs to hunt down, but he can't because he's drowning himself and his demons can swim.

Lately, it’s become more and more destructive and fastandLOUD and, and, damn it, it’s a pace that makes it hard to breathe sometimes, always pushing his thoughts to swirl faster calculate more variables and maybe, maybe if he puts all the attention on himself, maybe if he draws a target on his back, he can protect the people he loves. If he needs to push people away during it, that’s fine, his song has always been too much and not enough, anyway.

“I thought it’d be the National Anthem,” Tony whispers, not wanting to break the blessed silence. He digs his face into Steve’s neck, gasping in relief and bliss. His eyes flutter shut against tears.

Steve laughs, and that’s part of Tony’s song now, too. The silence of Steve’s heartsong is incredible, it makes Tony’s world have more clarity, less noise. Tony can slow down and rest. For once in his life, he doesn’t feel the need to catch up to his song. There’s no need to drown others out in fear of being drowned himself. Tony is his own demons and he has never been a nice person, but Steve makes him forget that and believe in something better.

Steve’s heartsong is selfless, meant for others. Just as well, because he needs people in his life, too. A leader is nothing with those who believe in him, and nobody believes in him quite like Tony does.

Tony sings for Steve. Steve listens for the both of them.

And yet I haven’t found them... .
Hmm.
