Notes: The fic starts right before Avengers 4 and then develops from there. It's kind of a fix-it (if you can call it that, considering the film is not even out yet) for the film, but I also a sort of What If? in Marvel style. I wanted to explore a scenario in which neither Steve or Tony dies in A4 so I imagined how their lives would pan out were they to retire from being superheroes.

Fic Summary: Everyone expects Tony, Steve or both to die in Avengers 4, but what if they don't? What if they get to go home all in one piece? What then?
Tony takes a one year vacation into space looking for answers about his place into the world and his personal identity, as he feels it's something he's not been able to give much thought about since becoming Iron Man in 2008. But when he gets back to Earth, he finds out that a lot can go wrong in twelve months, so once again he's called to be a superhero, although in a very different kind of way, because Nick Fury's plan involves Tony infiltrating the US government in order to gather enough evidence to restore democracy.
Torn between his need to protect people and his wish to reconnect with Steve and maybe build a life with him, he'll soon find out that sometimes the hardest battle is not with aliens or supervillains, but with the enemy within.
