Discussion: Secret Invasion #3

Okay, let's see how this discussion post goes... Time to talk about Secret Invasion #3!

THE BLOCKBUSTER EVENT continues. Its Avenger versus Avenger. Hero versus hero! Norman Osborn versus Captain
Marvel?? The Initiative versus an army of Super-Skrulls? Is Tony Stark really a- -? And who's that guy with an eye patch coming to save the day?? And, oh man, who did he bring with him?

Maybe a few questions to get discussion started? Okay, maybe just one...
1) Do you think Tony is really a Skrull? (Even if you don't, aren't the what ifs fun?!)

Since I don't know what I'm really doing, any ideas on handling discussion posts are welcome here. And if anyone else wants to talk about another issue - post an entry!

Do you think Tony is really a Skrull?

No, unfortunately. The only real question is whether Spider Woman thinks he is a Skrull because he was supposed to have been replaced but wasn't, or if she's just fucking with his head, or if she's not a Skrull herself at all and is checking to make sure Stark isn't.

I think there's exactly zero chance that Tony's a Skrull. Seriously, I will eat my Wolverine #1 if he's a Skrull. Marvel just has too much invested in the character as is, to Skrull him up. I'm entertaining three possibilities:

1. Jessica has taken out and replaced the Skrull Queen and is testing Tony.

2. Tony was supposed to be replaced by a Skrull who was tasked with centralizing the hero community, in order to make it more vulnerable to internal attack.

3. Giant mindfuck by the Skrull Queen, who's hoping to throw Tony off his game long enough for her to capture him.

I'll say one thing about Secret Invasion 3, Yu's pencils are insanely good, particularly in comparison to his near unreadable work on New Avengers. That was one smoking hot Spider-Woman.

Aside from the obvious out of story reasons for Tony not being a Skrull, there's a good in story reason that works for a number of A list heroes: if they could replace Tony, why bother with all these shenanigans in the first place? Dude can control technology with his mind - all they need do is have Skrull Tony turn everything off.

I'm in the "she's just messing with him camp." But it's still a damn effective one---Registration, the Initiative, everything Tony has fought for has been nothing more than part of an elaborate scheme to take over Earth. He's lost Steve for nothing. I can see much more self-hatred and anger when all of this is over.

Forgot how much of a mind-screw American comics could be. I guess by now I have to admit Tony being a Skrull is unlikely. Too much invested in the character, as people have said. It's a too obvious explanation for everything that's happened, and I don't think they're about to retcon him just yet.

Someone once mentioned that Spider-Queen was possibly trying to temporarily get Tony out of the picture so that he might be execution publicly later on. He IS by now an important world leader, right?

But even if he ISN'T a Skrull, it's a serious kick in the gonads that he was pivotal in the downfall of mankind. (wince) Why bother replacing him when he's already done all that shit. Unless he was brainwashed (AGAIN).

I still stand by the idea that the impostors will be the Skrulls downfall. They are made too perfectly. If they really believe themselves to be the real deal, why would they help the Skrulls? Of course that statement has all sort of faults to it, but still. I bet all the people from that spacecraft are sleeper Skrulls, they just don't know it yet. They were made for an earlier stage of the invasion, but weren't put into play soon enough and were just left hanging.

Which is WHY I'm waiting for some fandom angst. If that Captain America wanders off thinking he's the REAL Cap, a fake or not it would cause a stir.

That would make for some painful stories, but possibly good, if done right.

Oh man, think of it from a shippy perspective. Skrull!Cap is in love with Tony. Tony's all "No! Steve was my one true love. But you're a lot like Steve... *wavers*"

Angst all around.

Tony: "No! Steve was my one true love. But you're a lot like Steve... And you somehow remember that moment we had together after the battle with XXX that one time... and what happened after."

Not really, but still.

What would also be weird, is if Skrull!Cap and a Skrull!Tony met, after one or both of them are coming to terms with their Skrullness. Imagine the support needed to get through something like that?

I'll be delighted if even one sleeper Skrull makes it through SI to have to deal with that shit, because yeah, that's quite a load to carry by oneself.

Nah

I don't really think so, if only it doesn't make all that much sense with Extremis and Execute Program trades. Since he had that chip planted in his head by Yensin, if he was a skrull, well, the kid wouldn't have been able to control him right? Since it was put there before there was ever an Iron Man. That and when Stark stopped his heart and was technically dead, he should have reverted back to being a skrull. Which means they would have had to replace him after Execute program, but during Civil War and on, he's always had Extremis.

I really hope Tony -in the comic- is smart enough to realize this....but they'll probably try to milk it for all it's worth and have him angst for a couple of issues... meh...

I definitely don't think he's a Skrull, for various reasons including making a character who currently has, what, three or four of his own books a Skrull would seriously mess things up, and the fact he's probably bringing in new readers because of the film's success.

Someone mentioned somewhere the idea that Skrull!Queen fell for him and wants him to think he's her lover, which I found unlikely but a really, really interesting idea. Barring that, I think it would be cool if he was supposed to be replaced and managed to take out the skrull-double without anyone knowing ^.^

Haha, totally. I hope there's fic for it, eventually.

The Civil War was kinda orchestrated...I mean, there were various forces behind the Registration Act and it was pretty obvious that there'd be heroes that would totally not be for it. Plus, it wouldn't be hard to aggravate the situation. Hell, look at that scene where Tony approaches Steve about Happy's death and they're having a civil conversation and then, boom, it's interrupted. If there was some sort of Skrull conspiracy, there could have been Skrulls keeping them from coming to any kind of understanding.

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I mean, despite the fact almost every regular person in the Marvel universe is a complete idiot, I'd prefer to think that enough of them aren't that foolish. Plus, logically speaking, if the Skrulls have been planning the invasion for as long as they have been, it makes more sense, logically, that they'd have a hand in all of this.

Well, it might not be all Tony's fault. Jarvis and Pym were Skrulls, after all, so they could have offered "suggestions" that lead Tony in certain directions.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
There's a problem with Skrulling up Civil War though. It's been one of the most popular crossovers Marvel has had. I mean, yeah, you see a lot of hate online, but it sold</I. Hell, it's still selling.

what if tony's been a sleeper skrull so long he IS the tony we know o_0 ?

:o :o :o

seriously though, what's the point of a sleeper skrull? like they won't die for the cause anyway? what's the point of a sleeper agent. She's just fucking with his mind.
