GENERAL GUIDELINES

  • Please read through the General Event Policies before joining any Remix challenge.

  • This event is run by the cap-ironman community and it’s a Steve/Tony fest, so we’re looking for art and fic with a focus on the relationship between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in any context and in any setting or continuity you can think of.

  • Participants in the Exchange and Relay challenges must be 18 or older.

  • Our remix challenges are not gift exchanges: all your remix works are new and your own, and are not intended to cater to the creator of the original work.

That said, please bear in mind that the author of the original work will have their name attached to yours, and your work will be directly affiliated with theirs. Do not use your remix to bash the original work, its content, or the creator. The challenge is creativity — rise to it!

  • Announcements for all Remix Event challenges will be posted on Dreamwidth, LiveJournal, Tumblr, and Twitter. Please keep an eye out on our usual channels for when sign-ups are opened!

HOW TO REMIX

If this is your first remix challenge, or you'd like a refresher on how a remix challenge works, we encourage you to read through our new How to Remix guide! The post provides an overview of what a remix is, ideas on how to approach your remix, and a list of select existing remixes from the Steve/Tony fandom to get a wider understanding of what sort of remixes are possible.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is a Remix?
A remix is a re-imagining of a fanwork that was made by another participant. The idea is to keep the basic plot, cast, and pairings of the original, but change other elements to recreate it as your own, new, stand-alone piece. Have you ever read a story and thought, "If I'd written this, I would have done it differently?" That is what remixing is all about.

The best-known (and first) remix challenge around is Remix Redux, a multi-fandom remix challenge that has been running for a few years now at remixers_lounge.

Q: I'm having trouble thinking of ways to remix.
If you're stuck on your idea, check out the How to Remix guide for different ways you can approach your remix.

Q: I'm worried about AO3 matching. How will you make sure I get something I can work with?
The AO3 matching system means you're guaranteed to match with someone who has written at least one fic in one canon universe you are familiar with, but you will have at least three fics to choose from in total, due to our eligibility requirements (3 Steve/Tony fics of at least 1,000 words). For example: if you are only familiar with MCU, you are guaranteed at least one 1k MCU fic to remix, but you will be able to choose from at least 3 fics — the additional two may or may not be tagged as MCU.

Do not fret! Again, you may remix any of your remixee's Steve/Tony stories. If you don't want to remix that one MCU story, but that leaves you with only non-MCU stories to choose from, you can remix anything back into MCU! That's the beauty of the remix challenge.

If you're still having trouble with your remix, please check out our How to Remix page for more tips and advice.

Q: I don't like any of my remixee's stories. Can you rematch me?
No. The challenge is to remix someone else's story and make it your own. There are infinite ways to remix, so rise to the challenge and write the story that you would prefer. If your remixee wrote only stories that all hit very common triggers you share, please contact us and we'll try and find a solution.

Q: Can I still join the Remix Relay as an artist even if I'm not placed in the Art/Fic Chain?
Yes! Remix Relay is open to artists and writers and both art and writing is acceptable in all regular Remix chains. The Art/Fic Chain requires an alternating art, fic, art, fic, etc… sequence, but in our regular chains there can be any sequence of remixing fic to fic, art to art, fic to art, or art to fic in the chain. If you are participating in the regular remix chain, you do not have to designate yourself as an artist or writer at sign-ups and can choose either medium when it's your turn.

Q: I want to participate in the Remix Exchange or Madness but I don't have an AO3 account.
You can request an AO3 invitation here. The queue sometimes is longer than our sign-up period, so if you think you might want to participate and need an account, request an invitation now! If you can't get an AO3 account in time, let us know at cap.im.events@gmail.com and we might be able to get you an invitation.

Q: Do I need an AO3 account to join the Remix Relay?
Yes. While sign-ups are done via email, you are required to provide your AO3 username and will be required to post your remix work on AO3. If you do not have an account, please request an invite here as soon as possible, so you don't miss the opportunity to join the Remix Relay.

Q: What if my Steve/Tony fanwork isn't on AO3?
Please have a masterlist of your Steve/Tony fanworks ready to link in your sign-up.

Q: I have an eligible work but it's posted anonymously or is currently unrevealed. Does it still qualify?
All eligible works must be clearly associated with the creator, therefore anonymous works do not count. However, if the work will be revealed by the event sign-up deadline (January 7th for Remix Exchange), then it will qualify.

Q: I defaulted on another event and am not eligible to participate in this year's Remix Exchange. Can I still participate in the Remix Relay and Remix Madness?
Yes. We have changed the eligibility for Remix Relay so that anybody can join regardless of their banned status. However, if you have repeatedly defaulted on or dropped out of Remix Relay in the past, we may ask you to consider carefully if you'd be able to participate and adhere to the Relay schedule.

Remix Madness is open to any participant, but you are required to sign up in the collection to either submit your works to be remixed or to create a remix yourself.

Q: I draw from multiple canons when I write Steve/Tony. Is it okay to set my remix in an ambiguous universe?
Yes, that's perfectly fine! Anything that would normally fall under AO3's “Avengers - All Media” tag is acceptable, such as 616-ified MCU or MCU whose supporting cast draws from Netflix-verse. However for Remix Exchange sign-ups, only works not set in ambiguous universes or crossover/fusion settings will count towards your eligibility requirement.

Q: I'm not sure if my art is considered a manip or not. What is considered a manip?
A manip is an existing image not originally drawn by you (a movie screenshot or a comic scan, for example) that has been digitally modified. It is okay to use a photo or other piece of art as a reference or for artistic purposes (say, to create a background), but the main subject of your art must be drawn (or painted, or otherwise created) entirely by you.

Q: Do all Remix participants have to be 18 or older to join?
This year we are requiring that all Remix participants are 18 or older to join the Remix Exchange and Remix Relay. There is no age requirement for Remix Madness.

Q. What happens if I don't make the Remix Exchange deadline?
If you don't post a work by the event's deadline, you won't receive a ban; the mods will assume that you did not complete the work and will automatically look for a pinch-hitter. If you feel you cannot make the deadline, we ask that you drop out and send the mods an email sooner than later so they have more time to look for a pinch-hitter.

However, if you have received an extension and do not have a completed work by your extension date, that will be considered defaulting after the deadline and you will receive a yearlong ban and will be ineligible to participate in all exchange and collaborative events.

Q: Is there an event tag I can follow on Tumblr?
All Remix-related posts (for all three challenges) will be tagged with #capimremix.

If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact the mods at cap.im.events@gmail.com!
