| January 8 | Assignments sent out |
| February 15 | Finished Remix Exchange assignments are due |

HOW CAN I JOIN?
To participate in the exchange, you must have an Archive of Our Own account and at least 3 eligible fics, each with a minimum of 1000 words.
Eligible fics must be
- Focused on Steve and Tony's relationship
- Complete and stand-alone works
- Publicly posted (if not on AO3, accessible elsewhere)
Eligible fics must not be
- Set solely in an ambiguous Marvel universe
- Crossovers or fusions, even across Marvel universes
- Co-written with anyone
- A previously written remix
You'll have the option of designating one "safe story" that cannot be remixed. This story does not count towards your eligibility.
Eligible fic requirements are only minimum sign-up requirements. To provide remixers with more options, they are allowed to remix any of your fics, including stories under 1000 words, crossovers, works set in ambiguous universes, and so on.
However, remixers cannot remix: non-Steve/Tony works, works in progress, collaborated works, previously remixed works, or a "safe story."
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Sign up for the Remix Exchange here.
Remember, sign-ups close on Jan 4th 2020.You must be 18 or older to participate in this challenge.
REQUESTS
In the "Request" section, you must select at least one Fandom that corresponds with an eligible fic. You may tag as many Fandoms (Marvel universes available in the tag set) as you'd like, so as long as they correspond with your eligible fics.
Example 1: You have 3 eligible fics that all take place in the MCU. You should select the 'Marvel Cinematic Universe' Fandom tag only.Matching is based on the following Fandoms:
Example 2: You have 5 eligible fics, each belonging to a different Fandom. You must select at least 3 of the Fandom tags that your fics belong to, but can select up to all 5 corresponding tags and make it easier to match you.
Example 3: You have numerous eligible fics across multiple Fandoms. You have at least 3 Avengers Assemble fics that are eligible for the Exchange; you may, if you wish, only select the 'Avengers Assemble' Fandom tag (but are welcome to tag as many eligible Fandoms as you'd like).
- Marvel Cinematic Universe
- Marvel 616
- Marvel Ultimates
- Marvel Adventures Comics
- Avengers Academy (Game)
- Avengers Assemble (Cartoon)
- Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (Cartoon)
- Iron Man Noir
- Marvel 1872
After matches are made, remixers are allowed to choose any of your stories to remix, whether or not it's been tagged or untagged — as long as it’s not your safe story or another ineligible fic.
Ineligible stories are:
- Non-Steve/Tony works
- Works in progress
- Collaborated (co-written) works
- Previously remixed works,
- Your "safe story"
LINK TO FANWORKS
In the "Link" section, you need to provide a link to all your Steve/Tony fic — AO3, Livejournal, Dreamwidth or another blog, FFnet — and it must be easily accessible (not locked).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Please list all of the fanworks that are not eligible to be remixed. This includes: your safe story, works in progress, previous remixes, and co-written works. Please list each work individually.
If you would like to have your work remixed into a language other than English, please list all languages that you would be happy to receive a remix in (note that we cannot guarantee that you will receive a remix in any of your listed languages).
OFFER
In the "Offer" section, you should tag canons you are familiar with or would be comfortable remixing in.
Please also list any languages other than English that you would be happy to write a remix in. Note that this is completely optional, and we cannot guarantee that you will have the opportunity to create a remix in a different language.
You can find an example sign-up here.
You will receive your assignment no later than January 8. You must keep your assignment a secret until reveals, or risk being disqualified from the challenge.
I HAVE MY ASSIGNMENT! NOW WHAT?
To fulfill your assignment, pick one of your match's stories to remix. You may choose a story of any canon and word length (crossovers included).
You cannot remix any of the following:
- Your match's safe story
- A WIP
- A previously written remix
- A collaboration (co-created works)
- A story that is not focused on Steve Rogers & Tony Stark
All remixes must be based on one of your match’s stories and cannot:
- Change the basic plot
- Change the pairings (S/T and background)
If this is your first time joining a remix event, or you just wanted to refresh your memory on how it works, please take a look at our How To Remix Guide for basics, tips, and more!
Your remix must be a minimum of 1000 words. You may write as much as you want, or even write more than one story!
All works must be focused on Steve and Tony's relationship, whether they're "gen" or "shippy." If there is romance, then the focus should be on Steve and Tony's relationship and Steve/Tony should be "endgame" in some way if other background relationships are included.
This is not a gift exchange in the way that the Holiday Exchange is — you are creating a story that is new and your own, rather than catering to the tastes of your match. That said, bear in mind that the author of the original work will have their name attached to yours and your work will be directly connected to theirs. Do not use your remix to bash the original work or attack the creator. Do not make fun of their stories, kinks, side pairings, etc, in namespace. The challenge is creativity — rise to it!
To fulfill your assignment, upload your story to the 2020 Captain America/Iron Man Remix Exchange collection by February 15th. Your submission will automatically appear as an anonymous “Mystery Gift” for the remixee.
Please link to the original story as a related work when posting on AO3, under Associations > "This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work." Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found here.
For further help using AO3, please refer to our AO3 Guide for guidelines on how to fulfill an assignment, upload your work to a collection, and more.
Do not upload incomplete stories. The mods will check all stories on the deadline, and incomplete stories will be rejected and counted as post-deadline default.
WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE THE DEADLINE?
If you realize at any time that you won’t be able to finish your story, please hit the “Default” button on your assignment as soon as you know. You can find your assignments under archiveofourown.org/users/YOURUSERNAME/assignments
Once you've defaulted, the mods will look for pinch-hitter to stand in for you. You will not be penalized for dropping out before the deadline. Dropping out after the deadline will result in a ban. More information on what that entails can be found here.
You can ask for an extension by emailing the mods at cap.im.events@gmail.com before the deadline. You must provide a draft of your work in progress when requesting an extension to be granted one.
PINCH-HITTING
If an author has to drop out, we will need pinch-hitters to step in and fulfill their assignment! Also, in the event that we have issues matching someone, that assignment will go out as a pinch-hit right away. If you don’t want to sign up for the challenge, but still want to participate, or if you’re willing to write more than one story, please consider signing up as a pinch-hitter. You can contact us at cap.im.events@gmail.com with the subject “2020 Remix Exchange Pinch-hitter”.
POSTING AND REVEALS
Stories from all our remix challenges will be revealed from 17th February onward. You can see all the revealed works in the 2020 Captain America/Iron Man Remix Exchange collection and on our usual channels; keep an eye out on our Remix tags on Dreamwidth, LiveJournal, and Tumblr.
Remember to thank your remixer when stories go up. Remixees know the original best and will best appreciate the remix. Most writers are eager to hear what their remixee thinks of the story, and courtesy demands that you acknowledge when someone engages with your work! Be gracious.
Stories will remain anonymous until at least two days after the last fics are revealed. Remember to maintain your anonymity until then.
Do not post your story anywhere else until the end of the fest. Do feel free to link and plug all stories/recs anywhere you see fit! After authors have been revealed, you are welcome to post your fic anywhere.
If you have any additional questions about the Exchange or need assistance with signing up, please refer to the Remix FAQ, comment below, or contact the mods at cap.im.events@gmail.com!

eligibility/fandoms
But, I'm not sure I understand the fandom request aspect properly, because the distribution of my eligible fics doesn't match any one of the scenarios given as examples.
In my case, I'm about minimum on the requirements, but I do have three fics focused on Steve and Tony (two ship and one gen), that each take place within a specific universe - two MCU and one 616.
So in this case, would I have the option of requesting both OR requesting just one, my choice of either, of those?
And the "request" is for being matched with someone who... is offering to remix for at least one of the universes where I have eligible fics?
Where then my "offer" is asking to be matched with someone who has at least one eligible fic in that universe that I could choose to remix for?
Hopefully asking this now means that once sign-ups open, I can send my info correctly without having to ask more questions while mods are dealing with actually receiving the sign-ups! :D
Thank you very much for the help!
Re: eligibility/fandoms
In this exchange, you "request" to have one of at least three fics remixed. You "offer" to remix someone else's fic. And yes, you are matched by universe tags exactly as you've said.
Since you only have three eligible fics (platonic/gen/pre-slash is fine, so don't worry about that!), you have to use those to sign up with. This means that you have to tag all the applicable fandoms of your three fics in your request. In this case, you would select both "MCU" and "616" in your request.
Please note that your remixer is able to select a different fic than what you signed up with, unless it's ineligible or is listed as your safe story. We have the sign-up requirements in place so that we can guarantee a match on at least one universe, and so that a remixer has at least 1000 words of story to work with.
Let us know if you have any further questions!
Re: eligibility/fandoms
And I will think about if I want a "safe" story beyond my ineligible-for-remix WIP, but I understand that they can choose to remix fics other than the ones I'm signing up with. I think I understand the rules, generally - it was just the "request" tagging I wasn't really sure about.
So yay, unless something crazy happens in the next couple weeks before signups, I'm gonna do this thing! I'm really excited!
