Happy Birthday - fic

It was the fourth of July and nothing was happening.

Absolutely nothing.

Everyone was busy and Steve supposed he should have reminded them but he hadn't wanted any fuss.

Maybe Tony would remember and give him birthday sex tonight at the fireworks show... he would even be willing to do it in public- it was a special occasion after all.

He was turning forty.

God he felt ancient... a combination of his -age- versus the amount of time he'd lived if you counted his iced years.

The childish part of him wanted balloons and cake and the people he loved together again.

He missed the mansion.

He missed the  Avengers.

The phone shrilled and he walked over to answer it.

" CAP, we need you help!" Carol's voice seemed strained and there were explosions going on in the background.

"What is the situation and why did you phone, this is what the Avengers communicators are for." Steve asked moving about his apartment gathering his equipment and undressing as efficiently as possible witha phone tucked under his ear, wishing he'd paid attention when Tony showed him how to put it on speaker.

"I broke the communicator... um IN BATTLE- yeah." Carol muttered into the phone.

" Sit. Rep?" he asked calmly.

"Iron Man is in transit but he was tied up in his experiments and has to safely shut them down before he can come and lend us a hand. Antman is doing what he can for surveillance with his ants... Jan is coming as soon as she can make her excuses. Spiderman has just shown up on the scene bringing Luke and Danny. I have no idea whether the kiddy Avenger team will be making an appearance but there are Doombots everywhere." Carol's words were frequently interrupted by blasts.

" Dooooooooooooooooooooom" was all he heard out of the phone before a sharp dial tone.

Grabbing his shield Steve ran for the door and took his bike downtown.

It was weird.

he hadn't thought this was what he wanted as he threw his shield at a Doombot, but-

" Bucky back up Patriot on the east side!" He yelled out to his old partner who gave him a playful gesture before bounding to the young Avenger.

"Cassie Remember the bigger they are the harder they fall. Listen to Jan she knows what she's talking about."

He heard Luke, Peter and Danny playfully mocking the Doombots.
"Hey, look they're just as effective as the real thing."
"You mean defective."
"I think the only defective thing is your sense of humour Pete. Okay and Maybe the bot over by Macy's admiring his reflection."
"Did it just pirouette?"
"Man, he really is making them more and more like himself all the time."

Cap smiled and caught his Shield before heading over to Iron Man.

" Catch me!" and he leaped off the building he was working from.

"You do this to torture me don't you Steve." Tony's metallic voice met his.

"Whatever do you mean?" He asked coyly pressing himself into Ironman's side as they pulled a hug and fly.

"Don't think I forgot about your birthday, we had a surprise party all set-up for this evening." Tony murmured.

" Wait, you mean this isn't it? Because I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than to defend freedom alongside my best friends." He laughed before stopping their conversation short to tell Kate to focus or the bots in the distance and let Ronin handle the bots in closer proximity.

"I say we ditch them when we get back and take the cake." Steve told Tony as the wind whipped across his face.

" What for?" Tony asked.

" you'll see." Steve smiled as he jumped from Tony's arms to a clothesline and slid to the street taking out five bots as he came down.

The first fireworks began to light up the sky as small exploding doombots filled the streets.

Carol had joined in Spidey's jokes and Steve looked up at the red, white and blue above him and knew that no matter how old he got as long as he had his Avengers he would remain young at heart.

LOL. As interesting as Bucky/Steve/Tony could be...maybe this time Bucky went off to "celebrate" with Sam. Or the Young Avengers, as they apparently all have a giant-size crush on him. :)

Doom...Doom...that reminds me...did you check out the prompt-a-thon at gestalt1´s lj?
She writes a superb Doom, all perfect with Doom-Speak and everything.
(Ok, she´s in Sardinia for about a week or so, but the prompt-thing was really fun^^
Contains Steve/Tony, Andre, Armor...Ultron and a lot of Tony/Rhodey...and even Harry Lockhart....yeah, we went a little overboard there)

This was fun! Of course Doombots would attack on Steve's birthday. *g* One of the downsides of sharing it with a national holiday! Talk about a target. :-D

I was utterly and totally certain that this was an excuse to get Steve to his surprise party. Color me surprised when he showed up to an actual battle! *laughs*

And this is a tiny quibble I've been obsessing about forever and trying to get over, but it's driving me crazy and I have to mention it, because it's really affecting my enjoyment of your stories. So... It's spelled/written "Iron Man". Not "Ironman". Like I said, a tiny quibble, but it's driving me nuts. *sheepish*
