Cap_Ironman Weekly News, Week Ending 26 June 2011
Hello and welcome to the weekly
cap_ironman/
cap_ironman newsletter.
In comics this week, you can find Cap over in issue four of Van Lente's film tie-in Captain America: First Vengeance and in the first issue of Paul Jenkins' WWII adventure All-Winners' Squad: Band of Heroes (I'm not sure I've forgiven Jankins for "Fallen Sun" yet, but maybe this will be good, art looks nice, anyway). Meanwhile, Tony appears to be arguing with himself in Iron Age #1
With less than four weeks to go to the Cap movie (25 days actually, but who's counting?), Marvel publicity is really stepping up. I'm not going to start linking to cast interviews because basically if you throw a rock, you'll hit four of them. However, if you haven't already done so, all y'all should check out the new trailer (posted to the comm by
manic_intent here.)
If you're starting to get confused by how all the Marvel Universe films fit together, Newsarama has put together a list of all the connections between Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and Thor, with speculation about Captain America: The First Avenger. CBR has a discussion of the marketing approach taken by the Cap film (seems boil down to "leave them wanting more").
Titan books is releasing the autobiography of Cap co-creator Joe Simon. Check out IGN for an excerpt about his first meeting with Jack Kirby.
In sadder news, Marvel legend artist Gene Colan (who was my absolute favourite early Cap artist) died last week. He worked right up to the end, and I think we'll all miss him. Marvel has a nice write up on him here.
Not even bothering to cut the round up this week. I guess everyone's busywriting Charles/Erik finishing their big bang drafts.
saphirerose1986 recorded a podfic of
penumbren's story Indellible, and
penumbren turned it into a podbook.
Finally, if you're a new or recent member, hello and welcome! Our rules are here, and in the profile; this includes our warnings policy, so please read. If you're interested in the ship, you may want to read the Ship Manifesto, and consult the list of Slashy Moments (Now at one hundred and fifty moments). If you're planning to write for the comm, there are some tips on writing the pairing here, and the Avengers in general here; if you're having trouble finding a beta, or would like to offer your services as a beta, our beta list is here. If you're looking for the comm archive, it's Tales of Suspense, and it's automated - you can create an account and upload your fic. If you're looking for a particular story, why not try
cap_im_finders? If you have any questions, you can comment here or PM a mod, that's me,
garrideb and
valtyr.
And feel free to post on-topic or off-topic stuff in the comments to this post! Just keep it reasonably safe for work, please.

What state of creating are you all in? Right now I'm in the state "Why do I write such thing I should jump off a roof" and Fake zenism "Will I ever be able to edit it right?"
My biggest problem is how to convey my setting as a flavourful character. What is the biggest obstacle in your work?

Still battling B-plot, with occasional bouts of "WTF was I thinking, deletedeletedelete". My worst problem is all the Charles/Erik that seems to be littering the internet these days. So much fic, so little time! D:

For the setting stuff, I guess I'd advise looking at works that you think have done it well, and analysing how they do it.
I'm trying to get my plot together and coherent; I need all the things to happen in the right order, and sufficient spread out that there aren't huge dull chunks, and for certain things to happen near/just after other things. I have one event I'd like to happen sooner for one plot thread, but later for another plot thread! NOT HELPING! :D

Would adding time travel help the plot?

writing Charles/Erikfinishing their big bang drafts.(GASP) Who told you?! (kicks fic under the bed) ¬.¬
Taking a quick glance at Iron Age, it looks like Marvel is giving us an easy canon basis for some hot Tony on Tony action. Good to see they know their audience.
For the Strings Theory connecting Cap, Thor and Tony, I did not notice some of these things in the movies! Glad I didn't skip the article as known intel. Now I want to rewatch the movies again.
Aaaaand referencing the differences between Cap & Green Lantern in promotion, I think the article starts with one major flaw: Green Lantern looks to be nothing at all like Cap, either in flow, aesthetics or eventual emotional payout. Of course their promo schemes were different! It's apples and oranges. (Of course, this is going by only the Cap trailers, so I can only pray I'm not wrong.)
I may have been dragged to see GL this weekend. Still nursing the scars.

Well, Fraction came pretty close to actually doing that in The Order. I think they've known for a while now.
I think the only thing I didn't notice was the maps. I'm such a huge nerd. And I just watched The Incredible Hulk last week, so it's fresh in my mind.
I haven't seen GL and you can't make me go, but if all one has is explosions, I guess one tries to sell the explosions.

NOOOOOOOOOO~
Think of Hank's feet. Hank's Feet. Hank's feet... were kind of weirdly adorably, akshully. o.O

It didn't even really have explosions! Massive CGI use, and nothing that really made you go, "BAM, wow!" And it's hard to promote an emotional arc you don't have. (sigh) GL drives me up the wall. It could have been good, but the directing choices were all wrong. I didn't even like half of the camera angles!

And he ACED them. (Link contains free link to listen to the story as well as a transcript.)

Re: Naming No Names
"Bill, I'm brokering a peace deal in the Mideast! Go watch your ponies with Al!"
Irreplacable mental image: Al Gore and Bill Clinton watching MLP in their jammies on the couch. And splitting a bowl of popcorn.
