Fanfic- PG-13- The Question- for Seanchai

Title: The Question
Authors: axolotl_lan and pandanoai
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: Marvel’s
Summary: An unordinary day even for them…
Notes: For seanchai on her birthday ^__^ -- Hope you enjoy our randomness!

It had been a slow day and Steve Rogers had spent the earlier part of it reminiscing over old photo albums. It was strange coming back to life. It was always strange. He knew some friends and fellow heroes had done it before him and managed. But he felt disconnected, numb and cold. Like the first time.

Most of the other heroes who'd returned had been so happy, and especially happy to see him.

It was just different. This was his flat, all of his things were here, but it didn't feel like home anymore and he couldn't remember a time when it had.

He was thankful for Hercules'… well, Herculean feat in wrestling the Skrull gods into submission and Snowbird for offering them mercy if they'd return to life the heroes whose faces and lives had been stolen by their people in their name.
There were a great number of mutants, humans and others whose appearances had been stolen by the Skrull and apparently their gods interpreted them all as heroes or warriors in their own right.

Seeing Alpha Flight back was nice, it'd definitely been one of the better times since he’d returned....
The best would have been the first day, walking up with Scott to the base of Stark Tower and seeing Cassie and her friends and all of the Avengers who'd fought the invasion.

To see all of the heroes standing united once more after the way he'd gone out made him feel something pure and the look of unfiltered joy on Tony's face gave him this happy tingle.

Things would be alright.

Of course now he'd been back a month and that had been the first and last time he'd seen Tony. He'd been trying to contact him; he knew there was a lot of paper shuffling and such going on. Especially due to the returned citizens, a number of which had been vocal supporters of registration, that were now rescinding those statements as they had been made by imposters.

People were willing to trust their heroes again, which seemed ironic after being at 'war' with shape shifting aliens. Then again who was he to knock public opinion?

He looked at a picture of just him and Tony smiling at each other; it was candid and had been taken by Peter as he hung from the ceiling. Cap really liked it though; there was something intimate about the position and the smile on Tony's face. He missed that. Cap missed him. He knew that Tony was busy, but he’d even emailed him. E-mailed him!  He didn't see why Tony couldn't even return his e-mails- the man was a computer for crying out loud…

A blaring noise alerted him to an Avengers all-call. Well, a call of all who felt like coming, their membership was booming what with all the newly alive members. Plus finding out that Dr. Strange had been a Skrull and Wanda had been setup and not actually as crazy as she seemed, made things all the more complicated. Her magic had apparently decided the world was a lost cause after her first attempt to stop the invasion by making everything she viewed “all better.” They should've questioned Strange more, talked things out with Wanda but it just had seemed to make sense. And then it was just so difficult to know who to trust.

Funny thing about trust- You've got to give it to get it.
And of course to be able to give it you need to be able to find the damn person and talk with them.
Maybe Iron Man would be free from business meetings long enough to save the world for a bit.
And then maybe Steve could do what he’d been planning to do for weeks.

Cap surveyed the battlefield for a final time. The dust and debris was settling and he could actually see further then five inches in front of his face. The glint of the sun off a certain type of metal made him squint ever so slightly.
He didn’t think he’d miss such an odd little thing like that.
The gentle purr of perfect mechanical parts stepped forward fully out of the surrounding rubble.

Another successful mission.

One could never truly get used to such a thing as dodging Doom-bots or blowing up alien war crafts but when the team worked together this perfectly it was difficult not to admire the flow the battles held. How many times had they done this before? How many times would they do it again?

As Tony came closer, just feet away now, he held out his hand. Cap took it without hesitation. Just like how things used to be.
Thoughts of another time, a time when everything hurt and there was no poetry to the team because there was no team, surfaced suddenly in Steve's brain.
Betrayal is such a big word. Perhaps the largest word that Steve has ever seen. Especially when it was in the hands of Tony Stark.

He can remember the pain of his betrayal, so many years ago when Steve had been wearing another ideal's clothes. He didn't have the right to think that he'd come first over Tony Stark's principles. They were both so stubborn. It had just been that their vision of what was right had usually been the same. The only other jarring example being what had divided the entire superhero community. But that was then…
And now everything was different. The team was alive again and Tony was…
As the feeling of flight distracted Steve from his thoughts he looked over at the man who was allowing them both to fly. Tony Stark was his best friend. And he remembered hating him. It couldn't have been Tony that Steve truly hated. That couldn't really have been possible. It must have been that word. That word that stretched on for miles with no end in sight.

Steve realized that there was always something missing from his relationship with Tony. And that was it. The relationship. The actual act of being a couple, the ability to feel on a level so deep. Steve suddenly realized that they'd go through tough times, harsh times, painful times, but they'd be able to do it if they were together.

That's what had been missing all this time and Steve was finally certain, it was just a perfect gut feeling, that Tony knew this already. That he was someone who understood, that he could share himself in the way he'd always wanted to and reconnect with the world through him. He wasn't going to be alone anymore.
Stark Tower rapidly came into view and Tony picked one of its many balconies to touch down on.
"You've been really quiet." Tony stated, removing the face plate of his helmet.

Steve smiled at him. "No more than you."
Tony held a puzzled look on his face. "Is there anything on your mind? I know there’s a lot of things we need to cover and I understand... I mean don't be shy because you think you'll lose your ride home or something." Tony answered Steve with a self-deprecating smile.
“Maybe I do have something to say, and really since when have I ever been shy with you Stark." Steve watched Tony stiffen as if for a blow. When it never came he opened his mouth silently as if to ask where it was, the yelling, the hurt. Steve refused to let this stop him. He would take away Tony's armor piece by piece if he had to.

"I've known you most of my adult life. Through the good and the bad. I've thought it over, I've thought us over. Honestly, if we don't get our act together the Avengers will never manage to continue functioning as well as they have. At the moment everyone is just happy to be alive and together but if we let this turn back into the mess it did, if we can't trust each other and be open it'll never work. We'll never work. I need to know now that you can do this... that you’ll try."
Steve punctuated his words by reaching out and clutching Tony's shoulder.
Tony met his gaze for a faction of a second and then his eyes fell like they’d never rise again. "I... for you Cap… Steve I'd try anything please just give me a chance." Tony said with his head bowed.

"In that case- Will you marry me?" Steve asked as casually as possible.

"Wait, What?!" Tony looked shocked and confused but Steve noted he didn't seem at all upset (which was good). He wasn't sure what sort of sign the armor flying apart and away was though- he hoped it was good.

“Will. You. Tony Stark, marry me?" Steve asked again, going down on one knee.

"We've never even had sex!" Tony sputtered, pulling Steve up from the ground and searching the surrounding area for interlopers. Only the birds had seen.

“I’d like to think our relationship has more depth than that.” Steve smiled, pulling Tony closer. “Anyways, I have it on good authority you're quite the pro and I learned under the wing of Nick Fury, peak of human perfection, there is nothing I can't do in bed as good if not better than anyone else." Steve barely managed to keep his blush from reaching his cheeks the lowered cowl thankfully covering his neck.

“You’re serious." Tony said.
“Serious.” Steve answered, pulling a small slightly battle worn velvet box.
Tony’s eyes flickered toward the platinum band inside.
“Serious.”

Steve leaned forward and pressed his lips to Tony's trying to show exactly what he meant.

When they separated it was like a dam had opened and Tony was bawling on the balcony. It hurt a lot. They'd hurt each other so much without even realizing why.

They couldn't change the past but the future had just opened wide. As Tony took the box from his hands and slipped the ring onto his finger he knew they'd be able to make it together. It was a perfect fit. Steve felt the cold begin to melt away.

“So about that ride... Could we skip it, order some Chinese food and have a night in?" Steve asked, wrapping his arms around Tony and never wanting to let him go.

Tony finally smiled. "Oh thank god… I almost thought you were going to go into some 1940's ideal about how we'd have to wait until after the ceremony because if that was the case I'd need to call back the armor and get us to Vegas." Tony sunk happily into Steve's arms.

“Well you see in the 1940's - we lied. Though you'd probably be right about the sex on the alter being a bad idea, the priest might not like that." Steve held Tony tight as he walked through the balcony doors into the adjoining room.

Tony shrugged “I don’t know. It is Vegas…" Tony said grinning impishly at him.

They kissed.

Luckily for them it didn't end there.

He wasn't sure what sort of sign the armor flying apart and away was though- he hoped it was good.
I just imagined that with a loud *clank* and Tony looking shocked, mouth gaping open

if that was the case I'd need to call back the armor and get us to Vegas

Of course there is fic from her already, it is seanchai's b-day and I am a wicked slave driver muahahaha.

First I thought that he would be likes Steve´s dad....or maybe walk one of them to the altar, then excuse himself because there´s someting in his eye and then sit down next to Dum Dum and cry that his "baby" has grown up
or he simply sits there with a cigar, all confident and saying "That´s my boy up there" while feeling extremely proud^^

Giggles Nick Fury as Steve's dad- someone needs to do Steve kidfic with that scenario like now ^_~

I have nearly 20 prompts left...can´t you force panda?
(Well, I´m sure you can force panda, the question is will you do it?)

[identity profile] axolotl-lan.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I could try and encourage her but she has a deadline for her notes for our fic from her vacation... if I finish up my battlefics maybe I'd try it... very maybe as I already have a kidfic and broken comp...

Well, it´s a golden opportunity for you, free to request anything.
To be honest, I wouldn´t know what to request either (the endless possibilities^^)
