Question

Hi, everyone.

I'm one of those clueless newbies who's getting into the comics after seeing the movie, and I've been reading tons of Iron Man and Avengers back issues trying to untangle all that canon. But there's one really basic thing I haven't managed to discover yet: when and did the original Avengers (and Steve in particular) discover that Tony Stark is Iron Man? I've been digging through the digital archives on Marvel's site trying to find out, but no luck so far. :-(

ETA: Woo-hoo, thanks everyone! When I asked my question, I had no idea it was going to come with a bonus doze of nearly naked Tony! Gotta love that cracky Marvel canon.

Hi there! I'm brand new (brought in by the movie) as well, and I've been doing the exact same thing all summer. It's unfortunate that Marvel's archives are lacking in Iron Man vol. 1 ( I mean, there were over 300 issues, but they have, at most, 30-40 up. Mind you, they've got some important ones, like Demon in a Bottle and Armor Wars, but still :/ ) So I'm not sure when they find out myself. From what I can tell, at the very least Cap knows by IM #124 (beginning of the second drinking arc).

I'm trying to hunt down scans for you (they're buried somewhere in scans_daily, I'm sure of it), and I don't know the issue number off the top of my head, but it involves a red thong and is worth seeing just for that. *Snort*

The Avengers learn Tony's identity in Avengers v1 #215. A supervillain with the power to control molucules disintegrates Iron Man's armor, revealing a nearly-naked Tony Stark, who is wearing what appears to be a red thong (http://pics.livejournal.com/crimsonquills/pic/00047253).

Long after. And, as sdroid points out above, Steve clearly suspects as early as Iron Man #124.

My theory is that his shock at "discovering" that Tony is Iron Man in Avengers #216 is actually stunned amazement over the thong.

Steve: *thinks* ZOMG. Naked Iron Man. Naked Tony. Naked Tony is Iron Man. All of my secret porn fantasies have come true at once!
*says* "Wait a minute! Where's Thor? And... Tony Stark... you're-"
Tony: "Iron Man. Right Cap!"
