... and I'm looking for suggestions, encouragement, screams of horror, whatever.

You know how much Marvel loves What-ifs. What I would really like to do is make this a comic, but I can't draw, so I'm thinking an epic-type fic that answers the question 'What If Captain American and Iron Man were a couple'.

Only trouble is, that's about as far as my inspiration goes. I mean, I'm pretty sure I want to go into the poitical and power-game ramifications of the whole thing, but I'm not sure what actually happens in the plot and what kind of an ending this scenario would really have.

I do have a tagline, though:

'If Tony Stark's gay, that's just a juicy piece of gossip. If Captain America's gay, it's a national emergency.'

The newspapers scream. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert on the Daily Show. CNN goes into meltdown. Then Skrulls/Ultron/Glacticus/similar arrive, or there is some big political hoo-haa, and this is temporarily forgotten. Redneck hicks and San Fran and NY peeps give their views. People with placards outside Stark Tower/Avengers Mansion.

The firestorm of controversy leads them both to fear the other will beak things off in a mutual Big Misunderstanding, but of course, it ends with them affirming their love and living happily ever after.

What point in canon are they getting together at? Because if it's very early, then some of the worst points in Tony's canon (like the serious drinking) might not happen. Also, the Kathy Dare shooting. And Tony wouldn't have spent all that time with the West Coast Avengers, either -- the main team would always have had the two of them together on it, unless they have a major fight at some point.

Cap would be out a couple of canon het relationships, too (Bernie, Sharon, and Diamondback), but since none of them actively tried to kill him, there'd probably be less overall impact on canon storylines.

Do you have a timeline set for this fic? Is it going to be after Civil War and all of that or sometime earlier?

Actually, the ramifications of them being a known couple before/during Civil War would be interesting. It would also be nice to get away from all that and just have it set earlier though.

I'm gonna start writing this but what I will need at some point is help with the comics canon and stuff like 'The Today Show', both because - I shoulda mentioned - I'm English, and according to my New Avengers comics, Civil War is 'Coming Soon', so yeah.

I was thinking though, set it about where the British editions of comics have got to - we're in the middle of The Collective storyline, so the Avengers are only just back together, the Young Avengers are around, Tony is clean and Civil War hasn't happened yet.

Probably the earlier events with Tony's drinking and such happened pretty much the same as they did in the books, but their actions at the time are retconned to have had something to do with the affection that dares not speak its name.

And probably Wiccan or Hulkling goes on Bill O' Reilly. And homophobes are scarred for life. If the reaction from America is bad enough, it might lead to another freak-out from Cap. And Tony goes on Ellen! Yes!

Also, so tempted to try to draw a cover. It'll be shit, but still. Red, white and blue... and orange, yellow, pink and green. ^-^
