Fic: Intimacy - G

Consider this an emotional bandaid for my last fic.

Title: Intimacy
Timeline: Still somewhere in the middle of it all before crap happened and people died.
Summary: It’s the little moments that make life perfect.
Rating: G
Author’s Note: Not because I think you don't know, but because I feel that the exact definition of a word can sometimes be important. Intimacy - a close, familiar, and usually affectionate personal relationship; a detailed knowledge or deep understanding of a person, place, subject, or period of history.
Disclaimer: Marvel apparently owns everything. I just write about it.
C&C: Always Appreciated
Archive: Sure!

Intimacy

Steve knew that Tony was always up at 5:15 to put the first pot of coffee on in the morning. Tony would mechanically rinse the carafe three times before setting it in place and pushing the red start button. He would then go climb back into bed, not emerging again until Steve had returned from his morning run.

Tony knew that Steve always washed his own dishes. He also knew that Steve would hum softly to himself while doing it. The sound was barely audible over the running faucet. He was pretty sure that Steve wasn’t aware he was doing it, but it was one of the main reasons that Tony took time every morning to sit at the breakfast table instead of heading straight to his office or the lab.

Steve knew that Tony had yet to manage to stay awake during movie night. Any teasing inquiries made as to his state of consciousness would be vehemently dismissed, so Steve simply waited for that breathtaking moment when Tony’s head would come to rest on his shoulder.

Tony knew that it took Steve five steps to make it from his side of the bed to the bedroom door in the morning. It only took Steve three steps, however, to make it from the door back to the bed.

Steve knew that if Tony ever got tired enough to fall asleep by himself, he somehow managed to take up the entire bed. He would come in to find Tony on his stomach, face pressed into Steve’s pillow, covers askew. Steve had gotten very good at making the bed around Tony before maneuvering himself half underneath the other man. Tony would curl against him and sigh. It was the most content noise Steve had ever heard.

Tony knew that Steve’s resting heart rate was around sixty beats per minute. He knew that just the sight of Tony in one of Steve’s old T-shirts was enough to raise that rate to seventy beats per minute. Tony would lay up against Steve at night, listening to that steady rhythm count their minutes together.

Steve knew that Tony’s smile, Tony’s real smile, was easy to miss if you weren’t looking for it. The corners of his mouth would turn up softly and the smile would make it all the way to his eyes. Steve saw adoration in those eyes, an unconditional love that scared him. He knew that those feelings had nothing to do with Captain America. They were only for Steve Rogers.

Tony knew that in quiet moments, Steve would glance over at him. He could feel Steve’s gaze like a physical touch, baby blue eyes memorizing his features as if Tony would disappear at any moment. The expression that he saw when he turned to meet that stare had incredible power over him. Steve made him feel worthy, innocent, brilliant. Sometimes, it would catch him just right, make him want to cry. He woke up every morning hoping to live up to those beautiful expectations.

I don't read a lot of fic - I'm terrible at fandom - but your summary was enough for me to give this a try. I'm glad I did, because it actually made me cry a little *laughs*

This is why I love these two so much, everything that goes on behind mask and cowl, the little thoughts and quirks and moments that makes a real human relationship. Absolutely beautiful, and perfectly word for word how I always see Steve and Tony.Thank you, THANK you!

Aww, very sweet! My favorite part is definitely the the second to last paragraph. I love that Steve is nervous about someone adoring him just as Steve, completely separate from the Captain.

I love this. You so captured those little moments in their relationship. Not big, showy moments, but everyday moments where Steve looks at Tony, or Tony looks at Steve, and they really SEE one another. And it makes them fall even more in love.

My favorite part is Tony falling asleep on Steve's shoulder. *cuddles*

Small and lovely and perfect. I love the fact that you concentrate on all the little details that make up their relationship.

*wibbles* So sweet. I love Tony counting heartbeats - it's such a Tony thing to do. You totally succeeded, by the by. Warm and fuzzy, check! ^_^

*happy sigh* This was wonderful. The small, everyday things that a pair of lovers learn and treasure about each other are often my favorites. All these little images were very well drawn, too. :-)

It would! Alas, I am undoubtedly too late to encourage. This is what happens when I let myself get behind on e-mail and LJ comments...

Awwwwwwww. That's amazing and adorable and so sweet. :)

(and I'm going to ignore your silly 'timeline' and pretend this is AU where they lived to be old men :p)

kjgadf these are fantastic and touching. Such awesome little tidbits, I love speculating about these kinds of things with favorite characters, love it even more when someone else comes with them xD

He would come in to find Tony on his stomach, face pressed into Steve’s pillow, covers askew. Steve had gotten very good at making the bed around Tony before maneuvering himself half underneath the other man. Tony would curl against him and sigh. FAVORITE.

*Has melted into a puddle of sappy goo* I love all of these -- I love that it takes Steve two steps fewer to get back to the bed than it does to leave it, and that Tony knows what Steve's resting heart rate is, and Steve making the bed up around Tony without waking him, and the fact that Steve is a little scared by how much Tony loves him, and Tony is awed by the fact that Steve finds him worthy ^_^.
