Disclaimer: Nothing is mine.
Notes: So, I've been sitting on this for a while. I love making fanmixes and do it all the time, without even trying. This has been my favorite playlist on my iPod and I only just got around to gathering them all up and uploading.
Heck, I went straight to making a C&DP when I finished this one (it's all crack).
The drabbles are pretty blah. I only added them to give an idea of the plot I had in my mind. I hope it worked.
The title of this came from a quote about the American flag. It was either that or a line from the flag code, and this one looks better.
There is a typo on the tracklist. Just ignore it.

01| No Emotion {Idlewild}
Can you see ourselves and trying to hide
The reasons that define you
If there's a point in trying to find
If there's an emptiness inside you
Iron Man's voice is cold and unemotional. If you did not know there was a person inside you would never guess. Steve sometimes still had his doubts.
02| There's Always Someone Cooler {Ben Folds}
I know that's hard to believe
But there are people you meet
They're into something that is too big to be
Expressed through their clothes
And they'll put up with all the poses you'll throw
And you won't even know
That they're not sizing you up
They know your mom fucked you up
Or maybe let you watch too much TV
But they'll still look in your eyes
To find the human inside
You know there's always something in there to see
Hank and Janet laugh at something Thor had said. Steve is a few feet behind them, leaning against the wall and smiling. Tony, though, is across the room and glaring at his computer. Every few minutes he would alternated between rubbing his temples and furiously stabbing at the keyboard.
He missed the piercing look Steve sent.

"Tony- Tony!" Steve shook Tony's shoulder. "You have been down here for days. Come upstairs, eat and go to bed. It won't help if you are collapsing on your own desk."
Tony pushed his hand away. He needed to solve this. He would rest when he was done.

I had to close down everything
I had to close down my mind
Too many things caught me
Too much could make me blind
I've seen so much in so many places
So many heartaches, so many faces
So many dirty things
You couldn't even believe
One glass after another. The second shot follows the first, and then comes a third.
Tony can escape from the villains and the destruction. He can hide away from the reporters. He can even lock himself out of sight from the other Avengers.
He cannot escape his own mind.
Not without help.
He takes another drink.

No companion to take him home
His only friends are the kind that just leave him alone
No one knows just how lonely his life has been
In a world that lives in a dream
There were no expectations, no duties. It was great.
Tony was fine. Tony was content.
He didn't need help.
He didn't want it.
06| Fly Again {Jude}

I'm a fallen angel

Again
Steve was a surprise. He had not given up.
Tony held back a sob. That someone could have any faith in him still was amazing.
Steve was amazing.
Tony would try, one more time- for Steve.

Electric blondes in summer feel
Pretty hearts that never die
Captain take me to the sky
Captain win and you and I
Pick a star and we do fly
Love the world and it will know
Captain I don't want to go
Iron Man was just a red blur in the sky getting bigger by the second.
Steve smiled and strapped on his shield.
Tony did not need to be close enough to hear, or even have his communicator on- he knew what Steve yelled, he could feel it in his bones.
"Avengers Assemble!"
It was good to be home.

Tony wasn't good enough. He had too many flaws to count. His eyes widened.
This could not be happening.
Steve brushed his hand along Tony's jaw. If it was any other time, Tony's frozen look would have made him laugh. Instead he leaned down and placed a crooked kiss on Tony's chapped lips.
Tony only unfroze when Steve was pulling away. He didn't deserve this, he was not good enough.
But, he could be selfish. With unexpected speed, Tony dragged Steve back to his mouth for a crushing kiss.
Okay, so it is happening.

The weather is changing and breaking my stride

After being partners for so long, with much of that time spent as being close friends, being lovers was pretty much the same.
Well, Tony thought, except for the sex.

With Extremis, Tony heard about New Avengers as soon as they did something. He didn't want to go after them, he only wanted to talk, to try and fix things.
He knew that couldn't happen.
Instead, he just waited as long as he could before he sent anyone out.
13| We're Both So Sorry {Mirah}
I can't understand why you refuse my one request
Just to press against my weaponry and then lay bare your chest
Challenges like these can be won or lost or laid to rest
Now we both agree to separate from the lonely castle steps
The kingdom is destabilized, the watchtower unmanned
The bedroom lies abandoned and the future is unplanned
When Tony took Captain America in, he did not feel like he had won. It had gotten past 'winning' and 'losing'. He was just bailing out the Titanic.
He didn't know he was being ironic.

Is it endless and empty and you wonder on your own
Slowly forget about the folks you've known?
Do we get to look back down at who we loved?
Are we above?
Are everywhere?

I'm trying not to think about the sad, even though I made it.
"We're Both so Sorry" and "How Glory Goes" made me tear up a bit. I suck with writing angst.
If I could, I would have added a bonus happy track at the end, but I couldn't find a good one.
In my mind, Tony does cry all those tears, and the other pokemon help. Steve is then magically revived and mewtwo discovers love.
And now I want to find a Marvel-rap. Gotta catch em all.
