Sorry for the super late cap_ironman/cap_ironman newsletter, guys! I've been having computer troubles. And unrelated but very frustrating phone troubles. At this rate, I'm going to start training carrier pigeons. Anyway, this will be a very bare-bones newsletter. But feel free to jazz it up in the comment section with recs for your favorite off-site Steve/Tony fanworks, such as fic that has been posted to A03 but has not been posted here. Or feel free to just chat.

Tony leaves the meeting before he’s supposed to—because he is a busy man and he has things to do and anyone who has a problem with that can just shut their mouths, can’t they—without saying goodbye to anyone. He stalks down the hall and into the elevator and out of the lobby and up to the car (where Happy is courteous enough to let him slam his own door) and fumes the whole ride over to Stark Tower. He sketches out schematics for two new models of repulsor boots and a pocket water filtration system on the back of a napkin—he’s nothing outside of the suit, is he, well fine, he’ll show that frosted-over Americana has-been douchebag--and gets out of the car in a whirlwind of irritation and almost-but-not-quite falling on his face.

Four copies of Under the Spandex 2012 had turned up with the mail on the kitchen table, where Tony picked them up. He peeled open the clingy plastic wrap and flipped through one of the calendars. “Huh,” he said, and put it back down again. Then he very calmly and very majestically got on the phone with Pepper.

Four, and he builds a circuit board while no one’s looking, bounces off the walls and hangs from the chandelier, clings to his mother’s leg, steals Obie’s watch. He doesn’t look too hard at his father and his father doesn’t look too hard at him, but everyone knows Tony Stark, Howard’s boy, a terror on two legs and a toy car he built himself. He learns the word prodigy too soon, the way it sits on his tongue, the way it beats out a pattern against the thin-dry lips of every nanny that slips in and out of the mansion and Tony can take care of himself, can’t he, can work the stove and rewire the thermostat before he learns to read.

Tony is six when he builds his first robot. He’s tinkered with other gadgets before, of course, but they were never actually real, never -- he never named them, anyway. Capper (because even at six Tony has a Captain America crush twenty leagues wide) is a cannibalized alarm clock, lamp, and toy car; he has little motorized treads and fetches Tony’s pens when Tony loses them around the room.
