Summary: Death. Darkness. Cold. Steve. Warmth. Light
It was difficult to tell in between which moments Tony Stark finally died. He’d long since lost all feeling to the bitter cold and the suits power supply had cut the internal illumination five minutes ago in order to conserve the oxygen supply.
He didn’t remember building that particular failsafe into the armour; in his hypoxic delirium he chalked it up to one last valiant attempt on shellheads’ behalf to save his sorry ass.
It didn’t work.
At some point (he’d lost the ability to measure time with the loss of his heartbeat) he became consciously aware of the change in the temperature, or rather his perception of it; this was a chill without the blessed benefit of numbness.
Bone deep.
The darkness, too, had changed, spreading out past the confines of his helm and he no longer felt the constricting pressure of a thousand meters of arctic ocean bearing him down.
There was nothing but the endless dark and the cold.
“So this is hell” he spoke the words aloud just to test that he still could, “just me alone with my guilt for the rest of eternity”. He took a few tentative steps in a random direction, “not that different from life really” he continued.
“And isn’t that convenient, I don’t even need some hell spawn to torture me”, he felt a hysterical giggle rise up through his throat, “I am the abomination”.
He continued on mindlessly, stumbling towards nowhere.
“But they’re safe now –
(A sound in the darkness)
“they can start rebuilding and healing – (except Jan, stunning Jan who shaped cloth into beauty)
(A voice)
“without me to screw up –
(He knew that voice)
“they can be happy –
(He loved that voice)
“Ste –
Tony
“No no no, please not him, anything but him. Please I’m begging you , not him, he can’t be here, not here, please –
He ran now, eyes screwed shut against the darkness, falling or flying, anything to keep him away from that voice.
Tony
“No no no no no no no no no no no no no”
He could have run forever or only taken a single step before he ran into a solid figure. His fingers automatically clenched into the cloth of its chest, motor reflex overriding any higher orders to turn and flee.
Tony
The shock of contact, a well-known hand entwining his own, and the spark of warmth it brought was enough to draw his eyes open. He was blinded briefly by a faint glow that resolved itself into a familiar shape, brilliant amongst a dark shroud. Its light wasn’t enough to illuminate a face beyond the slightest shadow of a square jaw and the curve of lips. But he knew that face better than any other.
Tony
“no no you can’t be in hell, not here, you deserve....anywhere but here, please not him, not here – “
Tony
The fingers briefly squeezed his own in a death grip.
Tony
“Tony. I’ve been waiting for you”
And the warmth spread through his body as the darkness slowly lifted.
Comment and criticism more than welcome.

And this was really sweet. Depressing, but sweet. Aww, Steve.

At least marvel cannon has resulted in an upsurge of fics fueled by RAGE.

It's kinda sad how a story with Tony's death is less depressing than whatever Marvel probably has in store for him. By the way, I enjoyed the story, it was sad, then happy. And it was quite cute. I always love a happy ending, even if it does take Tony's death for it to be possible...
Also, I like that Tony automatically thought he was in hell, and when he sees Steve, it just doesn't occur to the poor guy that maybe he's not in hell. Total Tony Stark thinking.

It seems SI 8 has flushed us all out of hiding.
This plot bunny was actually the result of an attempted artwork that failed spectacularly and i had to exercise it via writing instead.
I'm glad you think Tony was OC (I was worried about that)

I liked your fic though - very well put together.
