Mod Love!

Hello Cap_Ironman!

This is such an exciting time! We've seen a lot of new faces around here lately and our membership is almost to 400 people! :D

It seems like the perfect time to announce that Pandax_Pro is a new mod for Cap_Ironman! So that basically means that if anyone has ANY questions or concerns at ANY time, please feel free to PM either Pandax_Pro, PandaNoAi, or Axolotl_Lan.

We figure going into the new year, we should try to organize things so people can find things better around the comm. We're already in the process of tagging entries that people forgot to tag, and memming things so people can find entries that way as well!

We would like to know suggestions from you all! What additional tags would you find helpful? Beta List, New Challenges (like the Fairy Tale Challenge, or the upcoming Winter Fluff Challenge) Would you like the Memory Section to have GENRE as well? Etc.

We'll be taking suggestions in this post and then voting for the final changes in some polls in a post in about a week or so. :D

We just want to assure you that nothing big is going to change, cuz our comm is laid back and awesome! We just want you all to know that we are here for you guys if you need anything, and want to help make this comm the greatest! So please let us know what's on your minds!

The only thing we ask in return is that you all be EXCELLENT to each other! (oh that, and maybe add ratings to your headers :P)

Much Love People!!!!

We can't wait to see what you all have planned!

Panda and Lan

P.S. We are also working on some *sekrit plans* to inflict upon you later for some extra awesome! All will be revealed in due time. :3
P. P. S. It's nothing bad though! It's all happy goodness here! :D

[identity profile] empty-splendor.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, genre tags would be awesome!

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
:D i think so too! we'll be sure to vote next week, but i think it'd make things a lot easier

[identity profile] sdroid.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'd think it'd be great if people start putting ratings in fic/art titles. I have a habit of memming something to read it later, and to have ratings in the titles would be great for me to find something I'm in the mood for (ie, G rated stuff is usually fluff).

Memming by genre would be hardcore if you're all up to it. Defiantly tags/memories for challenges and the beta list.

Oh yeah, and congrats again :D

ditto rating

[identity profile] hohaiyee.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
...and tags...sometimes I want to read rating G most time I'm looking for NC-17

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
thanks! and yeah i agree, so we'll be sure to vote on it all :D

[identity profile] mizuko060.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! XD

Congrats, you two! *glomps* Hail to the new moooooods!
As far as the site goes....I agree that a genre tag would help, as well as a new challenges tag, maybe. ^^

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
::snuggles mizu::

thank you!!!! :D

okay cool! that seems to be the consensus. we'll be sure to vote on it :D

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I predict you guys will be great mods!

I am kind of wondering what happebed to Alanna and Tro, though. I haven't seen either of them around in ages.

[identity profile] axolotl-lan.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure from last time I spoke to Tro RL hit for both...

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, Lan asked for us to be Mods a WHILE ago, so we haven't heard from Tro or Alena in forever, and Tro must have just found the time to bump us to Mod status.

it was a surprise, and a nice christmas present for us i suppose ^__^;;

ALSO! thank you for the vote of confidence! :D that means a lot <3

Can I ask that you throw in a comment on the posting guidelines requesting that people observe the rules of spelling/grammar/punctuation in their posts? I know it's a basic courtesy thing and we expect it of people without really thinking about it, but a lot of newbies don't understand that it's a respect thing as much as a "please don't make my eyeballs bleed" thing (and if it's important enough to post to a comm, it's important enough to take an extra 2 minutes and proof-read so that the rest of us will know what you *really* mean).

Couple of other thoughts. First is relating to canon research - I've noticed lately that we've been getting a lot of "I'm new to the fandom, reading X/Y/Z or haven't read anything yet, what should I know/what does this piece of canon have to do with that?" Nothing wrong with research, but could we maybe set up either designated posts for asking about canon issues on the various sub-universes (616, Marvel Adventures, etc), or have a sidebar/profile link to something like Elspeth's Ship Manifesto? I think both the comm and the newer fans would benefit from something like that, b/c it would both make the information more visibly available and also keep older comm members from getting frustrated when the same questions get asked again and again.

Related to that, you might want to think about adjusting the comment on OT posts to emphasize that people should take a minute and think about if it'll be interesting to *other people* as well, before posting it to the masses. Also, a note about posting links to locked posts being frowned up (b/c some of the scans groups are members-only, and especially *with* the high level of newbies, who don't know the comics community well enough to belong to some of the scan communities (not to mention the movie-fans who have no interest in doing so). People tend get frustrated and bitchy when something looks really cool and then they can't get to it, and that can lead to a breakdown in civility )

I probably come across as an organization freak with some of the above, but there's an unfortunate element of reality in the need for clear and visible rules. Our comm has boomed in the last 6 months, and handling a 400-person comm is much different than handling a comm of less than 100 - the posting volume can be higher, and everyone no longer knows everyone. While laid back is good, sometimes having clearly outlined rules/policies in place helps to head off trouble before it starts. It also makes addressing problems which arise easier on the mods, b/c policies *are* in place, and everyone is expected to have read them before posting.

Also, I wanted to thank you for stepping in and picking up the slack as an extra mod - especially with the community growing so fast, *not* having a mod has started to become a potentially serious issue. I think a lot of people will be breathing a sigh of relief to have someone in a position where they *can* step in and delete or diffuse if need be.

[identity profile] axolotl-lan.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
First Paragraph: we aren't shifting TOO much immediately and we aren't going to become so hardcorez that people with language differences feel uncomfortable posting but we may touch on this - especially in terms of STRONGLY suggesting betas for some and try to help them in finding those betas more easily.

Second paragraph: WE HAVE A PLAN TRUST US DEAL WITH IT A LITTLE BIT LONGER MY LOVE!~

^_^ is not bad just sekrit and in progress - but we are nice loving mods trust us!

Third Paragraph: this will be dealt with part of it is related to the second and part of it has already begun I spoke with one person already about considering something before posting. If it becomes too frequent we'll gve notice if tht doesn't work we will have to make a more difficult or intrusive method of coping but everyone here is generally great so it shouldn't have to be taken to that level dear, we hope the prescence of us as mods and availible will help a bit... I think the amount of time with "If the mods don't like this they can take it down" sorta caught on a bit - since we are here people can ask us we don't bite... well i do but only tasty sexy-wise.

fourth paragraph: So am I - Panda is more flexible hence we balance beautifully. We understand he comm was designed for our 75 casually active members... we aren't going to effect the core there will be no huge banhammering or deletions but we will press out a tiny bit of order here.

We were very happy that Tro modded up Pandax for us.

Couple of other thoughts. First is relating to canon research - I've noticed lately that we've been getting a lot of "I'm new to the fandom, reading X/Y/Z or haven't read anything yet, what should I know/what does this piece of canon have to do with that?"

Can I just through in my two cents here.
One of my favorite things about this community was newbies could ask things like that without getting the typical olbie "oh good lord" eye roll.

So whatever happens, I hope it doesn't make people feel uncomfortable asking, because honestly, I've learned something I didn't know from the comments in every "did you know" post that's come up recently. I may have known the gist, but there were details. Like I knew when Steve unmasked, but I just learned character context for a series I never read, which was cool and way helpful.

So while I can see the need to cover some FAQ' I hope we don't discourage those "do you know" posts. Because honestly, the canon is *sooo* painfully convoluted, cracktastic, and retconned that it's really hard to go just read the summaries on Marvel.com,Wiki the Shipper manifesto, or anywhere else and *really* understand WTF happened.

So yeah, I just wanted to toss in that I really valued the openness this comm. had to questions.

Nothing wrong with research, but could we maybe set up either designated posts for asking about canon issues

Not sure that would work, unless it was Sticky and annoyingly upfront. Those in my experience tend to get ignored eventually, plus the way LJ is set up, you wouldn't know if the comment count of the designated post increased because of new info or a new response. We could have several posts for each topic I suppose but it's something I see work decently on forums, but not LJ as much, just do to the way comments are handled *shrugs*

Uhhh anyway in final note *PANDA, LAN Directors of C_I**! I IS TRUSTING YOU*

This does relate to our secret plan preeeeeeeeeeeeetty heavily dear -
I only ask patience during the holiday season because we had not expected this to happen so soon.

We are not going to make Cap_Ironman into one of those rigid deadly boring comms... but we are at almost 400 members fleshing out rules that were originally designed for a 75 person sporadically active comm is important.

We don't wanna pull privilege on newbies as they make up the majority here. We DO want to better organize how they ask, and let them be aware of the resources avalible including us as mods if they are uncertain about a post.

[identity profile] ani-bester.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
We DO want to better organize how they ask, and let them be aware of the resources avalible including us as mods if they are uncertain about a post.

Oh yeah makes sense, I actually had a bit in their about understanding the need for something so that there are not 700 posts asking "Is Steve still dead" but somehow editing the comment lost that . . . this is the danger of posting after midnight I think *LOL*

I just wanted to express my love for the niceness with which questions are received here since that really is one of the things I loved, especially coming out of the HP fandom where that tends to not go so well ^^;;

75 person sporadically active comm is important.

WOW! I that how small this started out 0.o
WOW! Go cap_ironman! It's the little ship that could *LOL*

et them be aware of the resources avalible
RESOURCES!!! *glee*

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
it was actually a lot smaller then 75 at first. i remember our 69 members celebration and it was a BIG DEAL! (plus ya know... the number 69 ^.^)

but we were itty bitty! i think a lot of it had to do with Crims' slashy moments list, and of course anything that Elspeth and Seanchai write!

and now we're seeing so much AWESOME from everyone! it makes my heart happy (being such an old-timey steve/tony shipper :P)

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
we don't want anyone to not feel comfortable posting anything they need! we just hope to add resources that people can use :D

and we would just add links to the side, not annoying sticky posts-- i agree they just don't look good. :P

and right, like Lan said, the SPECIFIC questions post are part of our sekrit plan :3

ALSO-- D: D: D: *dies in pain from joke and is ded* ::hugs ghost!steve and *spoiler!ghost other person::

re: canon research specific post

[identity profile] hohaiyee.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
How about a tag for it? Since the tags are seen on the side. ...and or a link in the profile page.

I actually like the post about Steve unmasking, because from what I heard, he unmasked...wasn't working for him, and he somehow went back? Then there is the mess with Peter Parker.

What I oppose to, is when someone actually confess that they have absolutely no knowledge of canon, but could someone please tell me the whole story so I could write one?

[identity profile] onewayfreak.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
RE:Canon research, the thing that always goes wrong with having set posts for certain stuff is that people eventually stop checking the posts, and questions go unanswered. It works on a message board, when replying to a thread bumps it, or where you can sticky a thread to the front page, but on LJ, where backdating isn't even an option for communities, the system doesn't really fit. I say linking to a bunch of canon resources in the userinfo is a great idea, but trying to stick all research question posts into one place is probably not going to help anyone.

ditto the canon request post

[identity profile] hohaiyee.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, it's annoying. I'm a n00b too, and I delight in actually tracking down the comics and/or googling it (http://justfuckinggoogleit.com/).

I do ask questions in the comments, when I want in on an injoke, but that's the comments!

The flood of canon request post annoys me, cause
a) It is of no benefit to the majority of the community. A fic request/find post will at least turn up a fic, a canon request post turns up things that one can find through wikipedia.
b) Someone who is going to actually write a fic when they knew very little about canon*, is probably going to turn up a very BAD FIC, probably full of stereotypes like female character bashing, cardboard yaoi routine, and is general, a fic that wouldn't be recognizably Steve/Tony if one were to replace the names with Heero or Duo, Angel or Spike, or any popular pairing out there who attracted too much bad writing.

1. Sharon stormed in, shrieking, "I can't believe you are with that alcoholic dictator! Tony recoiled. Steve was very angry, "get out now!".
After Sharon stormed out, tears was streaming down Tony's face. Steve gently brushed Tony's tears away, "Don't believe a word of what she says, you are the most special person in the world", and made love to him, the end.

2. Relena stormed in, shrieking, "I can't believe you are with that no name orphan! Duo recoiled. Heero was very angry, "get out now!".
After Relena stormed out, tears was streaming down Duo's face. Heero gently brushed Duo's tears away, "Don't believe a word of what she says, you are the most special person in the world", and made love to him, the end.

3. Buffy stormed in, shrieking, "I can't believe you are with that souless-souling-stalker-rapist-creep! Spike recoiled. Angel was very angry, "get out now!".
After Buffy stormed out, tears was streaming down Spike's face. Angel gently brushed Spike's tears away, "Don't believe a word of what she says, you are the most special person in the world", and made love to him, the end.

*This is why the only thing I wrote so far is an AU (most of what I read so far is Marvel Adventures...less than half (I had no clue that Giant Girl was actually The Wasp even though they had the same name...) where it's not going to be fully the character, but half Steve and Tony, half the setting of the fairytale world...and I'm cheating by not using dialogue.

Clean up?

[identity profile] celes-ia.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm newish here (I've been hanging around and reading for months, but I'm a natural lurker). So when in the begining when I went through the community reading all of the posts, I noticed that there are 8 posts in January 2002. I know these posts can't belong there (one of them is the What If:Fallen Son cover that was posted back when no one knew exactly what it was) and I was wondering if those posts' times could be fixed? (I seriously spent like 20 minutes trying to figure out what was going on with them)

Re: Clean up?

[identity profile] axolotl-lan.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
We'll do what we can as we move through. If we can manage that we will though we'll prolly be moving in order to see how things are posted and why before shifting them too much.

[identity profile] mask-of-glamour.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Panda and Lan ftw. I trust the both of you to handle things beautifully. You've already been a dependable and helpful presence around the comm, so the two of you being promoted to mods is encouraging. I have no complaints or suggestions that you haven't already addressed, so I'm just here to give mad props to my favorite mods ever, Kung Fu Panda and Iron Lan!! *throws confetti at you both* ^_____________^

Oh, it's good to have active mods again, and you two will be awesome at it!

I've actually been planning to put together a sort of 'reference-section' for talesofsuspense.net (talesofsuspense.net); I know [livejournal.com profile] elspethdixon is planning to post her Ship Manifesto there, and I was thinking of asking if people would mind if I also put up the slashy moments list, to make it easier to find. Meta could be linked there, and the character biographies could be expanded upon.

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
why thank you! we'll try our best! :D

and that sounds fabulous. we were wondering if we could post a link to the Ship Manifesto here too!

I would think to just ask Crims about the slashy moments list. I know she's been thinking about reposting it and expanding it sooner or later.

And the rest sounds like a wonderful resource for new(er) members! We'll be sure to link to that too when you get a chance to put it all together. and then if anyone has really specific questions-- well, that's what our sekrit project is for :D

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
just a quick question!

do you think that the archive suggestion in what we suggest that people put pre-cut in their posts (i.e. title, author, rating, archive, etc.) is out of date? like should we get rid of it? because I know that ToS is more of a "do it yourself" type of place now, instead of you taking people's work and archiving it for them.

I was just wondering what your thoughts were on the matter :D

[identity profile] ellyr-in-ink.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
¬_¬ Ratings in the title? But I like horrifying people into a coma! You think you're going to get fluff, and then... SENTIENT ARMOR'd! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA*coughsplutter* Ahem.

Nah, I think that most of that stuff sounds good and order-y like. :D

I know that Tony shares Peter Parker's luck, so I KNOW what will happen the moment the armor is on scene.

...and because it's canon. I swear that shadowed outline panel where the armor was ripping off Tony's armor and clothes, is like, the censored standard for a rape scene. I think I came across several like that while reading manga. What was the writer thinking? Is there something Joe Quesada would not like to tell us? Cause I just found out about the Chris Claremont and fisting thing...featuring someone dressed up like Storm (http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=Chris+Claremont+%22fisting%22+Storm&btnG=Search&meta=). Freud was right!

First off, congrats on the success of the comm and your new modship. ;)

Links to resources are an excellent idea. Also, if you want to stress certain things about headers or other comm stuff, the Profile Page works well, with what you'd like to see in headers (word count is always important to me so that I'll know if I have time to read it right away or save it for later) and tags. Some comms use links on the Profile Page to posts so that you don't have an extremely long Profile Page. :) I've done some of this stuff on [livejournal.com profile] wonderwomanlove and it seems to work all right.

I like the laidback approach, too, which I try to do at my comm, but started out with some specific rules that helped organize things (the tags) and what was allowed and what wasn't.

And yes, newbies should feel free to ask things, because even though I've read Marvel for years, I'm not as up on current canon and canon is so confusing it's natural to be confused. Sometimes you just have to put up with that 25th question about canon. :)

I've been very impressed by the explosion of members on this comm and fic/art! Very cool! :)

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
thank you so much for the wonderful suggestions!! :D

and yes we're very excited at the membership :D and the laid back feel to the comm!

we'll have a vote on everything next week to make sure everyone wants certain things to happen and we'll be sure to add your suggestions in the mix :D

I'm a steady lurker, but I thought I'd put my two cents in--it'd be lovely if all the posts were actually tagged. I know you said something about that, but I'd like to reinforce it. Some days I want to skip all the "OMG Marvel did WHUT" and "When did the New Avengers happen again?" posts and read fanfic.

All in all, I agree with the lax-with-order ideas above and wish you luck as new mods.

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
thank you for the pennies! i'm glad you commented :D

and we'll be posting something that lets everyone know of the shiny new tags they can use and that they SHOULD USE THEM by january :D

and then lan and i are also trying to tag items as we find free time ourselves

please feel free to comment anytime you think of anything else or have any concerns <3
