elspethdixonto make up for writing a Steve/Tony Fic that she can't read. Hope you like this.
With Bruce everything was a battle.
From the conversations over pizza in the lab, where they argued about everything from the role of the superhero to the correct use of Radiation, to the bedroom, where Sex would leave both bruised and marked.
There was a cold silent Fury within Bruce that when Tony caught a glimpse of it, whether during an argument, or more commonly when he lay underneath Bruce, feeling him ploughing into him, frightened him.
Even getting into the bed had been a battle, and as for anything more coming of it, Bruce had made it quite clear that it wasn’t an option. After the tragedy when he was eight, he appeared to push everyone away from him, convinced that if they got close they would hurt him.
With Steve, things were...different.
They could literally stay up all night, something he had previously thought was just a bad cliché, talking about anything, whether it was team training schedules, War (any of them), or simply nothing.
Steve had lost people too, but their loss seemed to make him more eager to be with people, to let them in rather than keep them at arm’s length.
Bruce was dark in every sense of the word, but there was no darkness in Steve. There was sorrow and anger, of course, at the capture and torture of the young man who had been his partner, but it was more a determination to prevent it from ever happening again, unlike the demons that drove Bruce.
Getting in to the bed had been a battle, but for different reasons.
They had actually dated, Steve making it clear that he wanted this to be more than a one night stand. It had been...nice, even if he’d had to fight the desire to jump Steve in the corridor, having been left at the bedroom door with a chaste (or not so chaste) goodnight kiss.
And even if their first time had been spoilt by Dummy drenching them both with fire extinguisher foam when they were half way through, it had still been special.
It had being even nicer, just to lie there in the workshop, his head resting gently on Steve’s chest. He’d never thought he’d get a chance to do that, the nearest been when he had been carried, virtually unconscious by Steve out of the burning building. Steve thought he didn’t remember anything of that, as they never talked about it, but he remembered every detail of that ride, even, and possibly especially, how safe he had felt. How despite everything burning and falling around him, despite knowing that Firebrand was out there looking for him, despite the fact that they were on a rickety ladder that didn’t look like it could support either of them, He felt complete safe, a feeling that had continued until Steve had gently laid him down.
He always felt safe when he was with Steve.
Which was why, as he lay on top of him now, listening to the soft thud thud of Steve’s heart and breathing in his scent, he prayed there was someone out there who could do that for Bruce. Because he knew that been as scared and as alone as Bruce was, as Tony had been, would simply kill you from the inside out.

Oooh, I love the comparison of Bruce to Steve, that Bruce has all this darkness and pain inside him and is afraid to let himself love anyone, while Steve is the exact opposite (and makes Tony feel safe *goes melty*). This is why Steve/Tony is love and Tony/Bruce is the pairing of warped trainwreck hotness.
And even if their first time had been spoilt by Dummy drenching them both with fire extinguisher foam when they were half way through, it had still been special.
*glee* I can picture that so clearly - Steve and Tony just lying there, covered in foam, while the robot stands there gleefully, so proud to be helping. Tony probably had to talk Steve out of smashing it.
he prayed there was someone out there who could do that for Bruce
*grins* My first throught was, of course, "Like Superman?"

They certainly are another canon hinted couple. Really pleased you liked it.
