Notes This little ficlet came to me when my co-workers went to go take the flags down outside our building.
Post Civil War. Depressing Canon applies. That's why there's just Tony.

Tony drained the last of the water from his tumbler. Concentrating on the familiar weight of the glass in hand, he let himself sink down against the back of hardwood chair. He slouched that way for a moment, focusing on nothing in particular, until the clinking of ice against crystal drew his attention back to the glass.

Silently he held the glass up and watched the light shimmer off the ice as it quivered inside the crystal.

His gaze slipped past the damned ice, focused on the window, and then took in the outside landscape. Five flagpoles lined the walkway of his building. Today, their flags hung limply in the breezeless dusk. The symbols seemed to melt into a blur of meaningless color, obscuring what they stood for.

All, except one pole. The center pole, the tallest of them all, had no flag to hang limp against its metal support. It was barren. Pointless. Tony watched as the dying sun cast a red glare against the lonely metal rod, as if trying to add at least one of the missing colors the dull grey rod.

It had been Pepper who'd finally worked up the courage to suggest that more than four months was long enough to fly a flag half mast.

So, Tony had it removed completely.
He hated that damn flag.

-End

ETA: I can't view the comm. proper at work. I'm 98% sure the coding is okay, but if something is off, give me a heads up and I'll fix it asap!

... very well done. And I can easily see Pepper being the only one with the courage to say something.

TAT

Short, poignant, and good.

Ouch, painful. This was fantastic, with sentences that packed a lot of meaning and emotion.

Too bad the word 'flagpole' has been corrupted for me.
