Cap_Iron Newsletter #1

Hey Fandom!

Just in case you all get busy during the week or want a nice rundown of things so you don’t have to go hunting around the comm, here is the first edition of the Cap_Iron Fandom Newsletter. We’ll be posting it every Sunday. Let us know if we messed up on anything.

Also Member tags have been added. If you want to go through and add Member tags to your favorite author or artist (or combination of the two), feel free. Also feel free to add your own Member tag to your own entries, either from the past or from now on. That way if someone really likes your work it’s easier for them to find you quickly by just clicking on your tag. (Ex. x: your_lj_name)

Oh, and Lan wants to remind everyone of the maybe kinda sorta probably prizes for the Spring Challenge :D So have fun working on your 200 word drabbles! And awesomely awkward fanvids!<3

Well, yes, but they also link things I prefer to avoid going near, so getting a list of comm-specific links would be awesome (I have this terrible inability to avoid clicking on links I *know* will upset me once I've seen them, and I've found that just staying away from places that I know will include such links makes me and everyone else much happier. If I were truly strong, I'd be able to extend this to metafandom and avoid going places where stuff like various pro authors' utter racist fail is linked, but alas my addiction to metafandom is even stronger than the lure of porn).

[identity profile] jynx.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hunh. Interesting. *yeah, brain has yet to come back online. metafandom wuh?* I just liked comicstore because it lets me find some DC fic, mostly because I got no idea where to look for some stuff. Now I have stuff and I is happy~ But comm specific is good too. But yeah, if it keeps you from clicking on tehBad, then I understand your feelings on that

brain has yet to come back online. metafandom wuh?*

Comm and set of delicious links that collect pan-fandom meta. There tends to be a lot of rage-inducing things there alongside all the interesting things. The most recent round of rage-inducing involved a bunch of people from the pro SF writing/publishing world arguing with SF fans about representations of race in sci-fi/fantasy. Terms like "orcs" and "nithings" were tossed around in regards to black/latina/Asian/Indian fans who were complaining too loudly (and then a fan who had posted several anti-racism essays was outed).

Actually, that was the most-recent-but-one. The most recent rage-inducing links were the ones yesterday about amazon.com categorizing all GBLT-themed books as explicit/adult material (including academic texts and YA books) and stripping their sales rankings away.

[identity profile] jynx.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhhh. Yeah, that exploded over a lot of ya authors on my list. Srsly, wtf Amazon. But yeah, I get that. Heh, I used Racefail in a paper, actually. Amused the hell out of my prof. That I referenced it, not the actually thing. Yeah, shutting up until I have caffeine in my system.

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The sheer amount of fail in Racefail really blew me away. I guess I expected professional writers to handle that kind of arguement/debate/fight better than fans do. I'm not sure why, given that published authors have displayed some truly impressive wanky behavior in the past *cough*AnneRiceandRobinHobb*cough*

[identity profile] jynx.livejournal.com 2009-04-13 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Meanwhile there are some truly awesome writers (Gaiman, Tamora Pierce) who start squawking the moment this type of stuff start happening. I've never read Hobb and I'm starting to think this is a good thing. But yeah, pro writers are just so high on their own damned self-importance it gets drainingv after a while. I can only go to the trade cons for so long before I to snarl at them to get over themselves.
