I'm not sure. If they follow the original 616 storyline, she's not actually a love interest for Tony -- she's a sexy spy who takes advantage of Tony's innate weakness for hot people to get a tour of his factory and spy on his tech (there's some stuff with the first and second Crimson Dynamo involved, too), and one of the bad guys.

I suspect they're going to play up the Tony/Natasha vibes, borrowing from Ultimates, where they actually were long-term lovers, and make her some kind of double agent who ends up on the side of the good guys (compressing her comics origin story where it takes several storylines before she defects). Or make her a SHIELD agent.

Could we remove Tony from the equation and just have Pepper/Natasha? Possibly where Natasha breaks into the SI office to steal data or do someting Mission Impossible-y, only Pepper's there working late, and then there's gratuitous porn?

Tony can be out flying in his armor with Rhodey in the meantime, possibly while the camera lingers lovingly on every detail of the War Machine armor. Or Steve can randomly get defrosted and show up.

I could definitely buy into that storyline, but I have a secret terror that Natasha is going to show up as a SHIELD agent "to protect Tony" or some BS and then proceed to be A Designated Love Interest until they forget about her and get back to blowing things up.

Oh, you know Tony has to be in the equation, even if it's only by finding the security tapes later and putting them into his collection. :D But the porn totally isn't gratuitous. Natasha is distracting her so she can leave an exhausted but cheerful Pepper in Tony's office and then slip off with the Technological Doohickey Of the Week. It's a tried and true technique. She probably didn't count on the fact that Pepper works for Tony, and is too smart to be duped that way. There may be handcuffs involved.

I like Steve randomly being defrosted. They need to get moving on that, chop chop. They haven't even cast him yet!

I am eagerly waiting for hours of delicious, delicious glee at fanboys' expense when they do. Watching presumably straight guys fight over which actor is hot enough and perfect enough and glorious enough to embody Captain America's manly perfection is the best free entertainment imdb's discussion pages have ever provided.

I think it's just that Steve is so iconic. With other characters, you can fudge it. So Tony's a little old, and his eyes are the wrong color. The attitude and acting let RDJ nail him. But with Steve, nothing will do but perfection.

People have flounced from the imdb board over the "who is perfect enough to be Cap" fight. They've declared that they will "leave comics fandom forever!" if a given actor does or doesn't play him. They've trolled other posters by linking to faked news articles that claim that the actor of their choice used to act in gay porn. It's glorious.
