3-D Cap art by Swedish artist Sven Juhlin

Click it to see a bigger version. A creepy Red Skull is also at the site: www.comicsalliance.com/2010/01/06/3d-renderings-of-captain-america-and-red-skull/

dirty mind is dirty while staring at this picture. Someone should repost that scan of the epic Cap statue for comparison. ;)

That is gorgeously detailed. *grins* I think it says something about how far I've descended into comicsbook geekery that my very first thought was "the shield would never have peeling paint like that, because it's not painted."

I love the texture on the costume, though something about his neck isn't quite right. *does not make crack about Liefeld art*

Is the shield not painted? How is the colour applied, then? I recall the inside as being silvery, so I kind of assumed paint or lacquer?

I'm not sure, but in all those panels of Wolverine's adamantium claws clanging harmlessly off Cap's shield that Marvel's so fond of, you never see it get scratched, so the color must be bonded to the metal somehow. And the blank shield he had when he was sulking being "the Captain" was a newly-made one he got from Tony -- if the colors on his "real" shield were regular paint, they'd presumably be removable and he could have just gotten his regular shield stripped down to bare metal.

Hm, well. I'm more inclined to ascribe that to art-fail, really (With the in universe explanation that Cap is so badass he deflects the claws to defend his paint job.)

And surely, he could paint over his shield-colours, or make a cover. So yeah, I'm still inclined towards some kind of tough paint of lacquer. :)

I remember it being a 'baked' on combination of mettallic-based pigments and zinc oxide, but I can't remember where I saw that.
Basically it's all -metal- aside from the leather arm-straps but only the silvery-colored shield shape itself is made of near-indestructible Adamantium/Vibranium alloy. The 'paint' layer is technically metal too, but it's possible to scratch through that.

...And yes, I suspect details about this unique and fascinating metallurgical anomaly WOULD occur to Tony in the shower from time to time... (G)

That seems logical.

Except.

How do the straps attach to the shield? :D Glue?

One day I will write a fic where Tony seduces Steve, marries him and then divorces him and takes the shield. IT WAS ALL HE WAS REALLY AFTER.

Snaps. The leather straps have holes that fit over specially-shaped studs on the underside of the shield.

Hm. If it was designed to be a shield, I suppose it makes sense, but I was under the impression the scientist was just making samples. So it would be odd for it to have fittings.

Yeahhh, there's always been something that didn't quite taste right about that, starting with how damn -smooth- the shield is. Have you ever seen the top hatch of a tank? (supposedly, that was the mold the scientist used) It does NOT look like a convex mirror.
It is entirely possible that the shield could have been coated with a lesser metal after the fact, though. Just because something can't be cut, doesn't mean it can't be -added- to. Maybe the snap-attachments were welded to the inner dip-coat instead of the invulnerable metal of the shield itself? (guessing)

That would make a lot of sense!
