Cap_Ironman Weekly News, Week Ending 5th April 2010

Happy Easter, all who celebrate it! This week someone decided to tell [livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman they loved us, and we are always at home to gratuitous flattery, so thank you very much. :)

Last week we got a Cap and this week we got a Bucky. But rumour has it Emily Blunt has turned down the role of Cap's girlfriend, which is likely to be Peggy Carter, although could still be Golden Girl. (Not that I'm partial to Golden Girl or anything. I'm just putting it out there. Forlornly.) The article says they're also considering Keira Knightley or Alice Eve for the role; something all these women have in common is that they're British, which suggests that Cap's WWII girlfriend will be British. Which does make sense, considering there were a lot more British women than America out in the combat zones of WWII. It also suggests they might drop the close relationship between Sharon and Peggy, which would make Cap seem a little less, uh... well... creepy. What do you think?

Maybe it's Spitfire? She's blonde and British. That would be kind of fun. I like her.

Though if Jac's in it, and there's no female resistance fighters, I might be irritated.

Maybe we could have Natalia too though? Depending on the retcon, she was a teenager during the war, and did fight for the Russians. Not as Steve's gf, though, as that would be creepy.

Knightly would make me \o/

I was just about to suggest Spitfire (though Seanchai's rooting hard for Betsy Ross).

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
It crashed this weekend, but apparently only in firefox and explorer -- seanchai can get it to work in safari. She's been sick and therefore we've kind of let it slide for a couple days, because I know nothing about web coding, but she's working on figuring out wtf's going on with it now.

She thought she'd fixed it last week before she got sick (because it *worked* when she checked it in safari), so thanks for the heads up.

I would just like to say that TSUKI told me to post it or she would badger me forever. Blame her!

Oh and for a Love Interest, I vote Howard Stark :P

HAHAHA. I think we're trying to avoid Steve creepily working his way through entire family trees.

[identity profile] savemoony.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not creepy; it's Tony. They are *~*~*~*DESTINED*~*~* for each other. *rolls eyes*

Actually, I have no way to say this without sounding 'Like a slash fangirl who hates women', but I really don't want a love interest. Period. I'm all for Kick Ass Women as Resistance fighters, nurses, Avengers, etc. But no smooches. I don't want Pearl Harbor. I want Saving Private Ryan.

[identity profile] savemoony.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, No, I agree. But I fear it will be the latter. That's why I'd "rather be safe than sorry" and just skip it all together. Plus as I've pointed out before, Marvel's trying to cram SO MUCH into this movie already -- the origin, Bucky, Gail, the Avengers, Red Skull, Modern Time Bookends -- that I feel like it's going to be the Who's greatest hits album instead of Tommy.

[identity profile] savemoony.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be cool.

If it does turn out to be Knightly, I expect more wackign with things and running about in a badass way than annoying underwater swimming. I do get what you mean though. I don't want the character to be "Girl, First Name: The". I want her to be part of the story. With explosions. Peggy was like that originally.

Noooo!!! Not Kiera Knightly!

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
Besides, she might be tied up with PoTC...4, I think? Or another costume drama. Gah, Knightly, all she does is pout with that crazy underbite. To be fair, Emily Blunt is up and coming, with the trajectory of her career right now, I can see why she'd avoid being in a Superhero movie, I think.

I'm dead pleased with the casting for Bucky. He was in The Covenant</> and the only good thing in that wretched movie.

Really, considering what happens to women in superhero movies - they get the crappiest parts, the worst dialogue, are reduced to boobs and hair, and then are blamed for being the Cause of Fail when a movie isn't great.

Hmm, not in Superhero movies. I mean, all of Burton's Batman movies sucked on their own, without the female leads been called out on, thank you very much. :D

GI JOE: the movie blew chunks *jazzypom cries over time and money that she will NEVER get back* , but no one was slagging off Sienna Miller as far as I'm aware (apart from those people on ONTD who can't stand her for some insane reason).

Also, in Batman Returns, Katie Holmes was weak - like, Which one of these do not belong? weak, true facts.

But Emily Blunt? I think at this time of her acting career life, she'll be on the hunt for Oscar Bait (TM) roles. She can do the love interest to the Superhero roles after the plaudits and critiques, like Natalie Portman (who hasn't been good in anything since Leon but I digress) and her hand in the Thor franchise.

Huh?

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hit Girl was the best part of Kick Ass. Her opening line to the bad guys was worth the price of admission alone (whoa, Kick Ass made it to the US?).

Ackerman couldn't act. Alas. Neither could Alba. I agree with the critics who said that their guidance counsellors should have said, "Have you ever thought about being a nurse?" Daredevil was panned for being a shit movie all around, helped by the fact that Affleck's career was sliding into the doldrums fast at that time (with his over exposure, being involved with that woman - her name escapes me right now) Katie Holmes' role could have been a lot stronger, true - but if she were a better actress, she could have worked with the role that she had (like Maggie Gyn-whatshername).

Re: Huh?

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Ackerman was fine, actually, I genuinely don't see why she got such crap

Because reviewers couldn't see past the gratuitously sleazy costume? Well, that, and Alan Moore didn't give her all that much to work with to begin with, and the movie cut what there was down even further by taking out the smoking and the swearing.

edited to add: Given that they stole Harvey Dent's canon backstory wholesale and gave it to Katie Holmes's character in Batman Begins, I was halfway convinced that we were going to get Maggie Gyllanhall as a female Two-Face in TDK. It would have been much cooler than her getting to be the woman in two men's refrigerators.

Daredevil's somewhat better if you watch the director's cut. Like, mediocre instead of terrible. The theatrical release suffered from really bad editing choices on top of being a shaky film to start with (let's cut out an entire subplot, but leave one lone scene from it stranded by itself in the middle of the film, just to be confusing!).

When you have Michael Clark Duncan and Jennifer Garner in the same movie, Jennifer Garner is going to suffer in comparison, even if she hadn't been miscast (I do not think "kickass ninja assassin who could kill you with her bare hands" when I look at Jennifer Garner's doe eyes, elfin face, and skinny frame). I find that mentally substituting Michelle Rodriguez or Aishwarya Rai improves Daredevil all around.

seanchai's working on it -- there's something that's causing the site not to display in explorer and firefox.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, I kind of adored Kiera in Pirates. I wouldn't mind seeing more of her. *cough* ¬.¬

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-04-05 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you seen her in Domino? I think that she just has an unlucky streak of type-casting for historical roles, but she definitely has some range.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that's Hollywood's fault.

I thought it was awesome for a movie of it's type (I admit to preferring comedies and fluff films). I think the unreliable narrator throws people.

*popping in * Did you see Atonement? She's excellent in that.
