Oh, yeah. Poor Tony... really unfortunately for him, Steve is great friends with Iron Man at that point... just not with him.
That's an interpretation that I hadn't even thought of. lol. Agent 13 (a.k.a. Sharon, I do believe, in later years when she actually gets a name) is lifted straight out of Cap's storyline of the time and doesn't really show up anywhere else. (That I know of. Yet. I'm still playing catchup on The Avengers to get to the end of the Tales of Suspense era so I can actually get on with reading Iron Man and Cap's comics.) At this point, Tony isn't really into the whole self-loathing mode so much as "I'll never be anywhere good enough even to be friends with this guy" (let alone anything else). I think that's almost what made this scene jump out at me when I read it last week.
And yes, very glad for the modern-day depth and characterization, even when it's agonizing to read. :)
