Obscure canon question

So, I've been rereading the Steve portion of the Steve/Tony ship manifesto, trying to get a handle on various Captain America trivia, and one of the things it mentioned was that Steve is a fan of a 1920s radio show called "The Midnight Racer." Unfortunately, that's all I've been able to find.

So, who is the Midnight Racer supposed to be? Masked crime fighter? Swashbuckling adventurer? Wild West cowboy? Heroic race car driver with cute monkey sidekick? Enquiring minds want to know.

And yeah, it's only for one small bit in a much longer fic, but I like to get these niggling details right if I can.

Midnight Racer is mentioned a few times in Vol 3 as a show that both Steve and Nick listened to as kids. In #27 Nick plays one of the episodes, which opens: "Now, the the full moon's silver light, let evildoers cower, lest they feel the wrath of... THE MIDNIGHT RACER! Who, along with his trusted aid, the CHAUFFUER, is sworn to the destruction of the underworld. Together, in an effort to protect all that is right and just, they wage their war against crime with an unrelenting fervour that makes the world a safer place for us all."

Steve mentions that the Chauffeur always doubted that the Midnight Racer would be able to do something.

Here's some pictures.

From when Nick was playing the episode.

From when Connie gave Steve an older poster for the show in #42.

Oh, that's lovely. I'm a huge fan of classic pulp fiction (and radio shows), and suddenly, I can think of nothing but Steve (and Tony) lost in a Midnight Racer Star Trek-ish holonovel. *giggles*

I'm fairly sure that Midnight Racer was basically an amalgam of The Shadow and The Green Hornet. Kind of like The Grey Ghost in the DCAU ...

Now I want to go listen to Bret Morrison's runs on The Shadow again.

*points at muccamukk's scans* What she said. I get the impression that he was kind of like, as jane_says says, the Shadow crossed with the Green Hornet, armed with the Spider's guns.

In my imagination, he totally leaves stylized tire tracks on the faces of criminals he defeats, like the Spider's seal that he'd burn onto dead criminals' foreheads. That, or he leaves a card with a car wheel symbol on it, like the Saint and his little stick figure.
