Cap_Ironman Weekly News, Week Ending 10 July 2011

Welcome to the [livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman/[community profile] cap_ironman newsletter. For those of you who celebrated Cap's birthday, I hope you've all recovered.

Marvel has posted an interview with Captain America co-creator Joe Simon, who talks about his excitement for the movie and his new memoir Joe Simon: My Life in Comics. How-To Geek has a collection of Marvel wallpapers, including a Cap one near the bottom (I think the Storm one is my fav, though). And for our members who are fans of Iron Man: Armored Adventures, here are five stills from the second season, which airs this Wednesday on NickToons.

As always, any discussion - on-topic or off-topic - is welcome in the newsletter comments!

[livejournal.com profile] grand_duc posted a fic called Wedding Woes.

[livejournal.com profile] nightwalker posted a fic called Breaking News.

[livejournal.com profile] fictivore made a pimping post for Iron Man: Armored Adventures.

[livejournal.com profile] bunnyfication posted a series of fancomics called What if New Avengers were a fifties nuclear family?

[livejournal.com profile] derryderrydown posted a fic called A Family Tradition.

[livejournal.com profile] jazzypom posted a Chris Evans Interview with the NYT here on LJ and here on DW.

[livejournal.com profile] taiyou_to_tsuki posted a fanart called The Artist and the Engineer.

[livejournal.com profile] kiarasayre posted a fanmix called maybe I lost my direction.

Finally, if you're a new or recent member, hello and welcome! Our rules are here, and in the profile; this includes our warnings policy, so please read. If you're interested in the ship, you may want to read the Ship Manifesto, and consult the list of Slashy Moments. If you're planning to write for the comm, there are some tips on writing the pairing here, and the Avengers in general here; if you're having trouble finding a beta, or would like to offer your services as a beta, our beta list is here. If you're looking for the comm archive, it's Tales of Suspense, and it's automated - you can create an account and upload your fic. If you're looking for a particular story, why not try [livejournal.com profile] cap_im_finders? If you have any questions, you can comment here or PM a mod, that's me, [livejournal.com profile] muccamukk, or [livejournal.com profile] valtyr.

***Subtle Spoilers for FEAR ITSELF****

Anyone read Fear Itself #4?

I thought I'd be angry about what Fraction has Tony do (oh, Fraction, how I dislike your Tony characterization), but I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. It's actually a really powerful panel.

I just wish it's been a bigger panel. At least a quarter of the page. It was so powerful. I just wanted it to have a larger impact. Steve in his Cap Uniform got a whole page, darn it.

And, cause I don't feel like posting twice, dear whom it may concern: I want more Howard/Steve/Tony fic. The creepier the better. Thanks! :D

I know they had to get a lot of things accomplished in this issue, but I wish there'd been a liiiitle more introspection about Bucky.

Tony was really injured/mentally traumatized in IM #505. I was hoping it might carry over a bit into Fear Itself, but alas. (Did you see the label on the "package" he was carrying?)

Once the movie hits, you're so, so going to get your wish. And after Avengers? I can just imagine the flood of people to this LJ. XD

Seconded so very, very hard.

I also thought it was well done. I'm glad that Fraction killed him off not Brubaker, as I think Fraction has a bit more distance from the character and could do a decent job of it. This way it was a dramatic, major moment that rightly closed and issue, but it didn't drag on and on like a parody of the death of Richard II.

I have been reading more Fraction and have decided that I mostly don't like his Tony, and the rest isn't so bad.

I find it frustrating that as a story teller I don't mind Fraction too much (and actually sort of liked his Tony's angsty inner monologues of 504 and 505 -- the art remains atrocious) but dislike the way he writes the character I enjoy the most. Sometimes I can't even put my finger on it. It's like Fraction has picked up on the qualities that can make Tony an ass sometimes, but without the layers beneath it.

It was incredible, if not frustratingly brief (given the chaos-war-destruction...) I'm actually hoping for some elaboration (at least a mention, dear God please) on what that moment means for Tony's character/future &c once the dust settles a bit. Because they shouldn't let that go.

I fear we'll have to manufacture our own fanon on this one. (At least to get what we want.) We'll see. I just don't want Tony going off the wagon. This time was justified... others won't be. I really do think if he was going to go off the rails, it would have been during Civil War. And like he says in The Confession to Steve's body, if he didn't then, he's not going to after.

[identity profile] mostepotente.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who hasn't read fear itself, but got spoiled by a friend (she started it and I wanted whole hog after that)... all I can say is that I just hope that this is a one time occurrence for Tony... if only to show that 'yes, you can slip, but it does not have to devolve into a huge dramatic crisis every time if you realize you slipped and vow to do better'. If we get another self-destructive arc around this issue it won't make me very happy -- if only because it gives justification to the critics (both fans and characters) that Tony is a miserable screw up and it's not true.

Alternately sweeping it all under the rug afterwards is disingenuous... Tony has an illness that he can't just magic away and there should be consequences, if small for it.

I'd be quite happy with angsting about the fear of backsliding though.
